Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the advice and information, I am so grateful to eachone of you, and how I can learn in areas where things are not to clear to me.

Spending time at the Charity Shops as I do once a week, I stumble across this Hoover Senior. Another prime example of an era where either yourself or a relative or friend had one of these, in South Africa.

As an upright cleaner, with the well known beats, as it sweeps as it cleans, it was a great cleaner, sounding a deep throbbing sound as the carpet [ile was beaten and simultaneously swept. With a top fill paper bag system, if my understanding of the bag system serves me right, it was an easier bag clean or exchange than the previous model, where the bend, extending the filling tube, was absent and y stood the chance of dust and debris, falling back into the suction fan compartment and out on the floor if the machine was not in use. Well in this model it was rectified and made a huge difference, in machines not easily blocking up when neglected.

With a 2 speed motor that sounds absolutely wonderful-420W -600W, It did have it's drawbacks. At 420W this machine competed in the South -African Market with the Electrolux 504 super suction range at a 450W motor, however a total different cup od tea.

420W for hovering of carpets with the roller brush in action. 600W for the tools, activated when sliding in the connector from behind -underneath- the machine, the motor speed increase for a better suction.

Well, it was to wonderful, but yet to terrible for words. Leacking suction power from the coverplate covering the brush roll, the straight suction was really bad, even at 600W. Once the coverplate is covered and sealed the suction is much much better. With models in the same shape, after, the 2 speed motor, was no longer available and the machine run at 450W for both hovering as an upright cleaner as well as a new concept of a connector placed over the cover plate sealing the opening and a hose attached to that for a more sealed, sustainable suction.

I wonder why hoover kept that system from the 652 de luxe at a 385W motor from 1959, and even before that with the 262, and 612, leaking suction? Almost 2 decades. maybe someone knows. Even the junior with a more sealed suction system had a better performance at 250W.

A great machine though.

Many Thanks
Adrian

I think it was because the poor performance of the tools had little impact on the sales of the cleaners. Why change something which works, if not for the consumer then for Hoover?

Interesting that yours has a white handle and fork. UK cleaners were green to match the cleaner, from memory it was their first mono-tone cleaner since the dark brown beasts which ended in the 1950's. Most had some white parts. Even the first 1346 Junior was two shades even if it had no white.

White handle and Fork

Hey mr Vintage repairer-

Looking at postings I see that these cleaners obroad has the pine greenish handle.

In South-Africa all these had white handles, from the word go. The handle and fork on the above machine has signs of scuffs. and the idea is to have it sandblasted and powder Coated in the original White without the character scuffs. we also had an Orange model, beige and brown early 80's with striking stickers on, the red as in Gareth's posting of the U4028, which in my opinion is a very nice machine and quite neatly restored, have not seen it face to face, and a more Army green machine. all with white handles and Forks.

Thanks for the comment, it is very interesting, and quite true people did maybe focus on the upright ability of the cleaner as to the tools. Why change if the sales keeps rolling in. LOL HAHAHAHA. Money makes the world go round.

Adrian

Interestingly, the UK had a dirty-yellow version before this (I think the U4002) and that had white handle & pitch fork. Incidently the cable hooks on yours look like they are metal - is this so?
