I was given this Vorwerk upright today. It's in immaculate condition. There is no bag in it, but I believe the bag looked like a Hoover type C bag with a cardboard stiffener around the open end. Anyone have a spare paper bag?

It's labeled for Advance (a commercial vacuum manufacturer) as Maintenance Marketing Inc. I believe it was sold as a light weight commercial vacuum. It's just a modern copy of a twin-motor Air-Way Sanitary System from the 1930's.

It has a unique edge cleaning brush. Never saw one like this before.

I know VERY little about Vorwerk, and this model. Can anyone fill me in? Would sincerely appreciate it, as I plan on displaying this machine at the Vacuum Cleaner Museum.

Vorwerk

Vorwerk was probably first seen in US as the Bigelow Carpetmaster for the carpet company in the early 60s.The above is at least 80s and was seen here as the Mighty Maid.About 1983 we had a Vorwerk office nearby that was number one in VW sales in the nation. All US offices later closed leaving one location in FLA for supplies and service.
I think I have a very few of the later, different bag and maybe a couple of the early as needed above. The generic bags when available were just generic Hoover C taped to a cardboard cylinder the fit the fill tube.
I do have a few hoses and attachments'in a box somewhere.'

Hi Tom

Here is the origional paperbag for this unit. When you bought them from Voorwerk you would get the little plastic adapter . Does your one have the adaptor

I don't have the adapter. I'm even more impressed with that bag adapter, as it is exactly (almost to a "T") the same as all post 1930 Air-Way uprights used.

Tom I belive Advance eventually copied this unit and made their own rather odd looking one with square edges and a square tube handle

Here is my Vk117 just like yours fitted with the same Et10 head. I have a few of them This one still needing restoration ( new motor bearings , their a bit noisy )

The Vk120 on the left is a rare one here as its fitted with the ET 30 head( these were mostly fitted to 117's It must also be restored and its bag redyed

My Vk 116 with polisher head attachment and a VK 117 with the et 30 head and most of its attachments. The hose has to be the shortest in vacuum history. The idea was you put the small handle on and carried the machine to use its attachments. Apparently been able to vacuum your car was not high on the list of VK117 owners :)

For an expensive machine sold door to door, it seems rather "cheaply" made, and has pathetic suction like an Oreck. Still, not too many around.

They were hugely popular over here in the 70's and 80's They were Kirbys biggest competition at half the weight. I wondered how it would suck with 110v. I have often noticed a huge difference in suction power between my 110 and 220v versions of the same machine. They actually did rather ok in 220v and this improved with the 120 and even more with the 121 and 122 . After that they switched to clean air system with the 130 and the reliability went down the drain. I had never seen so many vorweks in my workshop with burnt out motors. They were super powerful but didn't last long. 135 was not any better. The 140 used a brush less drive motor wich did away with the reliability issues , The bags were now hepa filtered so their is no expensive hepa filter to replace. Down side is the machine has lost its quietness it was renowned for.

They are not my favorite Vacuum either Never been overwhelmed with them Not to sure why But I have a few I got as trade inns. There are many other vacuums I would grab to use over these but as a collector I feel I should have have them.

Was scratching around in my 'were angels fear to tread " section of storage at my shop and found this wall mount caddy for the vk117 complete with all attachments. It was wrapped in plastic so was not to dirty when I got it out

The last time I saw a Vorwerk vacuum system was in the trade in pile of Star Vacuum, outside of Wash DC.Didn't collect vacuums at that time-now I wished I had it.Sort of a German Kirby??

It's actually a German "Air-Way" Twin Motor upright. Nothing at all like a Kirby.

Cool in a weird way!

I remember the fist time I ever saw a Vorwerk in 1973 at a hotel in Houston. I was hovering around our hotel room waiting for the housekeeper to turn it on. I was blown away by how odd the machine looked and sounded. Several years later I managed to get one in the Maintenance Marketing brand. I played with it for a few months intil the bag filled up. When I realized how hard it was to find bags, I started using it as a power nozzle because an 1 1/4 wand fits perfectly in the opening with the bag removed. I was kind of surprised that the company has always had that same shade of emerald green as part of design.

I'm sorry the company never kept momentum in the U.S. I always wanted to get a hold of a Vorwerk canister, or one of their newer uprights. Very forward looking designs!

Here's the more square looking Mighty Maid you mentioned, however its just a newer style Vorwerk machine with their name on it, I had to track down a Vorwerk brush roll for this one, it was minus a brush when I got it.

At the time I saw that Vorwerk-didn't think of the AirWay.Yes it does closely resemble the AirWay more so than a Kirby.Interesting machines-would like to try a Vorwerk and an AirWay.
