Three weeks ago this FM780 vac was brought to me for repair. It operates effectively but cuts out when handle is at 12 o'clock position. I have cleaned most of the parts and located the 2000 annual corporate report of Fantom Tech. I have gathered some feedback from forum members who had experience with Fantom products. The last straw is to find a parts diagram and list, especially showing the way the parts fit together.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sherman, when you say the vacuum cuts out at 12 o'clock position, what do you mean? When you push & pull the vacuum when vacuuming carpets, does it have power going forward but cut off when pulling back? If so, I know what the problem is! I had this EXACT SAME MODEL years ago. There is a mini plug & mini receptacle that connects the base & top half of the vacuum together....what happens is pulling back on the handle causes the top half to separate just enough that it causes the mini plug & receptacle to separate, causing the vacuum's power supply to be interrupted. The way I fixed it was I bypassed the plug & receptacle, hardwiring the wires together.

Hope this helps you with your repair....Rob

Rob Walton's solution is practical but...

I found the male-female connector and sprayed it with CRC cleaner. As I reassemble I'll make certain the connector floats with the handle movement. And I'll make certain the connectors are firmly snapped. I have worked on many vacuums but haven't seen any as sloppy a fit inside as the Fanom. I did a full rebuild of a Kirby G4D earlier today in about four hours including cleaning time. It runs so well now. I pray the same will happen with the Fantom after a night of rest.

Thanks again Rob for coming to the aid of the vacuum.

I had to shift my planned solution for the wiring harness.

The OEM male connectors had rusted beyond what the CRC spray could help. Thanks to having a Radio Shack store in our town they had just the connector kit needed, namely a #23-444 7.2V connector repair kit. I spliced it in and reassembly continues.

A follow up and progress report on reassembly of Fantom FM78

Jan. 19, third week into the repair on a part time approach I have the motor and suction parts assembled into the clamshell (upper and lower halves), agitator reassembled and check fit to the handle canister portion. Plugged in the new connectors it runs like new. Once the upper assembly is fitted I will brush on liquid electrical tape over the Radio Shack connectors to keep them clean.
During assembly I had a brain fit with two pressed metal gadgets that shift the belt off the fixed wheel of the agitator. After many trials I figured it out and fit like it was made for it. Awesome!

Thanks to the forum members who contributed. I hope I can return the kindness.
