So i though i would share this old and dirty vacuum. First of all i wont be cleaning this up as it has burnt out years ago and second of all im not getting a new motor for it. So anyway, ill give a bit of a back story on this. This Electrolux super 1000w "lite" was my grandmas (i think its from the late 80's maybe early 90's im not sure but if anyone could date it i would really appreciate!) then it got passed down to my mum as she was moving house she used it for years and then when it bit the dust (No pun indented!) she replaced it with a dirt devil upright. So it is fairly old. It has been outside for a while so thats why its dirty. i do have a video review. Sorry for some of the blurred pics!

These cleaners went on sale around 1988 and were replaced in the summer of 1990 with exactly the same machines, except that the colours were very different. Whereas these cleaners had been avaliable in pastel blue (standard), white & grey (autoflex), and charcoal (autoflex electronic), all with light grey tools, the new cleaners were all white, but with deep colour accents on trim, wheels, and on/off controls. The tools were dark grey.

Although your model of cleaner started in the late 1980's, it does however have the 'new' Electrolux own-brand floor tool, whereas the earliest models had a generic one identical to that of the Vax 121 and so many other cleaners.

What is most interesting about these machines is that they actually replaced the Slimline range of vacuum cleaners, despite actually being physically larger and having the larger cylinder motor. By 1993 Electrolux were making a much cheaper-quality version known as the Microlite, which had the same size 'upright' motor that had previously been used on the Slimline.

Here is a pic from Argos Autumn/Winter 1989 showing the older style Lite with the original floorhead.

As Benny has said, the Lite originally replaced the Slimline, but the Slimline did continue for a short time, mostly as a very budget catalogue exclusive.

What is interesting in that picture is that the Dolphin 2230 is so much more expensive than the Lite 1820 and yet offered little more for the vast price difference. The extra 200 watts on the motor would have been unnoticable on a motor the size of that, whilst the bag capaticity was similar to the Lite and remarkably small for the size of the machine.

The biggest difference was in the size of the two small tools - the Dolphin had a much better dusting brush and nozzle as they were larger, but even so, the price-wise shopper may have worked out that purchasing the 1820 and some additional tools was much better value!

Dated to the first week in 1990 ;) [so yeah, January]

Looks very nice, you should source a motor and clean it up.

late eighties

This Cleaner is a late eighties model. Over here they were called Electrolux Polka, and were sold in bright colors. This model was a result of a fusion between Zanussi and Electrolux, and was not a good production on this side of Europe. Its damaged their name a lot.

Sorry, but not quite. Zanussi was bought out by Electrolux in 1984. Electrolux is the parent company, not Zanussi and the Zanussi division has never made vacuum cleaners.

Turbo 500, i might be wrong about the time. but i did own a bright yellow polka, by Electrolux, and soon after that an Orange zanussi that was exactly the same, only without cord retractor. I am sure i still have the pics of both machines on my laptop. i will look m up tomorrow ;-))

I don't doubt you, Edgar. I know that the Lite's weren't as quality as what came before, but it wasn't the merge with Zanussi that brought this about. They weren't bad vacuums for the price here though :)
