Hi guys I wonder if you can give me some advice,

I just purchased a hoover senior 652 pink and white and I think its a very early one
the serial number is JS22662

I put an add in my local wight bay and get this three hours later the mobile range saying I see your looking for a pink and white senior. I said yes I cant believe this I only put the add in three hours before hand.

The man does house clearance for a living I asked him do you know if it works he said he would plug it in and see. I think it sounds OK he said.

Without appearing to be too eager I said what time does your clearance shop shut he said 430 so I said OK will pop over some time this after noon.

Turns out this vac was in a loft with get this 20 old lawn mowers and some badly damaged other seniors well past their best junkers.

I looked at it tried to hide my excitement as this appeared to be very early an example. It even has its original vinyl bag. The foot switch seems to be a different colour than some of the later pink ones and the hoover sign is on the cable storage side of the bag I have not seen the hoover sign on the right side of a bag before.

Can anyone help me date this please im thinking 1958 59 can someone tell me about the bag with the sign on the opposite side that's odd, but its a genuine bag. Also the foot switch appears to be original but different shade of red.

My other advice I need, as im use to pre-war Hoovers, what kind of paint should I use to re-spray this vac with,on my vintage stuff mostly aluminium i have used car paint to spray handle bars with. Butt this later classic has a painted body as well.

My question is what kind of paint should I use on this body as its got to be scratch and knock resistant. I was wondering something like a stove enamel or fridge paint but I do not know if this would be right.

I am told that with the heat from the motor and the light bulb this often warped the pink hoods. Should I change the bulb for something less powerful to prevent hood distorion. The hood has no cracks so in good nick Advice is badly needed im not sure how to deal with that.

One thing I noted odd was that the head light lens cover has a darker carbon stain that seems to of been burnt into the plastic light lens, odd any explanation of that would be nice.

The stain is on the left side I cant get it off seems like carbon etched into it or burnt on from the inside. Would that bet heat and a stain from the carbon brushes?,as inside the pink hood is a lot of black sooty material.

It seems to run OK ,and I have left it running to see.

The man wanted £15.00 for it and I knocked him down to £10.00 so I think I have a good deal here.

When I first got it , it was covered in mould all over black mould and stank. The pink was hardly visible from the mould and dust. The bag I left for a couple of hours in the bath tub with a drop of bleach and some surf washing powder. It has a tiny 3 millimetre tear but easy to fix from the inside of the bag. Any advice on how best to deal with this tiny tear would be very helpful!!

Oh one more thing guy's do you think the motor sounds ok just a quick vid of it running.I was wondering when i shut the motor down does it sound dry at all.

Thank you guy's for your time on this,I value the experience of other's who know more than me ;-)

Hi Mark.

I have always used car spray paint as it is durable and won't easily scratch. Hope it comes out great!!!!

Hi gary,
I am so vintage i cant get away from my 1930s machines lol.I am in mixed minds over this machine lol

But then unlike my 30s gear I can at least use this as a daily cleaner but with careful use to go along with my z65.Pluss i can get all the parts any time for a senior too.It seems on E Bay

I might see if i can get an old lady to make me a cloth pink outer bag for the senior and put this plastic bag away in a draw to preserve it.There scarce so I am told.

But there is no way my senior is sitting next to my 800 or 825 or z25 their royalty in my eyes lol works of art!DECO!!!!

Hoovering the carpet you know i cant see the senior cleans any better than my 800 realy, and yet that is so many decades after.

My senior can sit in another room with the electrolux z65 for company. I have only had the senior 48hrs now,I've bleached everything yet I can still smell mould ewwww

Motor noise

Hi Gary,

The motor doesn't sound as smooth as I'd expect. It has a high pitched "scream" to it, instead of a lower, gentle hum. It also seems to slow down to a stop more quickly than mine does. I'm afraid I have no idea what the issue might be, but perhaps that black soot you mentioned having been in the hood is indicative of a problem.

Hopefully somebody else will view your video and enlighten us both on what the problem might be.

Good luck with the restoration. They are a beautiful design and lovely machine to use.

Nick

Well the guy recons that sold it to me from the house clearance this thing has not been used for decades.

I think perhaps i might get the top and lower bearings cleaned and regreased, may be thats it.May the the carbon soot is just decades of carbon dust.I might get some new carbon brushes too at the same time i think,if not it may need new bearings perhaps

I thought very similar to you, mind you thankfully these machines have supplys in plenty on ebay.

Thats a nice looking cosmetic example for sure, there is another thread doing dates of pink hoover deluxe's(seniors)
the dates are as follow's

The Serial Production Numbers are:
JS. 10,001 - January 1959
JS. 37,500 - July 1959
JS. 346,000 Closed January 1962

You will have a serial number underneath starting with js.
Check out the other thread and leave your serial number down.

I think the pink is defo the best looking senior in my opinion so 50s so autmobile car inspired in design of the time

well i found out why i have a stain on my head light lens

markanthony5's profile picture
When i took the hood off, I noticed there is no longer a capacitator there it looks if though it was taken out due to a burn out.

I have a tiny dimple where the hood was near the capacitator must of created some heat to the hood and made a tiny dimple.

It also burnt a mark on the head light lens which im trying to sand out gently from the inside.I guess this does not effect the running of the motor, and is purley to prevent radio and tv crackle interference and nothing else.I know nothing of electrical thing's

My Hoover deluxe 652 pinky has had motor written off!!!

markanthony5's profile picture
Well now my Hoover deluxe has now had its motor written off!!!!

The gentleman who looked at it said that it had been very badly treated by someone not in the know to repair it.

The armature both ends was bent! The suction fan would wont come off the prop shaft and their were copper wires hanging out of the armature touching the sides as it rotated. The bottom fan was also out of line.

He said the best thing to do with it was to remove the motor completely as it was not economical to try and fix it. Some of the wires had a melted jelly like feel to them.

He also thought that it had been sat in rather wet damp conditions for a long time.

So now I am left with a 652 with no workings what so ever just a complete body with on off switch and rose cable.

I don't know what to do now as I am not qualified to know about electrics.

Will a later model senior fit this and just drop in complete.

I love the look of this machine so I don't know if I should sell it for spares or wait for a person to find a donor motor and wire it in for me.Its all rather a sad situation.I am most unhappy :-( as I have always wanted one of these
