Attached is a photo of the nameplate of a Prolux Plus upright cleaner by Electrolux. I thought it was a commercial machine, but the information states "For Household Use Only".

Please explain.

A buddy of mine who used to work for Electrolux Corporation said that the differences between the commercials and domestics is that the former has a smaller warranty, longer cord, and less attachments. He added that unless the cleaner specifies 'Commercial' on its casing it is a domestic grade such as the Prolux Plus/Model 1717C (and others).

Very interesting! So it behooves buyers to check the nameplate of a vacuum cleaner when its grade is implied but not specified.

The Prolux was the commercial machine. That same stamp was put on every upright hood of the era. I have the instruction book here and the first lines of the warranty page state:

What is Covered by this Warranty. This Electrolux Commercial Product Warranty protects the original purchaser for one year from date of purchase against defects in material or workmanship when this product is operated in accordance with the manual instructions provided with this product.

Household or not to Household?

Well, that is quite the machine. Anyway, this machine is probably for use with both commercial and household use. Even though that is says that it is for household use only, I own many commercial vacs that say "Household use only" on the machine. For example, I have a Hoover heavy duty concept 1 and it says household use only.

Thanks for the information. It must be, then, that the Prolux (and Prolux Plus) cleaners were part of the indirect sales line as an Aerus representative in corporate said that the only commercial uprights they've carried (presumably in its direct sales line) have been those that have had 'Commercial' in the name. The first one--according to my records--was the Model U120A/Commercial which premiered around 1994. The first Prolux cleaner, the Model 1400, was introduced in 1987 and has since been retired.

It is difficult to understand why the nameplates of commercial cleaners would read 'For Household Use Only', or is that just a legal requirement in case someone decides to vacuum his/her driveway or lawn then tries to claim that the unit was defective?

I think it's also interesting to note that the terms 'heavy duty' and 'industrial' are so ambiguous in the industry. I have asked several--including Aerus associates--what they mean and have been given different answers; some have even said they weren't sure. While it makes sense that different companies go by various standards one would think that the industry would have parameters as to what the terms generally include.

This chart, from Aerus's website, shows the difference between its household and commercial uprights. Interestingly, the household version is heavier than the commercial one!
