What exactly is the little red back and fourth switch on the top of the older Compact (Eureka made) PNs supposed to do? It says "Power Selector" and has Hi,Norm, and Low pile settings, but when taking off the back cover to change the belt today, i noticed that it really dosent do anything,,at least from the inside of the PN from what i can tell. Am i missing something? I do not notice any difference when using the machine from one setting to another. What am i missing? Why is it there? What does it really do?

Its supposed to be a air vent/suction relief valve to make the PN clean efficiently

In the Shag setting, you are using full suction. Low setting, both holes are open. Think of it like the suction control on a Lux or Rainbow hose handle. Compact didn't have a suction control, so the vent was needed, especially for berber and shag rugs.

Eureka setting

Well, yeah, like the others said, it is a suction relief switch. What it does is lowers the suction by opening these vents on the side of the machine to use on thinner or berber carpets, then if it was set on "Hi", it would be at completely full suction. See if that helps.
