I love this site there are some very knowledgeble people on here that I respect and learn from. There are also people who think they are knowlegable but clearly are not. Haha :-)

I think everyone on this site uses their own experience to form opinions. Most of us have used hundreds of vacuums over the years, so we use that experience to base our opinions and expertise on.

There's only 2 people I can think of who like to make bold statements but don't have any experience to back it up with.

I don't profess to be knowledgeable but I'm learning slowly :-) I learn a lot from members on here but there are a small minority that make no sense to me. Haha

There's no member on here that knows everything about everything (although I think some people like to think they do!). We all learn from eachother. I've been around the online vacuum community for 9 years now and I'm always learning new things. Everyone has something that they're an expert on, so between us, we're the experts.

Yes that's what I like about this site. Learning new things.

This is a far more effective site than a lot of others - Abbysguide springs to mind with a PITA moderator who has so far bullied everyone off the site that hardly anyone goes there now.

I am however very sad that the first group I joined - Hooverland on Yahoo has become overrun with spam and junk.

Vacuumland for me has been a great forum though and continues to be a good learning experience. I agree with Chris here that we all learn from one another and without him and others I wouldn't probably be so clued up as to past and present vacuums.

I love googling old archive threads too though as there is a TON of info out there on this forum done before I joined, which the webmaster has allowed to happen.

I miss the days of Hooverland too, Nar. The thing is, the UK is such a small country that nearly all of us know eachother in person now. Hooverland started to die out after the first big meetup in 2009, people exchanged numbers and Facebook's so it kind of rendered that group, in that format, a little redundant. The forum set up of vacuumland works a lot better than the yahooo group would now.

Very interesting point on people who think they know everything. I think I have spotted maybe a couple, but you get people like this in all walks of life. I think that is something that anyone can easily say about a lot of people, but as mentioned, people form their opinions based on their experiences. I think I am relatively knowledgeable about certain vacuums, predominantly modern ones built within the last 20 years. Vacuums older than myself, I do not have a clue about and don't pretend to, although they are fascinating and it is incredible at how much some people know about them. Same goes with cars.

Leading on from this question, what is it about vacuums that makes us so interested in them ? I have always said that for myself, I am a clean freak, and with vacuuming, it is something which you can see immediate results with. Because the floor is the first thing people see when they walk into a house, keeping it clean and in order is very important to some people.

I've always been attracted to vacuum cleaners. They are living breathing machines haha I'm also interested in how they have evolved over the years and new innovations and designs. :-)

turbo500's profile picture

My mother has been asking that question for the last 25 years and I still can't answer it!

I have no idea what it is that fascinates me about vacuums so much. From being able to walk, I was pushing the vacuum around. From being 3, I could tell you what vacuum and washing machine was in every house on our street.

I spent a lot of years trying to ignore my interest, keep it quiet and make sure people didn't know. Like a dirty little secret. I spent many many years of asking "why?", "am I weird?", "is there something wrong with me?".

But in more recent years, maybe since about 2009 when I got my own place and started interacting with more collectors and going to meets, I've stopped asking the questions. I don't care anymore. I don't have to justify it to anybody and if someone is going to judge me in a negative light for it, then I really don't want someone in my life so superficial. It is what it is. It's the same passion that drives anybody to be interested in, well, anything! Cars, stamps, animals, books, records, photos. Whatever our collections are, why is anybody interested in anything? It's just part of who we are and how we work.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but...why? You're a grown man, you're allowed to be interested in whatever you like, as long as you're not hurting anyone. What are you worried about?

Incidentally, husband very much appreciates the interest and is enjoying how clean our floors are

You don't need me to tell you that there are plenty of other hobbies and interests other people have which actually cause harm and bother to lots of people. I am interested in vacuums and lots of domestic appliances, why because I don't really know, although the pointers I mentioned are as close to a calculated decision I have made.

At least I am not a pusher for illegal substances or selling my body for cash because these are "hobbies and interests" which should genuinely be kept as secrets and things which get found out by other people, especially in authority, when they shouldn't be, I don't know where this conversation is going now.

Point is, vacuum cleaners for us lot are our hobbies. We shouldn't be afraid of that fact!

At least our hobbies are useful! There's always going to be vacuums around, and there's always people who need advice on them which the experienced members on here will be able to point in the right direction!

At least it means we live in nice, clean dust filled environments unlike some messy people around. Just watch one episode of Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners or How Clean is Your House or something like that, and just look how they live.

I watch OCC & the way some people live is disgusting! Not cleaning the kitchen for 10 years, it's a bloody joke & to think that's the environment future adults live in too. Not cleaning, not washing up dirty dishes, not cleaning full stop. It's horrible & I can see why the people with OCD go to these houses & want to douse them in petrol & hope for the best! :)

Not a Leeds United supporter here! Not a footie fan to be honest. By the way, I forgot to say, welcome to the club :)

Regards to Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners, did anyone see the U2332 on there a couple of weeks ago? I hope they didn't chuck it. I too can't believe the state that some people live in. Our house isn't the tidiest, but it's mainly clutter and as I vacuum daily, I hope there is little dirt and dust on the floors!

Some (well, MOST) are superb people in here. WE/they share, learn, teach, trade, sell machines, etc. Some of us are liked, some tolerated, some not liked at all.The point is: if there's a machine out there, an attachment, an ad, a good way to service a vacuum, you'll eventually find it HERE. No one should be jealous of anyone or anyone's collection. It's assinine to even think one would/should be jealous of anyone else.
I've made stellar friends in here. Some will remain true CLOSE friends until the day I leave the planet.
So, roll up your sleeves, put in a new filter bag, anf jump right in here. There's plenty of roon in our sandbox. Remember; trust, respect are key elements in all things, here in VACUUMLAND too. I'm "all HOOVER", as most people know. Not gonna switch, branch out, jump the wall", etc. That annoys some. Again, that's ridiculous. But, I'll never bash anyone's preference/loyalty. I'm not just a vacuum "collector". I'm a collector/supporter of every/anything involved with The HOOVER Company.

I watch OCC and there was a bargains man who done lots of trash finds, had a few vacuums but never vacuumed in 18 months!
And another lady wanted t keep a pan with expired food which was hard to clean off, and kept the same water in her sink for three bloody days, EWW

I agree it's a great site, to find similar minded people. Like one big dysfunctional family, we are bound to have spits and spats, but we're all here for the same reason, and it's great we can be ourselves, and bounce opinions and knowledge off each other.
