Does a Chevron type rollerbrush clean carpets better or is it just hype?

I think that would entirely be a matter of opinion. Physically, it seems rather obvious that a brushroll with chevrons throwing dirt into the suction would clean better, but most modern uprights have helix-style brushroll's with the bristles going around the roller, rather than in chevrons and I know a lot of people are more than happy with those. There's also plenty of vintage uprights, such as the Electrolux 500's and twin turbo's, that had the brushes in a straight line and those cleaned perfectly well.

From my own experience, chevron brush rolls do seem to work slightly - but only slightly - better, if and only if the suction channel is in the center. I switched out the brush roll in a Royal 880 from an older straight-row type to a newer dual-row chevron-style, and it did seem to help. That said, the old roller was worn while the new one wasn't, which may have been all the difference.

Helix-types work well, too, when the suction channel is on the side. But, all in all, I think total agitation and airflow make more difference than the brush channeling the dirt does - this is why, for example, the metal, helical-strip brush rolls in Tacony vacuums work so well, even on the canisters which do have the suction in the center.

Yes I agree total agitation and especially airflow are more important.
