On my Hoover Commercial 918 I have had a problem with belts burning in to after about two minutes of operation. I have checked the bearings in the agitator and the brush roll appears to roll freely and there is no heat at the bearing ends. There is a wire loop bracket that closes over the nozzle in the middle, something like the flat lever that closes over the belt on a model 63. It is curved and protudes beyond the nozzle and has a tendency to pull at the knapp of the carpet when pulling the machine rearward. This is my only exposure to a Hoover Commercial and I don't know if this is how they are all made...with the wire bail. What I am wondering is, could this bail be the culprit? Could it be rubbing against the round belt and slicing it in two? I would appreciate any of your expert opinion as I know that there are a lot of Hoover experts out there.
I hope that all is going well for our members here and their families.

Hi Lilly. On either side of the brushroll where the two ends fit into the latches, I have had occasional trouble with dirt getting in there and the latches do not like to close all the way. In this case two things happen. One, the brushroll does not want to fully seat in place. The belt guard will close, but not properly. With that said, the belt will ride very close to the guard and be cut in a rather short period of time.

Simple solution for me has always been to take the brushroll out once in a while, and blast out the grooves with some type of pressurized air. While I have the brushroll out, I also like to put a few drops of WD40 on the latches to keep them working nice. Put the brushroll back in and make sure you fully close the latches. When you close the belt guard and the brushroll is properly seated, there should be about 3/16"-1/4" clearance between the belt and the guard.

I have 2 model 913's and one model 918. Both of the 913's had this problem with the belt, but the 918 didn't. I had to clean and oil the latches on the 913's, and bend the belt guards back into place. They were dragging on the carpet too. My friend Charlie had already corrected the problem on my 918 before he sold it to me.

Just take your time. You will get it figured out ok. If you need further assistance, need help or pictures, feel free to ask.

Walt
