New addition Kenmore Wide Sweep, Heavy Duty! Man this thing is powerful! Bag washed, new bulbs, and new belt. $25 Craigslist special. It was made in about 1988, per the date stamped on the bag holder. This thing was blocked up to the fan with schmutz! Works great now! The guy also had a Eureka World vac 12 amp soft bagged from the early 90's, but man that thing was loud! Losing closet space here, so I decided to just bring one home! :)

Wow That looks so nice. We never got Kenmore in SA but it does look a little like a Hoover Concept one. The Colour Scheme is pretty awesome.

Can you post more pics, say of its underside and possibly under the hood?

Eric

Thats a great find you've got there. There was a similar Whirlpool model FV4000XM. What dust bag are you using?

L.P.

Underside and data plate.

The hood has to be taken off with screws, so it's kind of an ordeal. If you'll notice the base has a crack in it. I have super glued it to the best of my ability. Until I come across another one to make a perfect machine, then this will have to do!

Gareth, this was Sears's response to the Concept 1. I could've sworn there was a self-propelled version. This is a phenomenal vacuum! Be thankful you got that big pack of Style P bags, they haven't made them in years! Thankfully, KSSRC is known to have a few packs in cold storage....along with other bags you NEVER find (like that pack of bags for my recent Duo-Power upright purchase wink)

I, of course, have one sitting right next to my bed! I bought it for a present to myself last Christmas, and gave it a complete rebuild. It's BEAUTIFUL! I forgot that it smelled like cigarettes when I brought it home! Those bags are always in great shape!

Kenmore Heavy Duty

There were many iterations of this machine. There was also a white, hard bag version. I think the only difference between the heavy duty and that version is it has a three pronged heavy duty cord and plug. I also love the Heavy Duty Twin Fans those were made by Ryobi or Singer.

Self propelled

Also all of the Kenmore vacs of the 80's came in a self-propelled version.

That Heavy Duty version is special to me. My Grandmother had that model except hers had the black handle. I remember growing up I was scared of it because it was so loud but, I loved to push it around and use the tools with it. They were great machines!

I have a Wide Sweep model that's red. I believe it was a base model. I use Oreck HEPA bags in it and, they seem to work just fine. If you don't want to waste your original bags.

oh believe me, I know of the upright! wink

It was indeed built off the same chassis as the Heavy Duty Plus. It was an interesting concept at the time, the cord rewinder was built inside the bag compartment, and the cord came out of the side of the bag!

This is the best picture I could find of one, clearly showing the retractable cord setup.

LOL it's not mine, although I wouldn't mind one showing up at KSSRC! The vacuum belongs to 'Abrokid' on YouTube! laughing

Way to go Eric! That one is from the first gen of the HD Whirlpool Kenmore uprights, with yours made the week of 11/6-11/10 in 1988, great cleaners but ugh the two main achilles heels were bases cracked (I have one where it cracked at the brush roll groove and glued it back in) and the handle release track wore out causing it to not stay fully upright! How's the track on yours?

Track

@Alex Thanks for the feedback! The machine's handle release seems weak, but the machine stands up on it's own.

Super

Sweeper, can I see a full pic of that heavy duty plus please? I've been trying to figure out what kind of vacuum my neighbor has in her garage and I think that's it!
Thanks!

Kenmore concept responses

As mentioned there were several variations. To the best of my knowledge there was the white "hard bag" model mentioned, which I think was most popular, and there was also a red/black heavy duty model of that and a self propelled model that came in dark gray. In addition to the soft bag model I think there was one other hard bag model but I'm not sure. I saw it in an add which I can't find right now.

I am also looking for a brushroll for one of these if anyone has any leads on that.

One of these is on Craigslist in LA right now for $120. In the one photo it looks pretty nice.
