Hi everyone.

I wasn't going to do it, but today I went thrifting and a Miele Plus S251 followed me home. I only paid $15 for it and it is in really nice shape. Is anybody familiar with this machine? I need to do the obvious such as replace filters and get bags for it. Any recommendations as to what to buy? What do you think of Miele power nozzles? The one that came with this machine seems to work fine, but it seems a little whimpy for a machine like this. Any and all opinions are most welcome.

Thanks for your time and have a great week end.

That's what I thought too

Considering they had Dirt Devil bagless vacuums priced considerably higher.

What a great find, Joe! Today was your lucky day to pick up a Miele for only $15 dollars. Is it me though or are those tools with the hose & powerhead mismatched?? A couple of them look like they may belong to a Shark vacuum. The SEB217 pn is whimpy for sure, but you could upgrade to the SEB236 & turn that Miele into a beast on carpets.

I think

Thanks Rob.

I kinda knew that the turbo nozzle and crevice tool belong to a different vacuum, and the thrift store employees just bundled them with it. My gain. I can find a machine they will work with. I've wanted a Miele. Just never thought I'd get one for that price for the great condition it's in.

It was the Davey Twingle

Had no intention of thrifting today. Then this irresistible feeling came over me and next thing I knew I was on the bus heading to the thrift store. When the Twingle hits, don't resist. You will find a treasure.

Hey Rob

jfalberti's profile picture
I just looked up that PN you recommended. It looks like its a direct connect. Mine has an external cord that plugs into the hose. If I bought one of those, would I need to replace my wands and hose too? Is there another non Miele nozzle that is good that will work with what I have? After closer inspection, I found that the previous owner used junk bags in this machine. I found that Bed Bath and Beyond has genuine bags so off to the bus stop go I! :-)

We'll today was an exercise in frustration.

jfalberti's profile picture
I hopped the bus and went to Bed Bath and Beyond to get bags and found out that they don't actually carry the bags. They have to order them. Even though they have a Miele on display, it's a low end model and if you want it,they have to order it too. WTF??? They have lots of Shark and Ninja products readily available. First and last time in that store.

Visalia has almost 200,00 people and only one vacuum shop. They're closed tomorrow, so I'll visit them on Tuesday. Hope they have the bags and filters. If not then I want to ask if anyone here who has a vacuum store has Miele supplies. I'd rather buy from a friend than a random online shop I don't know.

The doctor is in!

jfalberti's profile picture
Went to the vacuum store today and got the proper bags and filters for it. Now, hook up the Electrolux and start cleaning it out. Luckily, my neighborhood shop is an authorized Miele dealer. He asked me if I wanted generic bags and I said no. I always use genuine supplies for my machines when available.

Cleaning the outside of the canister

jfalberti's profile picture
What is the best to use to clean the scuff marks off the canister and polish it? I was going to use glass cleaner, but the manual says not to. What can I use?

Poor Meile-that is what you can get if you use "bojack" bags on the former owners part.Note how the bag intake coller was crushed instead of properly connecting to the hose inlet on the machine. For cleaning off the scuff marks I first start with isopropal alcohol(drug or grocery store)If that doesn't work-try methanol alchohol-hardware or paint store-try in an inconspicous spot first-this is a more powerful cleaner and can cause damage. It is also sold as marine stove fuel.Careful with the Methanol alchohol-it is toxic and highly flammable.

If you want a sure-fire way to remove marks & scuffs from vacuums that won't cause damage, go & buy yourself a can of aerosol hairspray. However, it MUST be the aerosol kind....hairspray sold in pump bottles doesn't work.

No particular brand works better, but in my opinion, I stick to well-known name brands, not dollar store brands you have never heard of before. Have to wonder what the quality & chemicals they used is like in dollar store brands.

Speaking of your local vac guy, don't they use this stuff called Vac & Polish? Or some other name. Have seen advertisements for it before in the VDTA magazine. Maybe you should ask your vac guy to sell you a bottle?

Actually, in response to the "dust bags" used originally in this model, the Miele S200 uses Miele "H" brown PAPER bags which have brown card collars.

There is nothing wrong with using the newer synthetic dust bags from Miele but you might notice a drop in suction power because these synthetic bags were made for higher motor powered vacuums from later ranges.

I love older Miele cylinder/cans like this, but you should be able to get Miele turbo tool/floor heads online easily, even if you might consider buying from abroad and waiting around. Hope the info helps.

Rob:Will try a can of a major brand of hairspray and see how it works. The vac guy uses the Meth alchohol,He doesn't use Vac&Polish.Never heard of it until now-the other former vac guy used the alchohol, too. That would be interesting stuff to try, though.
SeboFan-whenever I have used Filtrete or synthetic type bags in place of paper-I found the vac air movement power is INCREASED over the paper bag.And I can pack them better than a paper bag-those you can fill only third-half full before their airflow goes down and they may even BURST in the bag chamber causing a BIG mess!

Ive never had a paper bag burst in the old Miele cans I had. Mind you I never use them at high suction when they are empty/newly installed.

I found that the FJM Intensive Clean bags were better but the newer HyClean ones used to make my old 1500 watt model suffer.

I have had the paper bags break in Kirbys(G6)Royal Pony, and a Royal 4000 Backpack vacuum.

The only time I've ever had a paper bag burst is in the Vax canister vacs - 1200/1300 watts in a round tub canister style and no let up means bags often tear or burst open with the suction force. I believe the U.S had them under the "Dirt Devil Wizzard" brand name.

You're thinking of the Wash Wizard, Sebo fan! But yes, there is an extremely rare Dirt Devil version. I know of 2 in existence, one of them being a motor-less store demo! surprised
