Simple question, which is the quietest upright? It can be old or new. I work at night in an Hotel and need a quiet upright to clean a plain carpet. I am getting fed up with scrubbing away with a Henry which just does not shift ingrained soil. I would bring my Kirby, but it makes just too much noise. Have an old Hoover 612 but feel, that this is a bit too noisy as well.

Any thoughts anyone?

The new Miele S7 is probably the quietest new upright on the market today. All S7 Mieles have adjustable motor speeds so you can dial it down to the quietest setting needed.

Don't forget lindhaus. They have some pretty quiet uprights, and they perform pretty well too.

I'd vote for the Miele S7 as the quietest but I have some serious misgivings about its durability, in particular the swivel head. So, in lieu of it, I'd recommend any of the Sebo uprights. I don't think they're the world's best deep cleaners, but they're not bad, very durable, and quiet.

If you were in the US I might recommend a Riccar or Simplicity canister instead, but finding one in the UK might be a bit of a challenge, and then there's the voltage issue.

Actually SEBO's BS36 is quieter than both the X1.1 and X4. Its a darling of the standard commercial industry.

Sebo or it's Windsor twins are very quiet uprights. I didn't think the Miele was significantly quieter than the Windor I have and I also share the misgivings about the durability of the swivel. The Sebo/Windsor design is pretty robust. It's designed to be maid-proof. If you poke around eBay there are deals to be found. Be patient. I found a Sensor S12 that was for all intents and purposes brand new for only $236. Don't buy one that has been used commercially, look for one being sold cheap because the original packaging was lost or damaged or it was used as a demo somewhere.

The other consideration with a Sebo or Windsor upright is clearing a jam. Both have a very cool feature for this, a red spring loaded trap door on the bottom plate where you can clean out a jam. You can remove the brush roll from the side through another little door without having to disturb the belt. The brush simply slots into the belt pulley, but the pulley stays in place when you slide the brush roll out. If it's really jammed, you can release a latch, take the whole bag compartment and handle off the base and poke the crevice tool through the hole in the top and out the trap door on the bottom. Sebo/Windsor really thought those vacuums out for commercial use.

But the Miele S7260 upright deep cleans carpeting much better than the Lindhaus Diamante 380 and the Sebo X5. It is also quieter than the X5. And if you want to use the onboard tools, the airflow is much stronger on the Miele S7. The only drawback I could see is that the S7 weighs about 3 lbs more than either the Sebo X5 or the Diamante.

Were it the case the member was looking for a domestic model, then yes the Miele S7 would probably suffice. But it is no way better than SEBO or others who are producing commercial grade quality uprights.

The BS36 is probably the best of the rest and better than even SEBO's own X4/X5 as it has manual height adjustment and a more basic, durable design. The BS36 also uses an optional shake out fabric dust bag for commercial environments and can clean flat to the floor WITH additional bits that you might require later in life to replace: so unlike the Miele S7.

What's more - the BS36 is cheaper to buy second hand as they go on and on.

Vax Eco air. I got one about a week and a half ago. Very quiet machine. It is rated at 82 db which sounds noise but it really is not. I would go as far as to say it out cleans any vacuum I have used and it incredibly powerful, deep cleaner.

Thanks again, I think I will look out for a Sebo, primarily as a commercial I will be ableto acquire spares easily. In the mean time I will take my canister with it's turbo brush. I really hate the carpet, you scrub away at it with the Henry, even on high speed, then as you walk on it more bits appear as if by magic. Horrible!!! Thought I would hit it with somthing that has a brush roll in the hope of raising some of the crap out of it. Philip.

I'm with Devin, Lindhaus makes a very quiet machine..

I'd go with an RX380.

The s7's brush wears out too quick on glued looped carpet, but if you have to do bare floors/runners, the s7 would be a better choice. They have a considerable amount of handle weight though.
