As unaccustomed as I am to (recent) posting on this site, I trust this message is in the correct forum:

Those of you that may be interested in the Jerry Lewis film "Who's minding the store?" (1963) will be happy to see that it is now available on cable movie channels, Amazon prime, etc., and also on DVD. I don’t know why this particular movie was unavailable before, and some that were aware of it knew only of old VHS copies or the one scene on YouTube that was very grainy in appearance with either French or German subtitles. If you click on the YouTube link that is in the archived Vacuumland link below – you will see that now that video is no longer available.

Well, I was surprised to catch it (I think) Wednesday evening on RetroPlex, and "TiVo'ed" it for scrutiny later when I get a chance. It is (in my opinion) a rather bad movie in whole, with a lot of unconnected scenes and often repeated dialogue. It is blatantly a movie made merely to showcase Lewis’s slapstick comedy and seems to me by the obvious placement of advertising of a wide range (those found in department stores) of products that the movie could not have been made without the manufactures of said products “buying” into the production. If you should view the film – you’ll see what I mean.

Among those products that are represented are Browning firearms, Whirlpool laundry equipment, Channel Master Televisions, and the list goes on and on. Those here of course will be interested in the Hoover scene that occurs right before the very strange and unsatisfying ending to the movie. Personally, I am interested only in the “vacuum cleaner scene” but for different reasons.

The movie does have in addition to Lewis, Agnes Moorehead (a favorite to many on this site) – just one year prior to Bewitched and she clearly practices her “Endora” persona, in “Who’s minding the store?” that she will later use on television. I must point out here though, that (to me anyway) she was not all that into this film, and perhaps did it ONLY as a favor to Lewis or even the Hoover Company.

Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian, South Pacific) is another main character and I am usually fond of his roles, but again this film does not allow him to show his better acting skills. He is used in this movie for the destructive effort by Moorehead toward Lewis that later in Bewitched, will be done through spells and Witch-craft.

The film DOES show many, many products available from 1963 and may be a (only) reason for appliance collectors to watch it.

Anyway, thought you might be interested, as it has been mentioned on here at least a couple of times.

My favorite line from the film: "Fifi! My poor, poor Fifi!" (probably paraphrasing, as I haven't seen the film in many years.)

 

It is largely an awful movie, but fun for appliance collectors given all the interior shots in the department store.

You're close, Charles! She said 'my fifi, WHERE is my fifi!?' When she discovers 'fifi' is in the Hoover, she states calling Jerry mad and bops him on the head with her cane! The HOOVER sucks off Mrs.Moorheads hair-piece, too! Fifis owner swears to never shop at Tuttles Department Store again! It wasn't the best movie, but was certainly funny! Especially the famous scene where Jerry taps a symphony out on the secretaries typewriter!!tongue-out

It WAS made to spotlight Jerry Lewis's comedy. Weren't ALL of his movies? The HOOVER stuff was in DIRECT link to Agnes and her connection w/ The HOOVER Company.... that's been documented.It'll never win an Oscar, but, it IS funny. I ONLY care for the HOOVER sequence. I've had mini meets here where we fill a hood w/ snacks, and all sit around the tube watching that film. We had to get Rob Shore (Zippy) up to speed last time he wwas here. We'll have to do "Mommie Dearest" next time.
