Two days ago I ordered an Oreck XL Classic off of eBay for a reasonable thirty dollars with shipping. On the listing, it said that the vacuum was used a few times and then thrown into the garage. The Oreck is in very sad condition. When I saw it I knew I had to get it so I could treat right and give it a spa day. What it really needs is an early retirement. Today when FedEx came I immediately opened the box and looked at what I got. It may be worst than it looked... It's filthy all over, I knew that because that's what it said in the listing, but I never expected it to be this magnitude of filty. But after a nice spa day, it should turn out to be a wonderful machine that had a rough past. Wish me luck as I restore it! Next week I have another machine coming in the mail so stay alert for when I'll post about it, any guesses on what it is? Also how do I clean the cord on it? I will be posting pics as I restore it, also I will be posting after pictures of it too.

Frankly, I think it looks pretty good. It's just dirt, it's not beat to death and should clean up nicely and give years of service.

Tyler, get a bucket of soapy water & rag, wring out the rag, start at one end of the cord & start pulling it through the rag while holding it tight. Don't forget to dunk the rag in the soap often. When your done take another rag with clean water & rinse it, then dry it. Sounds like a lot of work but that's how I clean all mine. Have fun & best of luck!!

Uh...

I see worse Orecks than that almost weekly at the store. People that had 21yrs. of free tune-ups, that show up after 7-8 yrs. with only belts replaced, and beat to death by their housekeepers. Yours looks like a walk in the park buddy.

If you think that Oreck is bad, take a peek into the repair room of a vac shop. What you'll see may turn your stomach a full 360. Some of my mintiest vacuums were preserved under layers of filth older than Rick :P (Ducks and runs FAST!!!! Just kidding, Rick!!!)

The motor on the Electrolux "shop vac" is still airing out in the hot desert sun. Fourth day today and the motor is finally starting to lose the last of that tang.

That Oreck is in not so bad a shape compared to the one I bought for 2 bucks at a yard sale.Lets see--torn outer bag, broken fan and fancase, worn brushroll with busted belt.Bag autopsy revealed several spent .22 shells, several keys(what did they go to?)several pebbles, couple dollars with of change in quarters-least got my money back in a way! Some of the parts are in my junk bin.Had to throw away the cord-was sticky with tobacco residue!!This was the only dud vac I bought from a yard sale. Some cords clean nicely-if its sticky with grease or tobacco smoke residue-do yourself a favor and just get a new cord.
