My friend's vacuum broke and she couldn't afford a new one for a while, so I lent her my old d2. My mother had this vacuum for more than 20 years, then gave it to me; it's what I grew up on, and she was strict about its care and handling. My friend is the conscientious type, so I was surprised and dismayed when I realized she had not paid attention to my care instructions. She seems to have stored it on its (empty) basin most of the time and infrequently cleaned the separator. She had it for a year. My first observation was that the baffle gasket was in need of replacement, and there was some calcium buildup. Should I take apart the motor and clean it before I glue the new gasket in place?

I would and check the bearings for any water intrusion and replace or repack if necessary.
