Today's thrift store dilemma, which if any Hoover to take home. First up a power drive Dial for $10 including attachments. The price tag said the power drive was not working and I noticed it looks to have been disassembled. I absolutely love Dials but I have to admit this color is a bit of a snooze. Four more contenders. The green Convertible was $15 and in great condition. the Concept was $20 and very good cosmetically, but had a worn brush roll and was missing the top handle. the Decade was $15, cosmetically only decent but the bottom was very good and brush roll showed no wear. and lastly a Windtunnel for $30 in good shape over all. I already have a Concept just like the one at the thrift store. Also the Windtunnel was not US made like the others and was more than I wanted to spend. So that left 3 contenders, a Dial, my favorite Hoover model, the green Convertible, and the Decade. I have Convertibles but not that variation with the big head light. And this is only my second chance at a Decade, the first was a couple of years ago, gray with a missing clamp on the dust cup, which I passed on. |

I snagged the Decade. But after the comments here I may go back and add the green Convertible. I'm a sucker for a heavy duty vac like a Conquest and this Decade is so solid I couldn't leave it; and did I mention the "Power Surge" feature? Awesome. The green Convertible would be a great basic vac. It feels much like a Eureka Boss 1934(?), a surprisingly light standard vacuum. The condition was near perfect so I may go back on half-off day and score it if I'm lucky. I did buy that new Conquest bag for a very good price hoping to use it on the Decade because my allergies don't play well with dirt cups. I'm happy to save it for another application like on a Conquest as suggested.

I would have picked up of them, or at least the DAM and Convertibles. Nicholas |

I would be so broke if I stayed in the USA. I mean I spend a sizable amount of money on vacuums here in South Africa as it is and they are scarce here Even convertibles are hard to find here as people just throw stuff away and wouldn't bother taking it to a thrift shop. So I really have to hunt for them.
When I see the pics you guys post on here about your trips to the thrift shops and when I look on ebay, wow I would have so many vacuums if I stayed thier |

Well the funny little Hoover I had a friend pick up for me months ago is home safe and sound and look what tagged along... a nice blue Hoover Dimension! I have wanted one for some time and a thrift store that never has even had a single vacuum for sale before had this one waiting for me at a very nice price ta boot. I only stopped in because I was trying to wait out rush hour. Later after some badly needed spa action I will get some good pics in the sun. So yes Gsheen you're saving cash on excessive vacuum accumulation as today alone I turned up my nose at a Kirby, a Kent/Sanitaire and others. Looking at this photo I realize I paid the same price for the Dimension as I did the unbelievably nasty black Silver King visible on the right! It lived on an ocean going fishing boat and was caked with greasy marine sludge and rust. It was so bad I had to buy it so I could attempt a miracle refurb effort. It gonna be a while before I have energy and time enough for that.

I would suggest just treating the silverking with some anti rust spray now so that you stop the rust before it does any more destruction as you are not going to get to refurb it in a while.
I would love a dimension like that. I had one years ago but I have no clue what happened to it. It was brought back from someone who stayed in the USA |

Haha! Oh, the vacuum thing was around long before 5th grade. We already had a Dimension 1000 at home by then. :-) |

cleaning the Decade. Wow what a machine. Built to a much higher level than Convertibles of the same era like the green one I passed on. I used the quiet and powerful Dimension as it came with a half full bag so I thought I'd top it up with the dirt that came with the Decade. Looking for a bagged Decade to match.

The red pill or the blue, err i mean green?
$10 each, and the Quadraflex w/hose would go with either vac. Neither had tools, the red had an exceptionally clean bag chamber, very low miles. The red also had a higher amp/hp motor. The upright was missing tools, tool lid, and hose, also $10. I brought one home. |

Finally getting the Decade fully cleaned up. I am only out here in California part time so it's been a few months since i started cleaning the Decade up. Got the hood off and the dirt cup assembly removed.
I'm not going to get into the motor as it's running fine and looks to be in good shape. The light bulbs are shot and will be replaced, but other than that, and maybe a belt, this only one needed a lot of cleaning to pass muster. The hood was majorly scuffed but Magic Earser took care of that. Underneath i used copious amounts of compressed air and cotton swabs to make things right. But the lions share if work lay elsewhere.. The bag was, not surprisingly, especially atrocious. I vaced all that crap out you see in the previous post, hosed out the bag, reversed the bag, hosed some more, then i hand washed it in a bucket with soap changing the water three times! One of the pics shows a handful of mud i grabbed when i first hosed the bag. The 'Hoover' decal is sadly gone but it was a pretty compromised to begin with. I would prefer it be there but actually i was not a fan of the look of it. And the filth! I don't think i could have a shakeout/dirt cup vac in the house that i bought used which i didn't wash the bag with soap and water. The bottom of the bucket shot was after the final wash! The water in the first bucket looked like used motor oil. There is also a pic which shows some of the crud in the crevice where the cup meets the bag. Not a lot of sealing happening there! More pics to follow when she's all done. This post was last edited 12/23/2014 at 01:11 |

it came together well I think. The brush roll and handle are in excellent shape causing me to think this
Vac saw limited use but was shoved under furniture regularly. The top of hood was A different vacuum than the rest. It was so scuffed up. But the lens, bumper, and everything else (besides the crazy filthy dirt cup assembly) was fine. The assembly is not that difficult to remove but few consumers would choose to do so as this vacuum seems to attest. Now the cup/bag is fresh as a daisy so it's ready to roll.
