For the first time in about 15 years of conventions, there are literally NO convention pictures from the 2014 convention in Cleveland.

Was there really a convention other than an election of officers? I've heard there are a multitude of pics on FaceBook, but, not all members here are members of FaceBook.

So, the question remains, was there a convention in Cleveland this year and if there was, where are the photos that have been a staple of this site for years? And, if they are not going to be posted here will there be a convention issue of the newsletter of the, "semi non-existent", club?

Thanks to Tom Gasko and his group for their pics and narrative of what happened at the vacuum museum in St. James, MO.

Charlie, I (and others) are wondering the very same thing. Where are the photos and excited descriptions of the vacuum cleaner contests, the dinners, the drinks parties, the displays in the meeting center, the prizes for most outstanding specimens, the visits to members' homes, the Filter Queen tour, local sight-sightseeing trips???

I have already learned the reason for no photos at the Kirby plant, but it does seem odd that hardly any photos or stories have been posted about the rest of the meeting.

I did check out (or tried to check out) the photos on Facebook but they were loading very slowly so I didn't view all of them.

Granted, since I am not a paying member of the VCCC I guess it's really not any of my business. But I surely was looking forward to hearing all about the meeting and and disappointed at the little that's been posted about it.

I'm sure more photos will arrive. I took 33 pics. Some members are just getting home.

So, I'll post MY pics. You'll find them in the Miscellaneous Thread started by Morgan.
Everybody, head on over to the convention thread and I'll tell you all about it.

Steve (Streakers) posted almost 300 pics on Facebook that he took at the convention. The pics all loaded very quickly for me. I only have a Facebook account so that I can see pics that friends post.

Thanks John,

The 2014 VCCC convention was a huge success. There was so much to see an do that I am sure many of us were too tired to post pictures at the time. I know Steve B. has posted many pictures on Facebook and here using a Facebook link.

Many of our folks were not heading directly home or had to work as soon as they arrived home, so I am sure pictures will appear through out the week.

Barb and Chad did a wonderful job of organizing this years events with several surprises along the way. The club truly surprised me with a wonderful gift for serving as president for 8 years. Later today I will post a picture. There were also some very wonderful gifts provided by Kirby for this event. Hopefully we can get some pictures of those gifts as well.

The club is alive and well and will continue to move forward!

Convention...

Our trip to Cleveland was a fun filled drive. Our first stop in Ohio was to Tom Andersons home, where Tom had some machines he was parting with. Then,we had a wonderful diner. After diner we were guest to Mr.Pikes, who was head of the enginering dept.;heading the power drive. We were able to buy somethings out of his collection.I purchased a electric Hoover carving knife;that I have been wanting. All new in the Hoover box;with the inter bronze box with the emblem of Hoover on it.
At Kirby,No video's or pictures were aloud period! They made that very clear when we
were in the lobby. The only pictures will be outside the door. Also,it was the same
formate at Cleveland Wood Products.
At Filter Queen, pictures were taken. They opened the plant and we had refreshments a short movie of Filter Queen History.Where we toured the Executive office's,design and plant. In the plant area we could talk to the workers;where they would tell you what they did on the line. Most workers can do any job on the line.I found most had at least 10 to 30 years with the company. It's very much a family. So,just be patient and the picture's will come.

2014 VCCC convention

The convention was great! We had over 40 members present. Kirby, Cleveland Wood Products, and Filter Queen went out of their way to show us their operations. Luke Gehart opened his home to us and what a fabulous collection with over 300 vacuum cleaners! The club paid for all meals. Kirby gave us wine glasses, alarm clocks, table pen sets, 100th anniversary pins etc etc. CWP gave us all a brushroll, apron, and special cleaning brush. Filter Queen gave us all beach towels! The tours were all outstanding. Fun was had by all in attendance. Barb

Some pictures are posted below!

Marc Turbyfill and I were at the convention. I had a laptop with me that belongs to my school. I do not use it to up-load pictures for my personal use...therefore, did not post pictures while at the convention. Will post pictures after I get settled. Just dropped Marc off at O'Hare early this morning!

For those that normally attend the convention, you missed an excellent opportunity. We toured the following: CWP (Cleveland Wood Products), Kirby Mfg, Health-Mor Mfg. The Director of Sales and Marketing for the Health-Mor Company lives in Florida. When in town he stays at Crown Plaza Hotel where our convention was booked. It was a bonus for us, when he found out about the VCCC, we were invited to tour the factory in Cleveland.

All the factories had refreshments for us; we had lunch at the Kirby factory.

All three companies showered us with some nice trinkets and gifts: brush rolls, hose hangers, desk pen sets, alarm clocks, aprons, beach towels. All in attendance received a Kirby T-shirt with the old Kirby emblem and a rectangle lapel pin marked with the numbers 100 with the words Kirby running across it with the dates 1914-2014.

We had 40 members and quests in attendance.

It would be great if pictures could be posted in the vintage forum so that non paying members of VL could see them!

Ok folks...

streakers's profile picture
Here's the deal...

I took in total 444 pics during the convention... (Let me tell you - it's back breaking work with a heavy lens!)

To prevent any abrasion or aggrevation to anyone or any groups I chose not to post the pics on the forum... (I've read in the past about how people complain that it slows the loading of the page down too much) so instead I created a 'public' Facebook photo album to share those pics... My understanding was that 'anyone', friend or not of myself, could and would be able to view the pics provided they had the link... (it's worked in the past with various clubs and events that I've photographed for) However it seems that people still can't see those public pics... I may try adding another link and see if that helps...

The link I posted in the Miscellanea Forum under an existing thread about the convention (nothing worse than 12 different threads about the same thing right?!?!) as again - I'm not wanting to step on anyones toes...

I, however unlike Tom, do not have the knowledge to share names and models to create a 'commentary' of the pics (I've recommended people put that in on the Facebook album) so therefore If I did spend the time creating a thread - it would look kind of silly...

Otherwise - it's really easy... Open up a Facebook account and send me a friend request, you'll get access to all the pics you want!

I did also share the pics with another member who will no doubt publish some in an upcoming newsletter...

If I share them on Facebook between the Vac Groups - which ones want them? Any help is appreciated folks!

Cheers
Ste!

How fun. I toured the Kirby plant in 2000 and I still remember all the Kirbys setting on their Plexiglass boxes in the lobby.

Lots of vacs and three great tours too! Got some good tech talk, a terrific awards and dinner banquet... and best of all - lots of fun for all.
I was so impressed with CWP, Kirby and Filter-Queen. All were very engaged with the group and clearly worked hard to ensure their tours were memorable. They all very much succeeded.
Ultimately, I enjoyed the positive energy and couldn't help but enjoy the event totally. So glad to be part of it!

I'm glad to hear that the convention was such a success and that folks had so much fun. And thanks for the photos; and I'll try the Facebook link again today. The sluggish loading might have been due to heavy bandwidth.

DId it really happen?

If a bear.... OK, if a tree falls in the woods, and it is not documented instantaneously on the WWW, did it really fall, though evidence supports it?

I'm just sayin'.....

WE were all given a Kirby T shirt, and were asked to wear them at The Kirby Factory. And, so I did. I also wore the pin, AND my HOOVER 'hoodie'. You all know about me AND hoover HOODS, LOL. If you can't serve food in one, WEAR one! I surprised many by 'being a good sport".. Thanks, Barb.

You would have been so proud of the people who attended the convention in Cleveland. Right now I'm home writing thank you email and purring like a kitten, or like my Caligula (remember him?) Kirby did us proud as did Cleveland Wood Products, and Filter Queen. And look at what graced the entrance of the meeting room

I hope your dad had a happy birthday. Thanks for helping me start all this back in 82, it's been awesome.

The convention was fantastic it was one of the best ones. Touring CWP, Kirby and Filter Queen was a great experience and all three companies treated us very nicely! It was so nice of CWP to give us all free brush rolls, scrub brushes and the apron. It was a real treat to eat in the Kirby café. Thanks to Steve Brazil for taking such excellent pictures. For those of you who haven’t seen the pictures on Facebook I invite you to do so. Steve took around three hundred pictures and Facebook is really the best site to display those. It was great to see everyone. I consider the VCCC to be my extended family, because we always have such a fantastic time at the conventions.

I’m looking forward to St. Louis next year! Can’t wait!

Being a brand new member of the VCCC, this convention was a real treat to meet so many friendly folks who share a common interest in quality-made vacs, be them from yesteryear or this year. It was a great opportunity to be able to visit the CWP and Filter Queen plants, but the pinnacle of the day was to be able to visit the Kirby plant and enjoy a great lunch in their cafeteria. Thanks to all for posting your photos, with my special thanks going out to Steve for all the photos on Facebook.

Mea culpa . . . In my above post, I forgot to thank Luke Gebhart for inviting us to his home to hehold his extensive collection. The weather was gorgeous, the pizza lunch was tasty, and seeing how well his collection is displayed all made for an enjoyable field trip.

Reading all of these threads brings a tear to my eyes.

It was just a week ago at this time Barb, Michael and I were meeting with the hotel staff to get our room ready for the weekend.

As always, it was so much fun, very well organized, lots to see and do, but best part of all was getting together with my vacuum family!

Hi jscarlato.

As the founder of this club let me officially welcome you.

You picked the best time to join, as you got to see this crazy group in action, be part of the meetings, contests and elections, not to mention three factory tours in one day (which I think is a record for the club, but don't quote me.) You also got to meet collectors, some of whom have been with the club since day one.

Since you must have dozens of questions about the club, and vacuum cleaner history in general, please feel free to contact me at Ralextaber@gmail.com.

Thanks for helping make my weekend truly awesome.
Alex Taber.

Hi jscarlato.

caligula's profile picture
As you're new to all this, you may not have seen pictures of the original club museum, which began as a spare bedroom in my home, located in Naperville, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago.) It was not my first display however, the first recorded one was in my mom's home in Chesterton, Indiana (Indiana Dunes national park) which was club headquarters from 1982-1985.

While I never took credit for it, the real start of the club was in August 1980 as I was a personal guest of Stacy Krammes at the Hoover Historical Center. It was during that trip that I lay the groundwork for the V.C.C.C., and from there, a lot of behind the scenes action was starting to take place. So when I bought the house in Naperville, exactly two months after hosting the first club meeting, I loaned my personal collection to the club, and made it the first official vacuum cleaner museum.

The room first held a few machines, but grew continually till the early 1990's when it overtook the room, and got a building of it's own. Now it was not only the display room, but served as meeting room, and data center for the club.

The location was perfect for us as there was a motel a block away, and numerous restaurants. There was even a Dunkin Donuts on my corner so we could start the meetings with coffee and donuts.

Designing a display room is easy. Hang peg board to display small things like attachments, wands, cords, and hang bags. I line the floor, and ceiling with hoses, and place attachment boxes behind the uprights, with instruction books for all to see. Tank and canister machines go on shelving though the Electrolux's get a place of their own, as do hand-vacs.

I 've been fortunate to have my own home, thus was free to display my collection, but now, I'm like a lot of members who's other half isn't into any of this, so the next display which in development will not be on our property.

Here's s brief look at the evolution of the V.C.C.C. display and club museum, as well as a few of my non-electric one and two person operated machines that date from 1890-1915.

Alex Taber.
