The spectrum 900 shares the same awkwardly shaped 3-prong pn plug as the original windtunnel canister, and some other canisters of the 90's time frame I believe. I know on the windtunnel, the 3rd wire controls the headlight, but I heard that in the older 3-prong hoover hoses the 3rd prong is just a placement holder/un-necessary ground. I ask because I recently acquired a spectrum and powermax canister and I thought the spectrum's hose would fit the powermax, which it would, if that 3rd prong wasn't there. So if the spectrum doesn't really need that prong, I'll yank it out to use that hose on the powermax too.

Depends on the model!

The Spectrum Canister was a TOL model. There are 3 prongs from power nozzle to hose and 3 prongs from suction unit to hose, depending on the model.

The Spectrum canister has the Quadraflex Powermatic nozzle which has a toe operated bare floor switch which on the Dimension 1000 series kept the headlight on if brush roll motor was turned off.

The PowerMax units have a PowerMax power nozzle with no foot pedal. The 3rd wire on hose of PowerMax units is to run electric for headlight if bare floor position was selected on switch on hose. The PowerMax series has a wide range of units. Some have a T shaped plug but only 2 electric prongs and NO hose controls. Others such as the TOL PowerMax Ultra S3620 or S3611 have 3 prong connections to suction unit and power head with controls on hose for variable suction speed, brush roll on/off and entire system on/ off.

Depending on which PowerMax model you have you may need an entirely different hose. I definitely do not recommend cutting off any prongs or the 3rd connector. You don't want to mess up any internal boards inside units or short out any parts.

I love the PowerMax series to Windtunnel series. Machines I've owned:
PowerMax Runabout S3614, PowerMax Deluxe S3608, PowerMax Deluxe S3607, PowerMax S3603-040, PowerMax Supreme S3530, Turbo Power 5000 S3577, Windtunnel S3630, Windtunnel Plus S3639, PowerMax Deluxe S3601.

I am finding more hoses that may be better for that model.Don't pull prongs out yet.Other plastic Hoover will go in dumpster for lack of interest.I then hope to sort wands, hoses & power nozzles that are also turning up.

Thanks Jimmy! Let me know if you find the two-prong hose for the powermax along with the proper PowerMax pn and 1 or 2 power nozzle wand sets. Also, the base housing on the spectrum pn you gave me is busted up beyond any repair, so if you have can find the powermax pn and any other compatible base that'd be great!!
Rob, I have the cream colored Powermax with the two-prong t-shaped plug. Obviously now I need to find the proper hose and power nozzle for my powermax, as the Spectrum's are not compatible.
