I got this Rather dirty and scratched up Hoover a few weeks ago. It was Not in a bad condition for its age though, Its only actual defect were some dry bearings and a broken bag zip.

Its a rather unusual model , The Green Models were far more popular.

So I finally got to strip it down and rebuild it.

The motor was fully rebuilt and bearing re greased ( I made my own temporary grease gun for this) The brush roll was resprayed as it was rusty.

I forgot to Take before pics of the motor but it was grubby.

Here it is all cleaned up.

I needed to grease the brush roll bearings as they are not available new here. I made one out of a large syringe. I bored out the hole in the center and it worked. Its not perfect but it works for me

Great re-hab Gareth! You brought it back to life! Looks great, a very good model over here in the states. I have one with that ranger style hood in that color and the matching box top bag with the JC Penney brand name on it.

Is that bag cloth or vinyl, I have a hoover USA  convertible model u4019 that needs a new zipper on it's original vinyl bag soon. so I am wonder how if possible to do that.

Great find.

Also I'd like to know how to make a grease gun out of a syringe.

What kind of vacuum is the one off to the left in the background that's brown & yellow? I've never seen one like that before.

That is a Columbus Concord Polisher

It was a special store model for a store here called Dions

Underneath it is the same machine as the columbus b33  polisher.

Back in the bad old days in this country due to embargo's placed on the country importing was a problem. What this did though was to spur on some great engineering and many products were designed and made locally. If it was bought in SA during the 70's and 80's 90 % of the time it was made here. From Mercs and Bmw's to vacuums Kettles and Toasters.

It was a bad time for SA as far as Human rights went and its a shamfull past but because nothing could be imported it lead to great innovation, Something which has left us now as its cheaper to import.

The columbus carpet saver vacuum and its twin electrolux model is my most sought after machine. They were designed here in SA along with the b33 polisher in the middle of the page
