Does anybody have an original 1960s-1970s Montgomery Ward Upright made by Eureka they would like to sell? I have been looking for one of those for a long time now. I have a Wards by Hoover, but not by Eureka. Please let me know. I have not seen one on ebay for several months now, close to a year even.

Thanks

I just ran across a small bag (maybe 3 or 4) of Montgomery Wards-labeled canister vacuum cleaner bags in a thrift store. Let me know if you'd want them.

I will also check another thrift store where I saw a tan-colored Montgomery Wards upright. I don't recall looking at the manufacturer's label to see if it was made by Eureka Williams or Hoover. If the tag doesn't say is there a way to tell the difference?

Tell me what your top price would be.

Why don't you buy it and take a picture. Then, I will decide on a price. A tan Wards. Sounds like Eureka. I do have things that I am looking on it. But still take a picture please.

1. The cord has to be all original, not some replacement.
2. Original Bag with no holes
3. Practically everything original, except the brush, because I will probably buy a Vibra Groomer.

Look at the label. If it has an old Eureka Label, then its a Eureka.

Ok, I'll check it out tomorrow. I will say, I have recently seen a MW label on a vacuum cleaner (not Eureka or Hoover) but can't recall if it was that one or one online.

If it would happen to be the one in the store what does that tell you?

Also, what color would an original cord be and how would it be marked?

Would there be a certain logo on the dust bag to tell if it's original?

Sorry, but my knowledge of MW cleaners is very limited.

Now that i think of it, there was an attachment box with it with white plastic attachments and hose; although they could have been brought in separately.

I never saw an MW Label online on an upright. If it is in the store, then that means it could be all original. I think an original cord would be white, but I am not sure. Just take a picture and I can see if the cord is original. I would have to look at the bag.

Wards!

The cord should be an older, white Eureka cord. This model sounds as if it should have a cord winder, if it is Eureka-made, that is. Take a look at the label, or better yet,a picture!Laughing

I would love to have a Wards with a Cord Winder. I have no idea why those are so rare, and when they are on ebay, the price is so ridicilous. Is there another website that sells Vintage Upright Vacuum Cleaners?

It would be awesome to find a Wards like this.

I wish someone was selling one like that. It seems those 1970s Wards are very rare. And when they are on ebay, the starting bid is like $150 and you have like 45 bids. Even when I got my Wards made by Hoover with the Dust Cup, I had really tough competition. It seems Wards is a very rare brand.

I am still wanting to see a picture of that vacuum at the thrift store.

any private label machine made by a major manufacturer ie hoover, eureka or even kirby are rear. wards, penncrest, western auto and wizard are all rare private label brands. penncrest (and subsequently jc penney branding) and wards are the most desirable. i got a wards eureka with a cordreel from 1974 here at thifttown for a local collector for $13. its all about knowing what type of estate sales to hit and what thrift stores in your local area harbor old junk.

in time things will come. it took me over a year to find my 1979 sears best powermate. getting to befriend collectors, and going to mini meets and networking with local collectors is the best way to find machines you want. that's how i have gotten over half of my collection is thru other collectors who know what i like and i know personally.

many people here rarely let go of machines they collect, as they were hard to find to aquire. rare machines are RARELY let got of unless a better duplicate is aquired.

Ok, I guess I will just wait. Maybe some estate sales in El Paso will have those Vacuum Cleaners. I never really thought of going to an estate sale. So that is why Wards is rare, because it is a private label. And people are willing to pay over $200 to have one of those. Now I see why it can be hard to bid on vacuums on ebay at times. Hopefully one day, I will find a Wards made by Eureka.

Here are some photos of the Montgomery Wards Signature vacuum cleaner that I'd mentioned before. Its label just says Montgomery Wards--not Hoover or Eureka, but the attachments are by Eureka:

They're asking $20 for the cleaner, and $5 for the attachments.

I have never seen a Eureka Wards look like that. At least that style. What model number is it? I can't see the model number very well.

Post# 280953 , Reply# 18   5/18/2014 at 14:22 (3,601 days old) by phoenixman2014 ()

That actually looks like its in perfect condition. Can you take a better picture of the base please? I may buy it from you if you are willing to sell it. So $20 for the vacuum and $5 for the attachments. How much would shipping be? I still need to give it some thought. But it seems really appealing to me so far.

Thanks

My grandmother had ......

It is definitly a Eureka with the Wards name and color scheme, my grandmother gave me the money to get her one of those so I did not have to take my vacuum to her house each week to clean. It would be middle 70's and had only the low and norm setting with a vinyl bag. Hers was the blue color they had since the 60's, handle and all were the same color. Lasted for years.......obviously not the tol back then like mine was, but it still did a good job. If I remember correctly, it cost around $60 to 70 dollars back then.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay--I'm back and forth on my computer today.

Anyway, here is the technical data of the machine:

Model: SP847A
Serial: 67X 1835435
Amps: 3.3
Volts 120
Company on Label: "Montgomery Ward & Co."
Bags: Eureka F & G bags
Attachments: Model 60, Type D (complete set according to the sketch on the box)

The cord appears to be original--don't know about the bag.

If you are interested in paying $25.00 for the cleaner and attachments let me know. I don't know how much shipping would be but would only charge you the actual cost. I could just let you know after I mailed what the charges were.

Sorry, I can't take better photos. I did not see any major flaws--scratches, dents, et cetera.

The store closes at 5:00 P M. today (CDT), so unless you want to take a chance that no one else will purchase it let me know by around 4:30 P. M. if you are interested.

Don't know if you're interested anymore, but here's a close-up of the hood:

Post# 280970 , Reply# 22   5/18/2014 at 17:11 (3,601 days old) by phoenixman2014 ()

Alright, so I would just have to pay $25? I will give it thought. So if this is from the mid 70s, then it might actually be very nice. I have never seen a Wards that looks like this. If I do decide to buy it, how can I pay for it? Paypal or cash?

Post# 280971 , Reply# 23   5/18/2014 at 17:12 (3,601 days old) by phoenixman2014 ()

How does the motor sound? Did you test it? Sorry if it is late. I just came back from swimming.

Post# 280979 , Reply# 24   5/18/2014 at 17:56 (3,601 days old) by Paul (USA)

No problem about the delay, but if you decide to make the purchase you'll have to wait until I can get there again later tomorrow afternoon.

Sounds like you're in good shape to do some cleaning if you're a swimmer. Hope you had a good workout.

You would pay $25 + actual shipping with Paypal.

Actually, I didn't test it but I will. It does have a partially-filled bag, but if it seems like there's issues I'll let you know before purchasing.

Post# 280980 , Reply# 25   5/18/2014 at 18:10 (3,601 days old) by phoenixman2014 ()

Alright, thanks. Yea, please test it.

Post# 280994 , Reply# 26   5/18/2014 at 20:00 (3,601 days old) by Paul (USA)

It would be easier if you would let me know what your plan is sometime before late afternoon tomorrow. I don't have a smartphone, so I have to go back and forth from the store to my computer to connect with you (I made two trips there today).

So, let me know if you want to buy it if the motor sounds like it's in good shape (keep in mind that I'm not a tech, so I would just be listening for obvious defects); or if you're going to pass. Once you've made a decision I will want you to stand by it. I wouldn't want to buy it and then have you tell me that you changed your mind.

My overall impression so far is that it's in gently-used condition, and it doesn't have any offensive odors.

Some things to think about:

Do you want a MW collection of different types and colors?

Do you want just TOL machines?

Do you want to collect from a certain era?

Post# 281039 , Reply# 27   5/19/2014 at 00:45 (3,601 days old) by phoenixman2014 ()

Well I was kind of expecting a Wards with a Cord Winder from the 70s or 60s, but obviously those are impossible to find. And when one is up on ebay, there are like over 100 bids. Also I have a feeling that bag might not be original. Though I am not sure. I think it would said Wards on it. I will let you know tomorrow afternoon what my final decision is.

theyre not impossible to find. very rare yes, impossible, no. just gotta be patient. like i said, i found one at a local thrift store that harbors vintage machines and was only $13. my two commericial kirbys (comvac 1300 and american lincoln) were total dumb luck finds. i wasnt even looking for them at all.

ive been waiting over 2 years to find an all original electrolux tan g and keep very close watch on ebay. if the price is right and bids stay low, i'll snag it up. (since the tan g with original pn1 and sheath is very rare my "rare" machine limit is $100 vs $45 for common/ uncommon machines)

also dont settle for what you dont want just to have something. youll loose interest in it, since you really didnt want it, and itll be resold or worse, donated... just hang on and wait for what you really want. if it 2-3 years from now then so be it. but dont rush to grab something that isnt really wholly what youre desiring. in this community given some patience, youll find what youre looking for

Just to throw in my 2 cents worth, the bag on that economy MW Dial-a-Nap is a replacement. Montgomery Wards uprights were sold with bags sporting their own graphics and brandname.

It should clean really well though! A classic Eureka design!

I wonder if they have archived records of their appliances. There is no product history section on the website. It may be worth your while to contact them and inquire.

Familiarizing yourself with the various logos MW has had will give you an idea of the age of its cleaners, so I will post what I have found online. Depending on how involved you want your MW collection to be you could also seek to purchase MW catalogs on ebay or elsewhere. Just some thoughts.

An overview of Montgomery Ward from its homepage:

For more than 140 years, "Montgomery Ward" has been a well-known and trusted catalog brand. In 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward established the first mail-order business with an innovative single-sheet catalog offering 163 items. Montgomery Ward's superior service and impressive assortment of goods led to rapid growth, and by 1904 the original Montgomery Ward company was mailing catalogs to three million customers.

In 2008 the "Montgomery Ward" brand was acquired by a subsidiary of The Swiss Colony, Inc. (now known as Colony Brands, Inc.), a family-owned direct-mail business that strives to continue the heritage, traditions and values of the brand that were inspired by the founder, Aaron Montgomery Ward. Today, Montgomery Ward offers one-stop shopping for quality items at affordable prices—and quick, convenient delivery.

1960s logo (marked as 1872-1968, but that doesn't seem correct):

So I made my decision. I am going to pass on this one. I'd rather wait until I find a 1960s or 1970s Wards with a Cord Winder. So you do not have to worry about buying it.

I just acquired this Montgomery Ward's upright thanks to Chad. I'm thinking it's mid 60s? I have another distribulator with more brushes on it. I guess the early distribulator didn't have the third row of brushes. Anyway, it's pretty neat the way the attachments connect like the older Eureka uprights. I have not had time to clean it up yet.
