I have recently acquired a Hoover model U4034, that dates from October 1975. I would be grateful if anyone could provide me with any information on this model.

Any details of the British market Senior models from the 1970s/80s would be most welcome.

Thank you very much.

Robin.

Well...

Hi Robin
It's a pretty rare machine...
It's the only UK market machine to use the style of Hood more commonly used in Australia and the US
Mine dates from September 1976

Weren't this type imported when Hoover UK workers were on strike over pay, and they needed models to sell, so imported them from the USA and changed the motors, or something like that. These style were never intended to be sold in the UK.

PS - Nice phones Seamus - never knew you collected them as well.

Uk Strike...

Hey Steve
You are thinking of the U4003 which came over in 1974. This is a UK built machine although maybe the hoods were sourced from Australia?.
The hood was made obsolete pretty quickly- I remember seeing some service info from 1977 stating the hood was obsolete and had been replaced with a standard Ranger hood in the same colour.

The U4003 being the second from left in this picture. I assume the difference was in the bag design, the cable wraps being on the other side of the handle and the on/off switch position?

Thanks for pointing that out Seamus - learn something new every day.

The headlight lens is longer and thinner on the US version, so they are different hoods, although they look similar.

Admitting he didn't like the looks of a true HOOVER!? The next thing you know he'll be filling that 2nd cellar with HOOVERS, to make room for the ELECTROLUXES upstairs!

I was so used to the 1076 type hood, I say thse new hoods when I was about 16 it was a shock!
I'll admit, my least fav type is a ranger. But, I have several... HOOVERS are like cats: there's no such thing as an ugly one. We all juat like some better! Here's that "other" style.

I have to admit that I don't consider this machine to be the most elegant of classic Hoover designs, but if you want one of every model, you must take the rough with the smooth.
