Electrolux History

Wow John,
That is great material and much appreciated. What a shot of history!
Makes me HAPPY to get rid of my plastic China uprights and almost ashamed of the great past names they put on appliances now.

Thanks very much for posting these materials. I have the same books they came from.

It is interesting to note how companies make errors in their history. For example:

"....The Automatic E was the next automatic cleaner .... a new innovation called a halo, was added .... This halo was replaced on the Automatic F by a cord-winder...."

That's incorrect. The halo first appeared on the Model LXI, the last iteration of the Model LX.

The Model LXI came out with a new chrome-plated steel rear-end (instead of aluminum), permanent rear wheels on an axle, a large swiveling wheel in the front-end, and was the first model with a flip-open cord winder (optional equipment, as was the cord winder ever since it was first introduced with the Model XXX in 1949).

The halo was standard equipment on the LXI, E, E-A, F, R and L and remained so until the Model G came out with the cord winder integrated into the motor housing.

It wasn't until the plastic-body 1453 came out that there was another model with a halo as standard equipment and a cord winder an an optional accessory.

The halo

you said was on the LXI I do not recall ever seeing. You would either buy the cordreel or not have anyway to wind the cord up. Then the E came out and the Halo. It might have been put on by sales people but not the company. I am just going by memories from 58 years ago.

Great stuff, John! Thanks for posting. I have never seen this information before. Was this ever updated? If so, please post that as well when you find the time. I enjoy reading about the earlier years, but company and product information since 1963 would be interesting, as well.

There were actually two different models -- LX and LXI. Here are the differences found on the LXI:

-- new-style two-piece rear cover: a chrome-plated rim that's screwed to the back of the machine into which a chromeplated cover is affixed with a thumb screw. This new rear cover is in the same shape and style as the Model E rear cover, but is chrome-plated.

-- new cord halo and cord hook on the rear end. Note in the photos below the metal "finger" around which the end of the cord is affixed after it's wound around the halo.

-- new optional flip-open cord winder. When you loosen the thumb-screw at the top, the cord winder swivels open instead of coming off of the machine. Much more convenient. This new feature was also introduced on the Model E.

-- new rear axle with wheels attached to the axle with cotter-pins, as opposed to the after-market wheel-sets that clip onto the end of the runners.

-- new large swiveling wheel in the front, in place of where the bag storage compartment was formerly located.

-- The model number ID for the LX is stamped into the metal housing under the handle grip, in very tiny letters. On the LXI, it is indeed stamped "Model LXI."

I wasn't even aware of the existence of the Model LXI until I found one in a thrift shop about 30 years ago. When I first saw it I was immediately fascinated with its differences from the LX, most notably the rear cover and the fact that it had a halo. (See the photo below from inside a carton of self-sealing bags that notes both models and the Model E.)

This was surely just a transitional model at the end of the LX run and probably made for a very short time. I've only seen three or four of them over the years, some with halos and some with cord winders.

Okay, here are some photos. They are not of my machine; I think they're from an eBay auction. I couldn't find any photos of my LXI on my Mac. I can go downstairs and take photos of it if you like. Mine is identical in every regard to the machine seen below.

Then, finally, I found a Model E a few years ago with a chrome-plated rear cover. That cover, along with other minor design and functional details, has led me to believe that this was the very first version of the Model E, probably made for a very short time and maybe even a factory sample or prototype. Because all the many other Model Es I've seen over the years have all had hammertone-blue rear covers. See link below.

I can get some shots of my LXI if you need, but I have the cord winder on mine. Somewhere I have the halo for it. It looks pretty much like the one you posted.

By the way, for new after filters I have been getting the Renaissance filters and cutting them to fit my LX, LXI, E and Automatic E.

Actually, when the multi-layer filter bags came out (introduced with the Model F), Electrolux recommended no longer using a rear filter.

The original blue and gray bags introduced with the Model LX (and also used with the E and E-A) only had one later of filter paper inside.

Electrolux engineers added two more layers to the new-style bags for a total of three filter layers. They called these bags "4-ply." With each package of 4-ply bags came a cardboard gasket. Instructions on the envelope containing the gasket indicated that the filter was to be removed and the gasket inserted in its place.

(The Model F and all models thereafter didn't have a changeable rear filter, until the plastic-body machines were introduced).

Using the filter does reduce the motor noise somewhat, but it also impedes airflow and thus diminishes the suction. It also causes the motor to run hotter, especially when using the machine for extended periods of time.

As long as you are using multi-filter bags, especially if you use hepa multi-filter bags, you don't need a filter in the rear.

I know that I still see some carbon dust from the brushes on the after filter. Another filter that I have made was using a cardboard templet for the footprint of the filter and gluing one layer of flannel to the cardboard. You still get airflow but it catches the carbon dust from the brushes as well as any residue of dirt left in the motor.

is May 1 and the start of festivities for the Indianapolis 500. Electrolux sponsored Mario and Michael Andretti from 1983 to 1985. Here are some pictures from those days.
