That Lady Bug vacuum looks very similar to a vacuum under the name of Homelite in Britain. The Avanti isn't all that far off by looks, either, especially in the bag topper area. I'm betting they're both made by the same foreign company.

Kirbyloverdan I have a question about your Platinum by Aerus if you don't mind. If you put the tool caddy on the top of the wand where the handle meets it does it stay attached? For example, if you pull the handle out to clean with the dusting brush does the caddy remain firmly attached to the top of the wand? I'm a little unsure about how it attaches to the wands. I'm just about getting ready to buy one later this year. Thanks man.

I have a Platinum and yes the caddy does remain attached to the wand. I have the caddy attached to the lower wand however as I find that position to be more convenient. The caddy just slips over the top of the wand and there is a groove that it slides into to prevent it from moving.

Thanks countryguy, I had wondered what kept it attached when the handle or wand was pulled out of one end.

Kirbyloverdan....are you going to show some pics of your Hoover Windtunnel Air Cordless soon? I am really interested to see what you think of this vacuum! One of my friends on Facebook posted some pics, but my concern is the powerhead bristles look like they are long & soft, & wouldn't effectively clean carpeting. The Westinghouse Unplugged also had this problem.

What ever happened to department store displays and in-home demonstrations? I don't '#', I do not face book,I am not one for the modern era! Of course,I am only one of the millions of modern youth who use such things as ashtrays and mobile telephones, for I am still one of typewriters and rotary telephones! It's a shame what's became of today, or at least in my mind!Tongue out

At least Hoover has better battery technology today than Eureka did in the 90s, everything was going cordless then, especially those bricks of a mobile phone!

Dan, that green Fantom in reply #38 is really nice! That was made for Euro Pro by Sanyo, before the Panasonic buy-out. Fantom named their models "Fantom Twister", & Sanyo called theirs "Sanyo Dirt Hunter". One thing I really like about them is the fact that the pet hair gets compacted in the bin, extends the cleaning time between emptying. I had a Fantom Twister in my collection, but didn't like the fact the HEPA filter wasn't well sealed, so I decided to junk it. Regretting that now though!!

Just so you know, Euro Pro never entirely shut Fantom down. Here in Canada, at Zellers (before they went out of business last year) they had a little bagless straight suction canister &, believe it or not, a bagged powerteam canister! The bagged powerteam canister sold for $249.99 in Zellers & used HEPA cloth bags & a washable HEPA filter. Only bad thing about it was the bag compartment was really small & bags would have filled up really quick!

I totally forgot about that vacuum the Clear Track . Fantom was the first nationally advertised bag less vacuum . People only knew of Amway clear track if they used their products . We all know Hoover as being the true first bag less with the dirt cup models but the Clear Track and Fantom were first to use cyclonic technology and had a complete plastic dirt capture system w/o a cloth bag attached .

Ah the Triton 1000!

As Gareth says, yes they were sold by LG. Also, though there were a few Dirt Devil variants of this in the U.S with commercial steel pole handles instead of the plastic one.

The LG VU5545NBS was a Which UK winner as well as named "Slimax." It couldn't be any more plastic if it tried, but it did offer excellent performance. I have yet to find another upright on the market that had such as a simple "slide catch" unlocking sole plate on the base to change the drive belt and I adored the flip down door at the back of the upright to store spare drive belts.

James Dyson licensed his cyclone technology to Johnson wax in the early eighties and designed them a commercial upright vacuum, later when Johnson wax decided to get out of the vacuum industry Dyson looked for other licenses. He and Amway almost struck up a deal in about 85 but it fell through. Later in about 87, Amway brought out the CMS 1000 which infringed on Dyson's patents, they went to court and settled some years later. At the same time Dyson had made a deal with Iona and they later brought out what would become the Thunder, which was the same as the older Johnson wax, Dyson designed upright.

My Extensive Collection Part 4

Dan,
Where did the Kirby is best come from? I thought you were all about Aerus/Lux?
You said you had bought 100's for your family so I assumed you preferred the Electrolux machines.

I have the Kirby Legend ll which I bought new and used from 1988-2006. It was a good machine but I have several vacuums that will out clean my Kirby.
Mine just got too heavy to carry up and down the stairs and it did not clean the style carpet at this house as well. You can't get the adjustment at the right level. It is either too high and loses the seal or too low and hard to push.
My Kirby was well made but not good at filtration. Even the hepa bags start smelling after a few uses.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with the new model and hope they maintain their high quality.

It comes from MY love for Kirby YES I have purchased over a hundred Aerus Electrolux vacuums for family and friends since the 70's because only my Grandmother was a Kirby/Hoover convertible person .
My entire family dislike Kirby because of their weight and the attachment set up .
I do LOVE Aerus/Electrolux my second choice but ALWAYS prefer my Kirby's over all the vacuums I own HENCE my name on this site . Out of all the machines I own a Kirby always out cleans every machine because of the direct auction and bell shaped nozzle . It has great filtration and mine never smell . I always love the height adjustment I always click it until the tone changes then after I hear the tone change it gets clicked once more and it's perfectly sealed to the carpet . I have no problems with its weight 22lbs is not heavy to me . Kirby will always maintain it's quality they spend tons of money producing a Quality Reliable product for 100 years . When I run my Kirby every day for a few weeks straight then take my E series Onyx with the newest PN I barely get anything in the water so that tells me that the Kirby is doing a tremendous job on my deep pile frieze carpets .

Hoover Lark at its new home my ocean front condo wanted this here instead of my Kirby Dual Santronic because the Hoover was made around the same time the condos were built so a 50's vacuum in a 50's condo for display was appropriate .

I have only seen one Lark vacuum Mike at Greenville Sew&Vac showed me one a woman brought in for repair-he tried to get the machine for me as a trade in towards a new Meile,Sebo,Simplicity.Mike said she wouldn't budge-she wanted her old Lark fixed.DRAT-another one that got away!Would like to have a Lark-a machine from the past that could be a potential Oreck killer. And liked how you could use a hose and hand tools on it just like a Kirby.

My grandmother would never give this Lark to me I begged for years she said it yours when in gone she put it in her will that I was to get all her vacuums .
It does remind me of a Kirby especially with the rear step on switch .

Sounds like Lark owners don't want to give up their machines-like the customer at the place here.I did notice the Lark she has was built in Britain. The ball shaped back switch button is unique!Too bad these machines still arten't made-bet people would like them!

Besides us collectors the Lark is a very outdated vacuum . Metal vacuums are a thing of the past today's consumer don't like heavy vacuums period and bag less is what the consumer is into right now .
Keep your metal machines and enjoy them as they only appeal to collectors .

The good thing about the Lark and other older Hoover designs---they WORKED-unlike a lot of newer bagless plastivacs sold today-and that Lark could last decades if the owner takes care of it.The Lark will be running and doing its job after several of the newer plastivacs are thrown into the dumpster. Then they grace the landfills. The dirt in the vac at least goes to the landfill.

Forgotten about planned obsolescence ? Most companies today don't care about a vacuum lasting decades if you want a long lasting vacuum buy Tacony , Kirby , Aerus , Rainbow , TriStar , Filter queen ect . That's what it comes down to today the newest rage is cordless .

That is what I do-buy Kirby,Vintage metal machines, metal Royals,Tacony products.Won't buy and not interested in plasti bagless "dumpster vacs".I like cordless power tools and mowers-wonder about cordless vacuums, though. With new battery and motor technology will expect good performing models soon.I think some conpanies overlook customers who do want a QUALITY durable peice of equipment and don't want to be replacing disposable items every few years-and for eco types--better for the enviornment.

Love the Caddy Vac!

bagintheback's profile picture

You have quite a collection of modern Hoovers. If I remember correctly, I believe the green version was the original. They really should bring back the tool caddy. The way they have the attachments set up on most of the T-Series is so awkward.

What other Hoovers did Target carry when you bought it? Target seems to have most of the cheapo models these days, and I always thought the Caddy Vac was a pretty high-ranking model.

I love my Hoover collection of all my rare convertibles and my rare modern Hoovers also .

I dont remember what Target sold back then I know they always carried Hoovers higher end vacuums though . This was a birthday gift .

The caddy vac especially this one is an amazing vacuum I would love to see Hoover use another tool caddy for their vacuums it's a great idea so you don't have to carry tools if you didn't want to .

I am proud to own my great grandmothers model 150 with bag check indicator from 1939 it is in amazing mint condition our family took very good care of everything we owned and still do . Bag was replaced in the 70`s as the other one was beyond repair .75 years old and it still works :)

Here is an excerpt from my good friend John Gregory from sweeper central in Dunmore Pa.

HENRY DRYFUSS FIRST HOOVER DESIGN WAS THE MODEL 150 INTRODUCED AT THE 1939 WORLDS FAIR AND THE FIRST TO HAVE A BAKELITE MOTOR HOOD.

My Great Grand mom took my grandmother to the worlds fair and that's how they wound up buying this Hoover after seeing it there .

We called that model the 612 here in SA. Its major difference been the location of the switch , Ours been on the side at the bottom.

This is one of my 612's It was used every day by the same family till it was trades in a few months ago for something lighter.

It is still yet to be rebuilt so Its still at my home workshop ad not on display at my showroom

Hoover yours is neat too I love how they made them different for USA with the switch on the handle and everyone else got a step on switch like yours .

My great grandmother always had a staff to help with the house but she had always been the only one allowed to vacuum it was the only job she ever enjoyed as far as housework went . That's the reason
her vacuums still look brand new and that's how I keep every thing I own .
I even wax my Benz's once to twice a week and they are washed every single day .
My vacuums are polished and cleaned before I put them away after each use .

We got the same machine called the 638 Again with the switch underneath.

I am busy restoring this one.

Trying to remould the bumper as a new one is not available.

Underneath the 612 and 638 are just about identical, They use the same motor, Beater brush, even the heavy cast alloy base is the same, Just the Hoods are different and the cord mounts.

Some one else is interested in the 638 in my pics too

Thank you so much I really appreciate the way my family have taken care of all of their vacuums especially their Hoovers . That taught me to respect every thing in my life buy only the best and you will have your items for a lifetime .

I still LOVE the Hoover brand as many collectors hate them and always bash TTi, I thank God they came along and saved one of my beloved vacuum cleaner companies because with out TTi Hoover would be no more . They are a European family that really care about all the brands they own and are doing an amazing job keeping those brands alive and are a very innovative company .

You're welcome, Dan. And you're right on about Hoover. Sure, us collectors may not like the changes to the company TTI has made, or the fact Hoover vacuums are made in China. But Hoover I can honestly say is one of the better made Chinese makes, & reality is these days is you HAVE to manufacture in China to remain competitive in the vacuum marketplace.

The changes

kirbyloverdan's profile picture
TTI has done to Hoover , Royal and now Oreck are nessacary and are geared towards customer demand not collector demand . They could never survive especially with some who would never spend a dime on a new vacuum but rather pick a vacuum from the trash .

So TTis main focus is the typical consumer period .

I know all to well about being busy but in funeral business summer is when we slow down and we get busy in winter/fall. In summer it can be a week or 2 before you get a call, unless in a big city, but in winter or fall one day you are not busy the next day there are 2 or 3 calls.

Wow our businesses are opposite maybe that's why it slows down for me in fall and winter because people are passing away lol nah it's holidays and the cool weather keep people inside except those who must buy a new home during that time . This has been a very good spring and summer seems to keep going in about another month it should start to let up a bit .

After that I have many new toys just waiting for me to open and try out ;)
Plus by November I should have two brand new 100th anniversary Kirby's
to enjoy .

Mike it's hard but I must go on , I just gave the last of her food and treats to a friend I met while bike riding . A dog named Ruby who is a Huricane Katrina survivor will enjoy my beloved Kirby's food that
she left behind :( it was so hard packing her food up but I know another dog will enjoy it so it helps me a bit . All of her toys and stuff are still out around the house I just can't put them away just yet .

Thanks again

Dan,

My deepest condolences on the loss of Kirby. Having gone through this myself in April, I know how much it hurts. She will live forever in your heart and I hope you're able to gather some comfort from that.

Best,

Tom

Kirbyloverdan, get yourself another doggie right away. Don't delay even one day. Go to the shelter and let one steal your heart again. You will never forget Kirby, but a new doggie will find a new way to fill your heart and your life. It is inevitable a new doggie will make you smile and laugh like Kirby did.

Much guys at this time I am going to wait to see how I feel about another dog .
I own a home on 26 acres and I also own an ocean front condo and they do not allow
pets . I go between both places but sleep at my condo every night so a dog right now
won't work for me although I LOVE dogs I know that will have to wait until I see what life
has in store for me .

Dan I could not imagine life without my two furry friends. They are my life. You are in my thoughts and hopefully with time, your sorrow will heal and maybe you will find a new furry friend to help fill the void that is missing within your heart.

My Heart hurts for you

I know how you feel about losing your sweet dog Kirby.I have lost quite a few myself from old age and it never is easy. I have my dogs in my prayers every night and know in my heart they are waiting up in heaven for me. And Kirby is waiting for you too. I will say a special prayer for Kirby.Sometimes I really think our pets are closer to us then our children.I know all of our beloved pets are waiting in heaven for us.I have a sweet little dog that looks a lot like your kirby. She is a Jack Russell Terrier named Biscuit and I have one of my late mom's Dachsunds named Marney and both of those little dogs are a gift from God. They make me laugh even when they are naughty.Your Kirby will always be in your heart and waiting for you in Heaven.Keep your chin up and know you have a lot of nice people on here thinking of you. And you will know when it is time to welcome another little friend into your life and I know you will have a lot of love to give them when it is time.. Dan

Dan, I am sure you have see this, but in case you have not

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Dan, I understand how you feel about Kirby when you say you can't imagine having another dog like her. No dog will ever be able to replace her or make you feel the same way you do about Kirby.

There are 2 special dogs in my life I feel exactly that way about. The first dog was a white female Husky named Sheba. Sheba was about 6 or 7 years old when we rescued her from the pound....my parents got her for me when I was only 3 years old since I loved dogs & Dad didn't like us paying lots of attention to his hunting dog that was his best friend. Sheba was MINE....my responsibility to take care of & love....and she was such a sweet adorable dog with so much love. Mom told me before she passed away that Sheba would tolerate me tugging at her ears without even whining; I personally don't remember that, but she did; so that says something right there. And Sheba would nuzzle me in the morning & wake me up & get on the bed & give me lots of kisses, I have so many good memories of her & how adorable & sweet she was. However, unfortunately, the reason she was given to the pound, we found out, was that she had severe arthritis in her joints, & her veterinary bills & medicine turned out to be extremely expensive. When Sheba was 13 years old, she was in so much pain constantly, we couldn't bear to watch her suffer, so we made the choice as a family to put her down. I cried so much for a good couple of weeks after she died, I always think of her still to this day & I know she is waiting for me in heaven.

The other dog that was special to me was our family dog Sarah, that all 3 of us kids were responsible for. Sarah was a black lab/German shepherd mix, but she looked like a lab, just that she had a white patch on her chest & rough hair on her back like some german shepherd's have. We got her from the pound when she was 4 months old & still very small. But she grew up VERY quickly, & was a very rambunctious dog with tons of energy, & she never tired of roughhousing, swimming in the pond, or throwing balls for her all the time. And she loved camping....she loved exploring in the woods & sometimes she brought back a squirrel or chipmunk as a prize to show us. And a couple of times she got stung by porcupine & got a mouthful of quills, I guess she didn't learn her lesson the first time & was still curious LOL. She was always going into the forest behind our house, & sometimes she would be gone more than a day, she was a very adventurous dog with such a happy spirit & so loving. My favorite memories of Sarah is every day when we came home from school, she would come running to the door, & the I opened the door she would bark & start wriggling all over the place as I petted her, & her tail would get as hard as a baseball bat....it would hit your leg & give you a good gentle thump. And when we watched TV in the rec room in the basement, she would come jumping up & lay on top of our laps at night. And on weekends, she would nudge my Mom & Dad's room door open & jump on their waterbed, start licking them & wake them up real early in the morning, usually around 6 or 7 am. One time Dad outsmarted her, though, because he was determined to sleep in & she wasn't able to get thru the door....we found her with a sad look on her face outside their door, she felt like she had been rejected. We had a good 12 years with her, when Sarah was about 11 years old she started developing arthritis & wasn't as active anymore, her spirit was getting tired. About 8 months later, we found out she had cancer, so we made the decision as a family to put her down & bury her in the backyard. I will always miss her & think of her all the time, I know she is waiting for me up there & I know she will be jumping all over me when I pass away & we meet again.

Dan, whatever you do, hold all those good memories of Kirby in your heart, & try to move on & be happy. Kirby wouldn't want you to be sad, she would want you to move on & make happy memories & have good times in your life, even if another pet never entered your life again. Now, about having a child....just whatever you do, think long & hard about it....remember you will be making a lifelong committment to being a father & loving your son or daughter, & showing them everything there is to know about life. It would feel wonderful to be a parent & have the love of your own flesh & blood child, but it is such a huge committment, just make sure you can give all your energy as a father & be the best father your child deserves. And of course, make sure you find a good woman to be your child's mother....after all, you will have to live with this person being involved with you for the rest of your life as you both strive to be good parents for your child....make sure you are compatible & can live with this woman in your life for a long time to come. I do know though that you will make an excellent father, if you do decide to have a child.

I will keep you & Kirby in my prayers, & will be thinking about you....Rob
