I picked this little beauty up from eBay the other week.
The seller had it listed as £40 'buy it now', I offered £30 and they accepted.
It was local so I collected it too.

For my money I got the main machine and all of the dry use tools / hose.

The pervious owner had owned the machine since new and had it regularly serviced by the local Kirby dealer - this is where the replacement black cord has come from. They fitted it on the last service.

The idea behind buying this machine is that my Sentria2 is only 3 months old and the Legend2 will be ideal for things I don't want to spoil the Sentria2 on... such as vacuuming for an elderly relative ect.

So here we go.... a few before shots - you may recognise them from a previous thread I made... (ignore the classic3 in the background - that's another eBay buy)

Condition isn't TOO bad... just a bit grubby. Don't think it has seen a great deal of use

The tools all unused

So first off away goes the old style paper bag. Not the best in terms of filtration

Then I stripped the outer bag and got my car vacuum out to get the bulk of the filth off it

Then it went in the washer on a wool cycle

I actually washed it twice. Firstly inside out and then again the correct way

After. I thought the machine needed a new brush however there is LOADS of life left in this one yet :)

Then I got the polishing wheels out

Commutator looks in good order too with no wear

Next up I gave the fan a quick wipe over - simply to check for any cracks

Post# 278408 , Reply# 17   4/27/2014 at 16:55 (3,644 days old) by matt8808 (Teesside - North East - UK)

Not too bad really for the age

Next I started polishing the main motor housing.... here you can see the difference as I had only done half of the headlight hood....

Afterwards I gave the whole machine a polish by hand with some Autosol just for some extra sparkle

Prior to restoration the headlight didn't work. I assumed it needed a new bulb but on inspection it had a genuine Kirby bulb in that looked okay... Upon reassembling the machine I refitted the Kirby bulb and hey presto!! Must of been a loose connection....

There was a casualty during the restoration. When peeling the sticker from the top of the bag to unscrew the holder the sticker tore in half. Rather than try to piece it back together and have it looking tatty I've just thrown it away...

ALSO if you've wondering why I haven't refitted the fill tube - there is a small hole in it so I'm going to go pick a new one up from the Kirby dealer in the morning.

The scratches have partly polished out of the hood.

Had I sat a while longer I could of probably removed them completely but the battery on the drill started to run a bit low. Maybe another day I'll go over them again....

And here it is next to my Sentria2 to give you a better idea of condition / shine.

You'd never think one of them is only 3 months old and the other is 25 years!!

Post# 278425 , Reply# 31   4/27/2014 at 17:17 (3,644 days old) by matt8808 (Teesside - North East - UK)

So all I've got to do now is fit a new fill tube and a new style synthetic HEPA bag and its good to go!

I've bench tested it and it runs like a dream. Motor is smooth and bearings are lovely and quiet. Couldn't ask for anything more given what it owes me!

Hi Matt, You've done a great job as I thought you would!

It looks like the fan has been replaced at some point as it would of had a grey lexan fan on it originally. I'm sure the Legend II will serve you well.

I know who to call for help when my Kirbys need re-polishingWink

I bet you can't wait to start work on your Classic III and I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures already!Smile

I'll buy a replacement label then if that's the case, thanks for the heads up! :)

Interesting to know about the fan... Couldn't see any mention of it in the service reports the machine came with. Having said that she said she couldn't find all of the service reports... apparently it was serviced by Kirby every year! God knows why as it clearly hasn't seen a great deal of use.

I'm really pleased with how well the machine has cleaned up, it certainly has a LOT of life left in if yet!

Looks great! The Legend II is one of my favorites, and one of two Kirby cleaners that I have in my collection (the other is a Dual 80). Thanks for posting the photos of your restoration. That buffer wheel looks pretty easy to use, and certainly less intimidating than a bench-buffer.
