when smoking was allowed in cinemas the astrays were attached to the back of the seats gran told me she would clean between the seats with the hoover with a paintbrush in the other hand for cleaning out the astrays fag ends and ash straight onto the carpet all to be gobbled up by the hoover [must have smelt bad ]about once every three months the Hoover man came and serviced both machines.I wonder if they would like it back when the renovations are complete

Theatre Organ?

I loved the story about the iron man's Hoover!:) I wonder, does the theatre have a theatre pipe organ? It is very nicely restored!

Anthony,

Your machine is either a model 912 (1949-67) or 912A (1968-78).

Amazing...

Hi Anthony...
What a Hoover and nice to have the History and family connection :).
Cinema buildings are another area of interest for me and it's great to hear this one is being restored. Sadly our local one where I spent many happy hours of my early childhood (due to both my Mum and Gran working there)is now derelict and will no doubt have a date with the bulldozer at some point :(. It was actually the first Granada cinema to be built but was sold to ABC early on to finance others- including the amazing Granada Tooting.......

Oh the model.....

It's a 912A (The 912 had the rubber large handle grip. Not surprisingly the cable has been replaced at some point as it would have been Grey originally.
I have an unused example rescued from Ebay ages ago- never even had a plug fitted!

had not undergone any restoration when these photos were taken but work has since started acording to the experts there is virtually no damage to the internal decorations which is amazing considering it was converted into a bingo hall in the early 70s .the cinema has somthing called a rake balcony i think that means that the upper floor has no pillars holding it up meaning the audience on the ground floor have an unrestricted view . it was also a venue for live act all the biggies have played her i saw the motown revue back in 1963 Dusty tom jones The Beetles Gerry and the pacemakers it would be easier to say who hasnt been here .When finished its going to be a live acts venue again cant wait oh yes the Hoover is a 68 model i fitted the black cable with the molded plug it came from a Vax wet and dry cleaner .I work for leeds city council the building i work from has a large function room with a thick industrial axminster type carpet that is normaly cleaned with a henry [council use them for everything]that recently blew up scaring the cleaner as we could not get a replacement for a fiwe days i took the comercial to work and let the cleaner use that after she had finished we took what was a new paper bag off and could not beleive what ws in it the bag was two thirds full of grey grit and dust fluff ect years of dirt that had been embeded in the carpet you could actually see the stripes where the Hoover had been i left the Hoover at work for a week even though a new Henry arrived 2 days later the carpet looks as though its been shampooed the colours are brightr and the flattened pile is now all fluffed up the cleaner loves it
