Is it true that in regards to any Royal metal upright built prior to April 1985 - those with the all-rounded fan case - that the nine-blade impeller fan (1608004000, 1620004000) will not fit into that older fan case?
If yes, then that might explain why this 1979 Royal 608 was given the newer angular fan case used on all Royals built from April 1985 through 2001. ~Ben |

John,
The two 9-blade impeller fans do have different thread sizes indeed: Part no. 1608004000 has a hole shaft size of 1/4" (slightly more than 6mm). Part no. 1620004000 has a hole shaft size of 5/16" (8mm). The original 6-blade impeller fan, part no. 1053004000, has a hole shaft size of 7/32" (slightly less than 6mm). All three are screw-type fans. ~Ben |

I've had several of these apart, but never took note of the dimensions. If I remember correctly, and I might not, I don't think the newer ones are threaded at all, just the belt shaft. With enough ambition, and the right tools, you could get any fan to fit any machine. I guess if you had a few donor vacuums laying around, you could cobble an old motor to a new fan, to a new fan case and bell housing.
I'm pretty sure the shaft on the Model 131 was 9/32 (.281") with very fine left hand thread. I don't think the 1030Z had a threaded fan, and I don't remember the belt shaft being left handed. But, my memory is like a steel sieve! |
