Hey all. I have a Westinghouse hand vac from the 50's, and it's pretty awesome. The only issue it has is that the motor is pretty off-balance. It seems like the shaft is bent. When it's running, the shaft wobbles and it makes a horrible rattling noise. It kinda bugs me and I'm worried that the wobbling will wear out the bearings prematurely. Is it possible to balance the motor so the shaft doesn't wobble so badly? Thanks so much!

NO, and simple and easiest way to remedy the problem, new armature/used from a parts machine. there is way motor winding shops can repair bent armature shafts, but the price is so insaned it's worthless to invest for most people unless motors for that machine simply don't exist anymore

since the commutator is the point where the balance causes problems normally, trying to fix the problem would have a higher chance of the segments exploding inside the motor due to causing the segments to get hairline fractures in the adhesive holding the segments together in trying to straighten the motor shaft back out.

I don't know where in the world I'd get a replacement armature, so it's not too big of an issue. I'll just be extra careful in using it from here on out. It seems as though a bent shaft is fairly common in the Westinghouse hand vacs. My friend has almost the exact same model, and he says it has the same problem that mine does, in which the shaft wobbles and it makes that rattling noise. No big deal, I guess it's showing its age! :P

I have an easy way to fix that, but it appears you don't want any of my help.

start something on here, too. No one needs to hear it. And besides, you'd probably charge me $50 and one of my Kirbys for it.
