Found a stray

kirbyloverdan's profile picture
Convertible was real sunny out today, my neighbor sent this to me last year I originally picked this out of her trash when I was a little kid found out it needed a switch fixed it and sold it back to her for $25.00 from then on I made
lots of money as a child fixing and selling trash find Convertibles .
I just can't do that anymore the vacuums in the trash are too disgusting
and dirty . Plus the newest thing to worry about in trash picked vacuums is
the growing bed bug epidemic and that in itself is disgusting !

Hard to tell, but i think...

I like that one. That brown sets off color well. There is one like it but green/brown up for sale in the "super market" area. I have never run across one in person yet. A light blue hood might really rock, what color hoods were they made in that design?

I think i have seen a picture of the light blue hood brown metal combo, might have to find one for my collection someday.
Can a lexan model hood fit a metal base model?
Here's Dustin's machine for sale. There was an orange/brown i've seen that i also like.

Very nice Legend II; I'd love to find one like it. I really think the Legend series were probably the best Kirbys ever made - lighter and less cumbersome than the G-series, plenty of power but not too loud, and can use the modern HEPA bags.

I don't think the G-series is terrible either, but the Legend series is, in my opinion, anyway, easier to maneuver. (Decent versus better, not good versus bad) As for loud, I think my point of comparison is more modern Royal than Kirby. I don't consider any of the Kirbys very loud.

No,

No Kenmore or Sears :(

I would love one of those, I do have the first Electrolux cyclinder cyclonic vacuum which I believe was also sold as a Kenmore. It was a very good cleaner here and was the first bagles vacuum sold in SA, ( dyson only came here in 2005 ) These were also the most expensive vacuum vacuum sold in retail stores in SA at the time.

They were made in Sweden

That Electrolux bagless (reply #23) was sold as a Kenmore and an Eureka version here in North America. I had the Eureka version in the light blue. The Kenmore version was a dark navy blue.

It was a good vacuum, we however did not get a PN on ours but rather a a turbo brush. I bought my mom one when they came out They used it for a long time until I got them a dyson. This might be their one i can't remember I have a few of them.

I often find consumer reports useless, ( well at least the ones here in SA)I am not sure how they get their info sometime's but been in the business I know what is good and what is bad out their and in more than one occasion they have named the best machine as a machine I would not give to my worst enemy.

My friend who is in large appliance repairs says the same thing, They will give a washing machine as the most reliable brand and yet that is the machine he gets in for repair the most.

I must say  Thank you very much for this thread Dan , It has got me so interested in my vacuum collection again. I have been working really hard the past few years, Late nights , early mornings, weekends, Holidays and it finally came time to take it easy, I leave work at 4 pm now and don't work weekends any more, This has freed up so much time and one of the things I have enjoyed working on my collection but now I have enjoyed actually using my collection to clean my home.

I have always used modern vacuums with built in hoses and attachments , They are great for my house with multi flooring , two naughty ( take after their dad ) sons, Cats , dogs ,Rabbits and my wife and me, But most of all I use them because  they are the  fastest way to get my home clean effectively. At work and in my workshop at home i am a vacuum guy & collector but at home everyday I am just a Dad and husband doing my bit to get things done and vacuuming was just a chore to be done.

Now with more time on my hands I am enjoying using my collection to do some cleaning and its bee great fun and reminded me why I collect all of them.

So Thank you for this awesome thread

G

I always wonder how a machine that old ends up never been used, I can understand if its a shop and it got lost in the stock room but I have seen many that belonged to people that were just left in the closet never used.

While i do enjoy restoring machines I would love to find something like that Unused here, But the chances are about 0

Here in the US lots of times when people got married they had wedding showers and sometimes wound up with two or more of the same item as a gift . Then they would just put the extra NIB vacuum or appliance in the attic , basement or closet and because things were made so well they never got to use the item . The people got old passed away and family finds the old NIB items and either throw them away or if your lucky like I was they sell the items .
I have another NIB Eureka I bought many years ago at an estate sale for $12.00 .
I know many of my elder family members used to buy two appliances if they liked it just in case it broke they had a back up . Well most times the appliance never broke and they had another NIB appliance never used stored away .

I have that same dc28, Its a beast, It will drag you accross the carpetwhen the brush roll grips. Unfortunatly someone ( not me ) plugged it into the wrong plug socket in my house, ( 220v is standard in SA but seen as I have lots of USA vacuums I have 110v aswell) some how forcing the plug into a multi plug socket and fried the motor :( Its sitting at my workshop awaiting a new motor.

I like that Hoover, I like the squared off lines of the bag housing.

Funny...

I have that Kenmore on the right in Maroon but have yet to use it. I got it for $5 at an auction. It is nutso heavy, basically tank like. I wonder that vacs like this will be nearly impossible to find faster than any other vac in history. Made for only a year or two, unpopular, and trouble prone seems to be a recipe for rarity. The white elephant factor is a hoot as long as it doesn't cost much and you have the room to store it.

Okay Dan i think we can say Kenmores may be one of your favorite non-favorite brands. They are entertaining and only as far as the nearest Sears, am i right?

Well I received a

kirbyloverdan's profile picture
call from one of the most knowledgeable vacuum guru I know Mr. John Gregory of Sweeper Central himself the other vacuum guru is Mr. Tom Gasko . John Gregory has just informed me that those Kenmore`s were made by TTI/Dirt Devil I kind of thought that by the brush roll . They were made during a time that Sears was having trouble with Panasonic and TTI stepped in and built these machines to provide Sears with a Kenmore very different than they ever had. They were modeled after the Fantom with the rear placement of the motor . The twin chamber bag less dirt cup was a Dirt Devil reaction even the chrome separators' in the dirt cup was straight from the reaction . These machines were supposed to be built as Royals later on but the Dealers didn`t want a machine that resembled a Kenmore so once Sears mended its problems with Panasonic the machine was discontinued .

There is something satisfying about buying new vacuums and storing them away or never using them. We are preserving these models now such that in 20 years time we can look back at them long after they have all burned out or otherwise gone to hoover heaven, and think to ourselves - I wonder how many other people still have an unused one of these?

Folk might think we are mad buying vacs and then never using them, but we are actually preserving these models hopefully to be appreciated by generations to come.

I know how excited I get when I see a NIB old stock machine that was last sold many years back. Its the same with old cars - how often do we see a mint condition car that's 20-30 years old, that we remember from our childhoods, long after they have disappeared from the streets?

Its great that some of us are doing it with items that most people would never think of preserving.

When you think about it, those of us with large collections now, could become the future vac museums. I only wish I'd started collecting properly in my 20's, so that by my 60's I'd have my own museum of vacs dating back at least 40 years.

The only thing you need to have is security of tenure, or your own property in which to store your machines. Vacs we store away now are tomorrow's investments.

When Candy took over Hoover in the UK, they destroyed all of Hoovers old machines and paperwork so far as I know, such that the only old hoover machines now are in the hands of collectors, or in little old lady's lofts, much like the vac in my avatar picture.

Rather than junk it, the family sold it on ebay and I snapped it up as it had very little use. That vac was made in March 1967, so is older than me. I can look at it and reflect on times long gone. I have no right to destroy it, and will do my best to preserve it for another 20 odd years, so that by the time I'm 60, that little Hoover Junior 1346 will be 65 years old and all original.

We are preserving the antiques of tomorrow, and I feel very honoured to own mine. I'm sure you do with yours Dan - look after them because not many other people would.

I am VERY proud of my large either brand new or very mint vacuum collection .
I am very picky with my collection no expense is spared as I only want the
best vacuum possible . I wish I would have thought more about collecting when
I was younger had I had known of the rarity of the older vacuums I would have
purchased many more and kept them sealed in their boxes .
So that's what I am doing now buying select new machines and storing them away
so future collectors can enjoy the past as I have .

Even a common as muck bog standard machine now could be worth a lot in the future - purely because they are so common. No-one nowadays would dream of saving one for the future. Its often these models that die out completely in years to come. In the UK, a good example would be the Dyson DC07 - in its day, every Tom Dick and Harry had one, and they still do now in some form or the other, usually buying them reconditioned. But in 25 years time, how many people will still have a mint DC07? They will all have been scrapped years back, no-one ever thinking that they will be rare one day.

Take the UK Ford Cortina, in the 1960's they were everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Now, 50 years on, they are worth an absolute fortune. Even common 80's cars like the Ford Sierra are so rare now, that they have all but disappeared, and they are already getting highly sought after, especially the early 80's ones.

So don't dismiss saving some models of what you Americans consider Walmart throwaway vacs. Many people will remember them in 2030, but who will still own one? and who will actually own an unused one?

Contrary to what we might think, brand new rare models now, TOL expensive models or unusual models WILL be saved, as people will EXPECT them to be rare in the future, so many more than you might think will survive the test of time.

Steve and Dan , You guys have really hit the nail on the head, Its about preserving things so in the future people can look back and go Wow, I don't have many NIB machines I prefer to use them and try them out but my specialty is taking the discarded and destroyed and bringing them back to their original beauty. Even then I may use them once or twice but they are put on display in my shop on special shelving for all to see.

I love that Hoover Windtunnel . To me it looks like a modern concept one, I would love to own one, One day my Brother when I come and visit we will have to go vacuum shopping and I will need to get a container to send the stuff back to SA

Ugh, that Windtunnel V2 was a disaster... the early versions, anyways, when there was no circuit breaker to prevent the 4 little brushrolls from getting completely stripped out. It was a good idea, but one that needed to go back in the oven to bake a little longer. We repaired sooooooo many of those under warranty at Hoover. Then they made production changes, so you couldn't just replace the brushes -- you had to basically replace the entire base of the cleaner. I had one of the early Windtunnel V2 vacuums, but ended up selling it on eBay. They then renamed it the "Dual V", then the "Savvy" -- early Savvys had the 4 brushes, and they had gotten better by that point. Then they finally wised up and went to a single brushroll. I have one of the single brushroll models, and I love it.

Those Windtunnel V2s were launched around the same time as the Steamvac V2 ... with those paper thin clean water tanks that would leak if you looked at them the wrong way. We would get those tanks in 100-200 at a time, and blow through them in a week or two, between dealer orders and repairs.

The Windtunnel 2 was also not a very good venture for Hoover. They were good cleaners, but that's where it ended. They were way too heavy. The bagless models had the "self cleaning" filter, some models had automatic or electronic height adjustment, too. Lots of problems with circuit boards going bad. The brushroll housings were also made out of a flimsy plastic. If you took the screws out to access the brushroll, or banged it into something by mistake, it would crack and break, and that whole lower housing needed to be replaced.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane! :-)

Ended ones that were the problem I would swap them out and
they seemed to help . My friend Cindy bought the V2 from me way

I believe any vacuum can last a long time if you take good care of it and use it properly, Take the Eureka 4700 series, sold here in SA as the Electrolux petlover, It was a disaster I have never seen so many vacuum come back under warranty in my life, The problems were simple the filtration system was not the best so the filter would clog easily eventually causing motor failure. This was made worse  by the fact that most people had a straight suction canister before buying it, meaning the upright would remove piles of dust from the carpet left behind by the previous vacuum.

They had no sooner been replaced on the market by the much better powerglide than you could walk into any recycling plant and see vast quantity's of them standing their.

That all said I have a few customers ( generally the more mature ones ) who come into my shop to buy new filters and belts every few month perfectly happy with their 6 year old machine, The reason, they look after it.

That is a huge part of vacuum longevity but most people don't care to be gentle when using vacuums nor do they want to maintain a vacuum manufactures are so smart for bringing bag less machines to sell
because they know consumers won't maintain them and they will eventually be thrown out and another one will be purchased hence " planned obsolescence "

I've always

Found it funny how people scratch the crap out of their machines by ramming it into stuff. I personally don't want my furniture or walls banged up hence why my vacuums don't have a scratch on them . But people are so sloppy and trashy esp the wal mart crowd so I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the condition of some machines.

We have a load of Guardsman in the cleaning company I co Own, They are fantastic machines outlasting the sebo's Kachers and all other Euro commercial machines we have. Mine are all orange though, with the longest cord I have ever seen on a vacuum. WE don't et original parts for them here any more ( bags , belts brush strips ) but the generic ones wok well enough, We hardly ever see these in my workshop for repair, They are even maintained by the staff better than the other units, The lady's even change the belts and brush strips them selves, I keep getting asked when am I going to get more. Pity we just don't get them here any more.

... In thread number 271345 I have a true original 1966 1060 starting this combination and the 1968 1010 ending this pairing ... What a rare piece of Hoover convertible history in my own home a collectors dream indeed .

A soft spot for those Gremlin Green WT2's, that color just pops. Bought two, one for $5 that seems to be such a basket case i think it will be for parts only. The second cost about the same but only has the issue where it won't stand upright on it's own.
Those Eureka Boss vacs are abundant and sell for nothing considering how great they work. I can't pass them up even though they are a bit boring to my eye. I have a Sanitaire blue hooded version that i upgraded with a metal VG II brush roll i had on hand. I bought the machine for $10, cleaned it up, swapped in the brush roll as mentioned and of course a new belt and F&G bag. My mothers cleaning help makes a bee-line for it when she shows up.
I think i have 2 Eureka's just like the Boss you pictured waiting for spa treatment and then likely donation to a friend in need. I may have a little fun and put a Sanitaire red bag that i have laying around on one of them.

I wouldn't say you have to many vacuums, come on 400+ thats not even two different ones a day for a year, No you need more, Many more, If the Mercs can still get into the garage's then you have to few

Lover I sure have a lot of Hoovers 😁

This is the last Hoover my Grandmother had until she passed away .
Hoover Run about U4258-930 she asked me not to put tool caddy or tools on
machine because she used her green constellation for tool cleaning .
She always loved and upright for carpets and canister for everything else .

Love that Hoover, I have a hard bagged blue version.

On that new Simplicity Model, I am a huge fan of both poly toothed and poly V belts, due to the fact that they do not streatch and so give the same cleaning performance continuously, Unlike rubber made normal elastic belts that loose there elasticity quickly and need to be replaced every few months to maintain proper cleaning.

The Poly belts can deteriorate over time but it takes years, Most will last 10 to 20 years with ease.

at a thrift store for a 10 spot. I haven't prepared it for use yet however so no one would confuse which was which, mine is definetly on the scuffy dirty side.
I would see them periodically in Craigs but too far and or too much. Finally the price was right and i bought one.
What other colors did these come in Dan?

Post# 274450 , Reply# 135   4/1/2014 at 18:39 (3,648 days old) by HooverCelebrity (Germany)

The burgundy U3729 was one of the assembly lines I was shown the first time I visited the Hoover HQ in N Canton, in 1993, when I was 10. That and the U4617 Elite... So that model has always had a special place in my mind. I'd love to have one of that model some day, but for the time being I have the black U3745 variable-speed model to keep me occupied until a U3729 comes my way. :-)

They are great machines... Early models had the Quadraflex Agitator, later models had the Elite style agitator. They came in 4 colors, I believe...

Model U3721 was 'Ultra Blue Deep', U3729 was 'Crimson'...

Post# 274451 , Reply# 136   4/1/2014 at 18:40 (3,648 days old) by HooverCelebrity (Germany)

The U3737 was 'Forest Green', and the U3745 was 'Black'. Although I feel like I've seen a green model with the variable speed... Not sure what that model would have been, perhaps a promotional model for a specific retailer.

Dan Bosch and Siemens have a 50/50 partnership in Home appliances from cooking to cleaning.

I know on our market we often get vacuums that look similar but are sold to different retailers so they don't compete on models

That's a pity they are often overlooked at in favor of Miele here to and its to bad because they make some pretty good bagged vacuums much better than anything I have seen out of Miele lately.

The problem is like Toyota people buy Miele here in SA because of what they used to be and when they break prematurely they just blame the maid for abusing it not realizing that the quality has dropped.

That Royal Protégé upright in reply #121, I remember seeing one of these & remember from the rating plate it was made in South Korea. I would bet good money that cleaner was made by Daewoo for TTI. Another possibility, although highly unlikely, is it could have been outsourced to Sanyo, before the Panasonic takeover.

By the way, Dan, here is a Hoover you may want to consider adding to your collection....the Hoover Air Pro upright, made to compete with the Dyson Ball. I bought one last year & love it! Only bad thing I can say about it is I wish it had a upholstery tool included, & the turbo brush is not that great....takes very little to stop the brushes & make it ineffective, despite the great suction & airflow this cleaner has. If you do buy it, use the turbo brush that came with your Windtunnel Anniversary canister....I have one of those & it works much better. Here is a link below for you to the Hoover website.

I totally agree with you, The hose on my one is just to short. I dont know what it is with European vacuum company's and short hoses. I know the houses there are generally smaller than in the USA and South Africa but even in a small house a long hose is great as it means less need to  pull the machine around.

You don't want to have to tug the vacuum behind you every five minutes just to vacuum a small room.

I think this is just why I have always preferred uprights, why drag something behind you and then still push a floor tool infront of you when you can just push the upright instead.

I have no

Idea why any manufacturer of canister vacuums would sell a machine with a short hose .
That's why I love Tacony Aerus and many of the other D2D vacuums here in the US all have long hoses Tacony being the longest hoses .

I go through phases between canisters and uprights .

I used to have the Aerus Little Lux. Got it for free from the local vac shop....someone brought it in claiming it was broken when there was nothing wrong with it. Great little hand vacuum, did a wonderful job on pet hair! The only reason I got rid of it was I disliked emptying the shake-out bag, made my allergies act up too much. Too bad they don't make paper bags for it.

Wide areas of the floor plus I have a Mercedes SUV so it gets the cargo area better that way .
Your have to use the crevice tool for all the areas the Little lux is too large to get to .

Sorry for the late reply. I find Bosch cylinder vacs to be made of thinner plastics than Miele and in the UK all of them come with friction fit hoses, tools, tubes and floor heads.

In Germany Bosch are now offering certain vacuums with similar locks that SEBO and Miele have always offered but not as yet in every other European market - also Bosch don't stock dusting brushes with a lot of their cylinder/canister vacs.

I love,

That Avanti upright! Any more info or pictures on that?

A long while of a time ago, some neighbors had a Farrington in their carport. It was faded to a burnt Orange and coated in leaves, etc. Plus missing the bag cover to boot! Of course, being I had never seen nor heard of a Farrington, and, of-course, asked if 'they had any use of it'.they said it was their Son's or something. They're a nice elderly couple, I did, however, got a 12 Amp Elite from them some time ago,a real HOOVER of a cleaner.never knew what became of the Farrington.

The Avantis motor looks identical to an Oreck when they first came out the headlight used to blind you while vacuuming . Later models like mine they added a sticker in the inside of lens to focus the light forward and at carpet . The bag hole is tiny and so is the handle dirt tube so airflow is restricted and clogs easily .
Steel brush roll with replaceable brush strips . Very fragile plastic I don't think it would hold up I don't use mine it's an unused vacuum .

Where on earth would you find bags, belts, etc.for this model? I'm guessing the company has gone out of business?
