When using my Royal 2025 on carpet, whether it's a low carpet or plush, the brush will stop altogether, unless I raise the nozzle to where it's not on the floor.

I have a new belt and brushroll in it, and the brushroll is set to the highest setting using the hexagon ends. when I lower the vac to the point that the adjuster on the cover pulls in, the brush will stop altogether, although the motor will still spin. my other Royal upright doesn't have this problem, and it's much older.

Any advice?

Spindle Issue

Are the spindle shaft's thread's stripped?

Sounds like a spindle shaft issue to me too. I'd expect some issues with the fan in that case though.

Why don't you call Royal at 1-800-321-1134 and ask them about why the "Au-Toe-Matic" control drops down unfavorably? They will give you a remedy or two.

The shaft spins fine, it's the belt and brush that will stop. the spindle is not loose, and the fan feels solid.

I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. I do prefer the style with the knob adjust, but this isn't a bad design really.

Defies Physics

Either the belt is stretched (can you install it easily without a tool?), there's a mystery lubricant on the shaft, or gremlins are at their mischief.

You should smell rubber burning, but you never mentioned that. It basically has to be the belt.

it's a brand new belt, and yes if I let the brush stop for too long, it does stink. I can't stop the brush with my hand (yes I tried to!)

This could be your problem.....

tipInstallation Tip: There is an arrow on the rug plate as well as an arrow on the brushroll. When installing the brushroll, be sure to align the two arrows.

Maintenance Tip: Most of the brushrolls below have numbers on the endcaps. With a new brushroll, the number 1 on both end caps should face out. As the bristles wear down with use, you should position the brushroll with the next highest number facing out. Doing this will make the bristles stick out further past the rug plate.

In your first post you said you had the brush roll at the highest setting, if they are numbers and your brushroll is new it should have #1 facing out and the two arrows on the rug plate and brush roll should point in the same direction.

Hope this helps,

PR-21

Great Advice

Really good points PR. I can hardly imagine the pressure it would take to stop that brush roll. I know you can't stop it by hand... not easily! Anyway, might there be debris in the bottom of the brushroll's seats, keeping it sticking out too far?

My end caps have no numbers, in fact it has only 2 positions, because the hex ends have protrusions that let it go in only 2 ways, high and low. it's set with the bristles at their highest. Also, no dirt or debris keeping it from seating either.

The arrows are also lined up too, and the belt is installed correctly. (if you put the belt on backwards, it slips off)

Nozzle Guard Distorted

ornery's profile picture
Could the Nozzle Guard be puckered in the middle, rubbing against the bottom of the belt?

the Nozzle guard is fine, when the nozzle is off the floor, it spins fine with no sound of friction or wear. Starting to wonder if the height adjustment is messed up? still haven't had time to call Royal about it.

Well, the belt seems to have worn out a bit early, I put this belt on a few months ago and haven't used the vac a whole lot, but I guess it's stretched out and gotten loose. I still don't like the new height adjuster as opposed to the screw adjust ones on the older Royals.

Since your belt is worn try another new one.Yes,like the dial nozzle height adjustment over the Royal toe pedal one.Whats bad about the toe pedal--it can change even if you bump the machine softly into something -or even pick it up and put the vacuum back down on the floor. When I buy Royal,Kirby,Sanitaire belts-I buy several each at one time-sometimes new ones are bad.Its rare-but can happen.And--how long have the belts been sitting at that vac store?Like tires they can go stale and lose "stretch"
