I found a Lux model E at a vac shop here. He said he would take $5 for it. I plugged it in and it ran just fine. Nice and quiet machine. There is no hose or attachments. Will these be hard to find? Will my super j hose work on it? Did the E come with flip-over tool or two separate tools? I think I'll go get it tomorrow.

My very fine dentist, Linda Gentry, gave me the rearview mirror.

Congrats on the find. The super j hose will not work because of the electrical connectors. You can find a modern hose for it on Hescos for a very good price. If you want I can get you a model number and/or the URL for it if you can't find it easily.

The model E did come with a flip over floor tool and a combo duster for attachments. A flip over floor tool should be easy enough to find, but an orignal model e type could be a bit harder.

Good luck!

Thanks lux 1521. I went on Hesco's site and found the Lux parts page. They have an "aqua" colored hose to fit it. Would this be the color needed to match my E? I also found a beige colored one on e-bay. The machine itself is blue hammertone. I want it to look nice, but I know it will be hard to find everything original. Plus I am going to use it not just look at it. Did this machine have a filter of any kind on it? Will it be hard to disassemble to clean the motor? The cord is original, but the plug has been replaced. Everything else looks really nice. I'm excited about getting it. Thanks for your help.

PS If anyone out there has the hose and attachments I need to match the machine, I would be interested in buying them. Just email me with a price. Oh yeah, I'll post a picture when I get the machine.

Have a great day,
Tim

The Lux E

Had a filter in the rear housing after the motor. It was square, and you loosened the thumbscrew in the blower port to get to it. The rear cover comes off and that's where the filter goes. Where in Georgia are you from??? Rick, Snellville...30 miles east of Atlanta.

Tim, could you give us the web-site address for Hesco? Thanks a lot. Terry

Lux Model E

Hello I have an electrolux Model E no the hose from the Super J will not fit but you can buy one really cheap on ebay.com this also came with the flip over tool.

Post# 26090 , Reply# 9   12/6/2007 at 15:59 (5,956 days old) by charles~richard ()

After the four-ply bags came out, Electrolux no longer recommended using the filters in the rear of the LX, E and AE. In fact with the Model F and thereafter, the rear filter was completely discontinued, and on the earlier models salesmen would remove them from their customers' machines.

All the filter does is block air flow, thus reducing suction and causing the motor to heat up. It does somewhat soften the sound of the machine, but at the expense of efficiency.

I would suggest you open the rear cover of your E, if there is a filter in there, take it out and discard it.

that's good info to know because the rear filter pad on my model 89 isn't pretty. I'll have to go check the 88

Yes, it's really better to remove those filters. Especially if they are really clogged up. (btw of what you see on the filter is carbon brush residue -- note how black and oily the dirt is. It's not household dust.)

The web address your looking for is in the link below. Use the item number box. The number your looking for is EL-416. It is for the plastic hose. The woven ones have been discontinued for quite a long time and I don't think they're very good for daily use anyway. If you want links/item #s for more new parts, I would be glad to help.

The motor should be quite easy to work on, especialy if it has the brass sleeve bearing on the commutator end. If you think you might forget how it is put together, take pictures as you take it apart and you can refer to them later. I think it can also build confidence when you can see that it looks right when your done.

Model Automatic E

I just bought this thing this morning. I found it on a table outside the Mustard Seed in town, it had been left as a donation, and hadn't made it into the store. When I got an attendants attention, she said it didn't need to be processed, and just go plug it in and see if it worked. I did, and it hasn't much suction at the moment. Another woman slapped a $10.00 price sticker on it. It's a beautiful little machine, obviously the wrong hose for it, but is it the correct floor tool?

Post# 26163 , Reply# 15   12/7/2007 at 12:08 (5,956 days old) by lux1521 ()

Wrong floor tool you got there. That goes with a XXX or LX. The machine itself looks rather nice, although I think AE and AF models look strange with the cord halo. At $10 it's a good find.

Thank you lux1521, I thought it was older than the machine, or at least not correct. I like the design of it, and even though the hose is way too new, it has an unbroken hand grip.

Actually It may be the correct rug nozzle with it. Given that its in Florida and you have alot of Canadian Snow Birds down there it may be one that was brought down with them. When they sold the AE in Canada it came with the Canadian parts instead of the dual brushes. If it is a Canadian sold machine it should have either a sticker or remenants of one on the bottom saying Warranteed by Electrolux (Canada) Limited. Incidentally the AE was sold here on a limited basis (as was the LX) as an experiment to see how the automatic bag controll and paper bags would go over in our market before the models 83-86-88 went into production.

Alan,
That looks just like the E I'm getting. You are lucky that you are getting tools and a hose. I wish I was. I can't wait to get it and use it. It is so lightweight and quiet. I'm hoping I won't be disappointed with the suction since I am used to a Super J and a Diamond J. I have always wanted an E or a XXX. I just think they are cool machines.
Charles, do you have a complete original restored E? What is your favorite Lux model? Is it the E?
Tim

Complete / Original Model E Photos

(my favorite model, hands-down)

Well, I was gonna snap a couple of photos and before you could say REVERSIBLE TOOL, I had done a whole photo shoot. Stay tuned...

I found archive pictures, and Doug's site pictures, whatever is happening with my computer, not every picture appeared. But the Es and AEs did, and the tool as Doug mentioned. I had assumed the owner had retained an early tool for some reason until I saw pictures. I like the looks of mine, and I still like the reversable one everybody remembers more. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I left the store, and I wasn't going to leave it.

Doug, I didn't find any stickers on it, but I'm sure it's what you suspect it could be. It also has a chrome halo, a newer Electrolux cord, and minimal scarring. The inside is clean as a pin, and the stabilizer is somewhat gouged on the front bottom. And very light rust. It should come back with a good cleanup.

If there are blank spaces on my Electrolux page it means I dont have that particular machine yet. I dug out the Canadian AE instruction manual so I thought you all might like to see what it came with in Canada.

Thanks for clearing up that mystery Doug

Also what I have been getting were blank outlines with tiny little boxed x in each upper left corner. At least now I do know why some entries were completely blank. Thanks for that great photo from the E book too.

Alan I can't quite see in your picture above but is their blue trim on the rug nozzle that matches the vacuum? Would that be a clue that it was part of the set for that model?

Post# 26308 , Reply# 25   12/8/2007 at 17:02 (5,954 days old) by charles~richard ()

Alan, I meant to tell you, your "Mustard Seed" AE is a really nice find! It still has the original wheels and switch; these have frequently been replaced with white or tan. Ugleeee!

Be very careful with the wheels- don't ever drop the machine on the floor, or even sit it down hard -- not even from a distance of a couple inches. The plastic they are made of is very brittle and easily broken. Once you break one, try finding a replacement!

Also, if you want to make it "look" more correct, go to the hardware store and buy a black vacuum cleaner extension cord. All the big garden/hardware stores out here carry them, sometimes in black or white. It will set off the look of the machine. Then of course you'll need to find a functional original hose....... good luck on that!

Speaking of hoses, I have found a very nice and "aesthetically correct" replacement -- the silver hoses from upright Royals! The models in the early to mid 1980s came with very durable coiled vinyl hoses, silver in color, that is a nearly exact match to the silver color of the trim on the E and AE machines. Here, have a look at a Model E that I put together and "gifted" to a friend.

The cord you see there, btw, is the "hardware store" vacuum cleaner cord I mentioned. The two 'combo' attachments are from a turquoise Model L, and I included a polisher for my friend because her house has all hardwood floors, AND her mom [now deceased] had a Model E with a polisher when she was a little girl! That, in fact, was the reason for the gift -- she came over one day when I happened to have a Model E sitting out and she just squealed with glee! She said her mother had had that very model when she was a little girl. When I saw how delighted she was to see it, I knew I just had to give her one.

So I fixed this one all up, put it in a box, wrapped with gift wrap and a big ribbon, and took it over to her. She she opened it, she literally just started bawling.

She looked at me, tears running down her face, and said, "You just have NO IDEA what this means to me. I had a very strong connection with my mother through the vacuum because it was my special job to use it every week from the day she bought it. I clearly remember when the Electrolux man came to the house to demonstrate it. I was so enthralled with it that my mama decided to buy it, telling me, 'Since you like this machine so much, it will be your chore to operate it.' I was very happy to do so! Especially when I got to use that really KEEN Polisher!! I just would never have imagined I could ever find another one like it."

Then more crying, a huge hug, and then set immediately set-to using it!

A strange and eerie note: In the first photo of my friend below, the lady in the large framed portrait on the wall is ... her mother!!

Using the polisher -- you should have heard the shriek of delight she let out when she started the vacuum cleaner and that polisher began making its distinctive hissing, warbling sound!!

Pete, the trim on the floor tool is blue. That was a clue to me also about its sales origin. Charles, the stories are always interesting. Your friend is just glowing with her new toy. What a gift! I'll be shopping for a polisher now! That whole prize package is just stunning, the hose and cord set it off so well, too. At the moment, I'm pleased with the cord on mine, that has Electrolux embossed on each side of the plug, it complements the grey handle and rocker switch, and the brightwork. Ha-maybe the Electrolux/Aerus dealer could have an appropriate hose. ? If I go vacuum hunting in Vero Beach Monday, I might try the shop on 21st street. I wish Mom's Model L with the cord reel were still here. She Goodwilled it when my brother bought her the Eureka Mighty Mite Boss! Still have that, it's good, but not an Electrolux.

My attempt at recreating the Lux ad.

This is my AE that I rebuilt and repainted.....Yeah, It's blurry, I must of been plastered at the time. LOL If some one could post the original magazine ad, that would be fun!

Again, note the emphasis on light weight and two-attachment cleaning.
