When I turn on the 1205, it makes a "clicking" noise during startup.

What could be the problem? Bad switch?

Do you get the click when unplugged also?

No it only does that "rumble" when I turn the vacuum on; but it starts to slow down like the motor is about to quit working

Things to check

I rebuild 1205 motors all the time it could be a bad connection at the cord winder and the connector block inside the can also worn brushes.

click

at start could be some segments of the armature have been lost.It could account the motor sounding like it wants to stop. If I was to hear the motor I could better tell you what it was. Not uncommon for an older 1205.ANywhere from 3-4 segments could be lost and still run. The carbon brushes will eventually go bad.

Break it down

If the armiture is bad I have many 1205 motors rebuilt with new brushes and bearings for sale in my eBay store. The 1205 is a simple vacuum to work on.

I took apart the motor & it seems to be in good shape; other than there is a lot of carbon brush dust

No signs of rust or bad bearings

Is the cord reel "grommet" part still available?

btw, I gave this early 1205 a spa treatment; I will re-assemble it tomorrow

I reassembled the 1205 & still NO suction!  Could the fan nut be loose?

have you cleaned the cord winder wiper contacts?

Sounds like the fans came loose, even though I tightened the fan nut.  Motor sounds OK, other than the fan came loose/worn out in the center?  Maybe its time for rebuild?
