Here's a picture I took today of my 1987 Stark Deluxe 5000NA (Royal 889) upright.

Serial no.: L87B001599 (November 1987)

I'm wondering what any of you Royal experts could say about this rare machine? Such as, for instance, was there a black trim version of the No. 303 attachment set back in 1988?

I've never seen Royal attachments in black, only red, burgandy, 2 shades of blue, and 2 shades of gray. The set for yours would probably have been blue or gray.

Hi Jeff,

It was most likely in light gray for this one. I researched that the "NA" suffix that was part of such model numbers as mine and the 880NA meant "no attachments."

However, there used to be black tools for the very old Royals made in the 1930s and 1940s.

Royal/Electro-Hygiene Attachments

Yes, the attachment set for your Stark would have been gray, but I'm thinking dark gray, as that's the color of the set we got with my wife's 886 Royal which we bought brand new on 2/7/1994. The Royal was $349.95, and the attachment set # 305 was $59.95, and by that time they had switched from curved to straight wands and had put a curved handle on the hose and also a curved elbow on the floor brush.
As for black tools with the Royals and Electro-Hygienes of the 30's and 40's, they were, kind of. Here are some pics to illustrate that. First pic is a set for the first Electro-Hygiene, model 80. The hose, wand, crevice tool, small bag, small handle, and sprayer top were all black, and upholstery nozzle is polished aluminum with a black slider. Royal attachments of that time would have been similar. The set for the next model, 94, would have been the same with a different small bag and the addition of a cord with an inline switch, since the 94 now had the switch in the handle.
Next are models 153 and 189 Royal uprights with attachments and 157 hand vac. Hose is gray with white stripes and black attachment end, wands and crevice tool are black, upholstery nozzle and tops of the floor brush and dust brush are polished aluminum with gray brush holder and black bumper. Next is closeup of floor and dust brushes, upholstery nozzle, and sprayer to show this a little better. And finally, my Electro-Hygiene 2-230 with attachments. Hose is blue with white stripes, dust brush and upholstery nozzle are blue, wands (missing) would have been chrome with black ends, floor brush (missing) would have most likely been painted to match the other attachments, and crevice tool (missing) would have been gray. But when I said in the earlier post that they never had black attachments, I was referring to later versions from late 50's on. Hope this is helpful.
Jeff
