I have never heard much about Universal Vacs. Did they make their own? How long were they around? What styles did they make?

A good place to start would be to use the search boxes on the top right of the screen. Vacuumland member "CreviceTool" has posted many informative threads on Universal appliances - the custom google search on all forums might be best as his threads cover other appliances apart from vacuums and are very well worth reading
