Model number from Richard, as he seemed clued up on it. I have no idea tbh!

Thanks to the bad influence of the facebook group, I did this...

TBH it had a ridiculous BIN, and I fancied a project so grabbed it.

It arrived today!

I had a look at the extending pole, and the bashed up end was sorted by repeatedly ramming an old Henry metal pole up it. However the telescopic mechanism doesnt work well. Was jammed at first, popped the cap off, and loosened the mechanism with a screwdriver and blasted it clean with brake cleaner. It now moves, but will only latch one way. Put any pressure on it as per normal use and it moved to closed. Not sure of a way round it other than a bojack 35mm extending pole from ebay...

And I had a look at this, since it's easily the worse floor tool I've ever seen on anything!

All awaiting washing, and for me to get some money to buy:

Service Box

Will unlease some ebay-fu over the weekend!

Hope you enjoyed. Tempted to email the seller asking why they failed to say it had been left out in the rain, or the damage but for £9 it would be a bit silly of me!

You seem to be very busy there with that, I wouldn't be able to do that! How heavy did you find it when it was together?

Not too bad, on par with my S5 tbh, lighter than a DCO4

I'll do proper comparisons with scales and everything when its back together if you want!

That would be great if you could. I was thinking of buying a similar Miele but apparently they are heavy but if they are lighter than a DC04 then I can guess. Thanks.

Did some washing up tonight

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

The chassis and top chasis were to big, so will do those in the shower tomorrow. Gave them a blast with the pressure washer whilst cleaninga car this afternoon, so should be a bit easier!

From Miele S300i

I then got bored so had a look at the top cover, which had dried really quickly

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

Lets make shiny. Sadly this machine has seen some things, and the damage will never comeout but it'll pass the 5 feet test!

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

I then gave the motor a good clean with some brake cleaner, and gave the top bearing a good squirt of plusgas. Particular attention was paid to the electrics too with the brake cleaner.

From Miele S300i

From Miele S300i

Gave all the internal plugs and sockets a good clean with the brake cleaner too, and squirted some fluff out of the speed control, so *hopefully* that will not fully work.

Also re-tensioned the cord reel a bit, and worked plusgas into the spring. Should take your foot off now!

More soon!

TBH I find ti easier to componentise stuff and clean it than trying to clean it all together. Plus I'd never get the smell of carbon dust out if I didnt!

How much length is left on the carbon motor brushes? I usually always check this, as an indication how much longer the motor has left, and indeed, how much time its been run for.

Post# 262875 , Reply# 11   1/11/2014 at 17:28 (3,728 days old) by beko1987 (Stokenchurch, United Kingdom)

I'd say just below half left on the carbons. Flushed some grit out of the housings too so hope that helps!

I reckon it's had that same charcoal filter in it since new though, so heavy load on the motor for the past few years at least.

Post# 262893 , Reply# 12   1/11/2014 at 17:54 (3,728 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

There's no doubt that its had a hard life, and judging by the state of that floor tool, where the metal has been worn into holes - it could have been used on hard floors with the brushes up, or the brushes had simply worn out. It may have even been used for commercial use.

Just shows how much punishment a Miele motor can take - imagine a Dyson motor put through what that Miele has been through?

Miele Vacuums are probably very popular as office Vacuums judging by how quiet they are. I am fascinated by the noise as you can hear the air wooshing through the hose & pipesm rather than motor noise.

I think the most common office vacs are Henrys, as they are cheaper than Miele's and are just as quiet. You can also get spares for Henry cheaply, such as bags, hoses and floorheads - unlike Miele where they will cost a fortune.

It's a shame really Henry's are now notorious for the Eco power boost button breaking.

So I've heard. Ive got an autosave Henry myself, and although its OK at the moment, I am concerned that the autosave circuit will inevitably go at some point and will need to be bypassed. Even Henry has had quality compromised lately it seems. Old Henrys were very reliable, and many went on for years even in commercial settings. Switches it seems are its weakest point now, whereas in old times the hose cuff was the usual area where they failed first, and many Henrys Ive used had black gaffer tape wrapped round the hose cuff.

Post# 262905 , Reply# 19   1/11/2014 at 18:29 (3,728 days old) by hi-loswitch98 ()

Well the hose went on my 1999 Henry a few months ago, managed to fix it though which saved money. I do feel Numatic are cheapening things, I doubt the parking slot is going to last very long in a Commercial Setting, either.

Post# 262906 , Reply# 20   1/11/2014 at 18:37 (3,728 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

On the Miele theme again - I think they have lowered quality too compared to Miele's of old. I see a fair few modern Miele's on EBay for reasons like the lid wont stay closed, or they wont come on - more so with the S6 models. Flimsy lids and poor quality power dials are also complained about. Numerous S7 uprights have also been for spares or repair due to the overheat circuit cutting in and not resetting itself again, so rendering the vac unusable. S7's have also been guilty of plastics breaking off the bases and wheels falling off. I do think the S7 is far too fragile to stand up to hard use.

Lets see how long before the new S8 cylinder takes for them to appear for spares or repairs on Ebay. One thing is for sure - modern Miele's are cheaper to buy now, but they wont last 20 years that they are supposed to be tested for.

Post# 262966 , Reply# 21   1/12/2014 at 04:01 (3,728 days old) by hi-loswitch98 ()

The reason why there are many Mieles on eBay is because owners don't use genuine bags, which is advised by Miele to do so. They end warping the sides of the bag door & ruining the machine completely eventually.

The best "old" style Miele I had was the black S571. Beautiful vacuum that. Well made, but by god, heavy to pull along and carry. I don't miss the heavy weight. But, utterly simple to use and of course a pleasure to vacuum with.

The S300 range is just a little lighter but not very different to the S500 range - both use the smaller FJM dust bag. The only problem my S381 had was that the tool door pinged off one day but it is easy to fix.

In 2004 there was an XXL model, the S812 which used the same kind of body style but slightly taller to accomodate the bigger GN series bag.

I won't use my clear Miele because I don't want it to get dirty inside considering it was put together with one safety screw that won't come out easy. It was only ever intended as a display piece to show how they are out together and sealed. They cost the dealer over here $175.75 and weren't to be sold, most yellowed if left in sunlight tho. Mine looks new, it was NIB when I got it.

S512 above, which is the lightest (S4241 and S5210 both have over half full bags, and the S512 a brand new empty one but doubt that'll make much odds.)

Put mums tools on the S512 and ran it around. Even on 300w it was still quite powerful, could hear airflow from the brush. On full power it was almost un moveable!

turned it down to 700w again and did downstairs, and it's fully excellent once again! Just need to wait for stuff to turn up now, and buy the last few bits.

20 years, dunno about that! This one lasted probably 12-14 years, and whilst it wasnt dead, it wouldnt have been long. Abuse definatly does come into it though.

I haven't got space to keep it sadly, and as good as it is it doesn't do anything for me like a late 80s machine would.

At the moment money is more important, a sentiment shared I imagine by many here. One day maybe, but for now I'm enjoying these little projects and hoping to benefit from them!
