Hi everyone! My beloved "Luxy" that I vacuum with everyday was loosing power a few days ago. Thank goodness I just got a Hoover Convertible for free! So, I had something to vacuum my house with! Haha! Here's some pictures of her motor all apart. The motor was cleaned really good, the bushings were oiled, and the commutator was cleaned and polished. She runs spectacular now!!! I can't wait to vacuum later!!! Yay for "Luxy"!!!! :) -Michelle

Someone had gotten into it before and chewed up the terminals. My husband had to straighten them back out.

The motor gradually started slowing down. We took it apart and the lube in the bushings were gummy, almost like a glue. Basically, cleaned the bushings and lubed it. Now it runs like a champ!!!

I am sure glad you saved the Electrolux Luxy! Thats the kind of vacuum worth saving. I had a experience like that with my Hoover Deluxe Convertible. It needed carbons and I lubricated the motor. She's all working good now.

Terminal board failure was common in the 1205 model. Factory suggested repair was a kit bypassing board and directly connecting motor wires to cord winder. Detailed instructions were provided with each kit. Special replacement/connecting wires were provided. Male terminals in kit were to be installed onto cord winder contact strips. Contact tabs that originally slid onto now failed terminal board were to be removed (leaving the half of strips not touching terminal board).
As Mr. Bill Shier, then Electrolux National Service Manager and an engineer, explained it to me the failures resulted because of eventual arcing at the terminal/cordwinder connection. The spring loaded connectors started to pit which in turn caused an increase in heat at the contact point. This heat in turn caused the plastic body of the terminal to melt progressively away from the tabs eventually causing a disconnect (failure). Part of the service procedure was to also drill a drain hole in the bottom of the cord winder cover. This was to facilitate any condensation occurring to escape, although in my experience I never saw that as a problem.
Hope this helps in understanding what your 1205 was dealing with. John McKee, (then) Electrolux National Training Supervisor

Correction to my previous post: the drain hole should be in the plastic motor shroud not the cord winder cover as I erroneously stated. Sorry for any confusion.

drain holes

Should also have hole in metal body between rear wheels. Was added during 1205 production.Early 1205 can have - no drain hole,6 screws on front door cover, smooth paint,no dust brush clip, metal handle, round bag lock out button, serial no on bottom of cordwinder, etc.

Thank you very much for all of the wonderful information!!! I especially like your last thread post about old and newer differences in the 1205's! I have two 1205's. The one in this thread "Luxy", my husband bought for me because I loved the one my mom had. Just a month ago, my dad came for Christmas and gave me my mom's 1205, that her mom bought brand new. My mom has recently passed away, and has great sentimental value to me! His name is "Lux" and he is in dire need of restoration, which I will be doing here in the near future! I did talk with my grandma a week or so back and she was guessing she got it in 1966, but I know that they didn't come out with the 1205's until 1968, so I'm figuring that she got him the first year they came out with them!!! I do have a thread on "Lux", if you wanted to see pictures of him. What's sad is that my parents and family for the most part DO NOT care about anything vintage!!! When I just went up to my parents' farm in rural Minnesota, I found "Lux" in the garbage heap outside exposed to all the elements!!! I told my father that that isn't an option, so my dad stuck "Lux" back in the garage until he could bring him down to me. If you check out that thread and see his terrible condition; the kicker is he still runs great!!! Actually, in his current condition, runs way better than "Luxy"!!! Go figure! I do have a question though, we totally rebuilt "Luxy" and she runs great now, but we did notice that her blow hole air isn't nearly as strong as "Lux". What would cause that and how do I fix it??? Thanks again! :) -Michelle

To Luxy 1205

Hi Michelle, This is Nathan, Electrolux-Dude. A possible cause for weaker air flow might be that "Luxy" might have a model G motor. Early 1205's had a model G motor in them. Newer 1205's from I think about 1970-1974 had bigger motors in them. Hence, this might be why Luxy's airflow might not be as strong. If you should need any tips on servicing/rebuilding Lux's I'm an expert at it and will be glad to be of assistance! My email is: thetrain53@gmail.com. Have a good day!
