Ooh that looks lovely just tell your parents that you'll not get any more after this and you could always bribe them!!

This all depends on a few things here. But at the risk of being a bad influence I'll go ahead and say it. If you have your own money and a means of getting the machine home on your own I'd just do it and sneak it into the house. Let it sit around inconspicuously for a while before using it when they're home so it looks familiar and not new. Now however if you're depending on them for money that's different. The best bet if you really do want it bad, let go of something you don't care as much for. Just my suggestions.

Hi jord123.

caligula's profile picture

I know I'm going to sound like the 63 year old curmudgeon that I am, and probably get a lot of flack for what I'm about to say. However, I didn't buy a single vacuum cleaner in my collection till I could pay for it myself. Ask my family to get me one? I never thought of it. I would not be that cheeky! But once I started working, I saved up and bought my favorite Electrolux. The model LX (which was 15 years old and in a used vacuum shop). The joy of buying your own vacuum cleaners is wonderful.

Hi jord123.

caligula's profile picture

That's the way to do it. Wash cars, rake leaves, mow lawns, help paint a friends house. I did all of those to earn my own money. But vacuum cleaners were expensive, even the used ones. Aside from the Electrolux model LX I bought myself because I loved it and it was only $30.00, I bought it. But the first serious vacuum cleaner was a non electric for $75.00 from a good friend of mine named John Meloney. When he retired, he opened Elderberry antiques in New Hampshire. John got me all my early non electrics, as well as the Whirlwind that dates back to 1869. But the first was called the Lakeside, and it dates back to 1890. Here's a picture of it.

I admire anybody who ears his own stuff, way to go!

It's not about

Persuasion. Ask them why they are saying no and then digest the reply you get.

Bullying anyone into anything is only going to cause bad feeling. So find out the reasons why first and then suggest a compromise.

One in, two out would be a start. Find two cleaners you are willing to sell and then offer to get rid of them in order to buy this one.

Your parents may just be being horrible, but living in a flat as you said you do, they could simply be worried about how much space you are going to take over for vacuum cleaners. Find the root cause and address it in a constructive and mature way. Good luck.

When I was young in the 70's and the 80's, when my parents said NO - they meant it, and any cheek or whining would have been ignored, or met with a clip round the ear, or worse.

I think as Benny does - in that whilst you are still living under your mother's roof, she dictates the law as to what happens there, and she may indeed be concerned that your vacs are taking up too much room, and that as soon as you get the Numatic you would just want more and more.

The best time to start a collection is when you have your own home and then you can decide just how many vacs you have the space for, and indeed, can afford to buy yourself, after the rent and bills are paid.

Actually, Listen to Steve, he's wise! :D

I actually managed to persuade my parents to get a DC14 Origin today. Show your parents your report card if it's good. Offer to do chores and clean your room etc.
Help your mum and let her relax more than usual.
As for Dad, ask him when he is in a good mood such as payday.
If he is given a gift by someone, he may be happy and be in the giving mood so ask then :D
show your parents that you want this badly and work very hard.
You might find this hard but think of the Numatic.
Tell them the advantages about it so that they are more convinced

Tell your parents how it will benefit them instead of you.
Say you will not have any more vacs for a while and pay them for it because if not then they may not believe you next time
Google more tips :)

PS Ask your parents "What can I do to have this?"
Don't yell, slam doors argue or fold your arms, Go with the flow of your parents.
Sell a vac quickly on eBay or Gumtree for example...
