Just up on eBay: "Nicest You Seen! Vintage Hoover Vacuum Cleaner"
It really does look good. I am not the seller. If I were in the market for a model 28, I'd snap this up. I can not post a picture, but heres the link.

hooversrus, what did you do to the Hoover 28? It looks too good. The housing (Bakelight?) is as shiny as you will find. You had to re-paint, right?

What did you do to the motor (carbon brushes and ...)

Come on, fess up, o.k.?

.

Yes all repainted, scratches taken out hood. Motor completely torn apart and redone. Everything has to original was in my basement for 30+ years. Only thing I had to find was a set of brushes for the roller

This 28 is fairly nice, however, the owner missed the mark with the color and style of the paint used on the base. It should be darker brown, and of the "wrinkle finish" type -- which is available in spray paint in larger hardware or paint stores.

I think anyone who really loves old Hoovers will agree with me that this just "doesn't look right." It would be like painting an old Electrolux purple or orange!

Here are a couple of photos of an all-original Model 28.

Here's a close-up of the original brown wrinkle-finish paint:

I used to have two Model 28s. They were slightly different:

==VERSION ONE==

Serial number 2967316

Serial number plate silver color w/ dark brown lettering; wording different from mottled version

Motor bumper very dark gray rubber w/ ribbed top surface

Hoover logo under headlight housing gold color; background color of metal dark brown

"Fan" shaped area under headlight dark brown smooth bakelite

Painted base brown "wrinkle finish"

Motor hood very smooth brown bakelite; alternating gold and dark-brown stripes actually painted or decal'ed on the bakelite instead of a separate metal strip

Handle grip light brown plastic

Both agitator brush strips straight; beater bars curved

Bag connector-ring made of metal - painted dark brown

Brown cord with Hoover logo on plug

Brown cloth bag

==VERSION TWO==

Serial number 3957014

Serial number plate gold color w/ dark brown lettering; wording different from smooth version

Motor bumper medium brown rubber w/ smooth top surface

Hoover logo under headlight housing platinum color; background color of metal dark brown

"Fan" shaped area under headlight dark brown mottled bakelite

Painted base brown "wrinkle finish"

Motor hood very mottled brown; silver stripes on separate dark brown metal strip riveted around bottom edge

Handle grip dark brown plastic

Both agitator brush strips curved; beater bars curved

Bag connector-ring made of mottled brown bakelite

Brown cord with Hoover logo on plug

Brown cloth bag

Here's a video of collector Roger Proehl showing his beautiful Model 28. (Note: It's a 60-mb video so it will take a couple of minutes to load.)

Here's a pic of my Hoover 28 with attachments, box, and instructions. Completely refurbished by Tom Anderson in 2006 (Thanks again, Tom!). Bag and cord are replacements, everything else is original 28.

TV Show Sighting

Here's a screenshot from THE LUCY SHOW S3—E13 "Lucy the Coin Collector" originally televised on December 14, 1964, which appears to be a Model 28. Scene background ... Jerry finds a vintage penny worth 50¢, which gives Lucy the idea of withdrawing a bag of 2000 pennies from the Danfield Bank in hopes of finding a collectible one herself. When she and Viv accidentally spill the pennies on their kitchen floor she decides to pick them up with a vacuum cleaner!
