A Decade hood with the words Convertible! Model U4153 Hoover Convertible Elite 4.3 Amp motor for floors, 4.7 Amp motor for tools. 11 blade plastic fan

So a little less than 2 weeks ago I spotted this gorgeous machine on eBay. I was completely confused at first. I've never seen a Decade styled hood mentioning Convertible. Then come to find out it has a 4.3 Amp motor!!! I love these style hoods because those wrap around headlights with 2 bulbs just look incredible!!

Some of you may remember that I believe the very first vacuum I've ever used had a 4.3 Amp motor. The sound of that motor to me sounds different from all of the others, along with the different fan, as many of the 4.8 Amp motor machines and upwards utilize the 6 blade fan. After much thought and gathering more information from others I decided to bid. So many variables into place here, it just sounded like it needed to be rescued from the eBay world.

I won the auction Monday a week ago and it arrived safe and sound today! It would be perfect if it was a darker based color such as navy blue. The color was the main hold up from decision making.

How late do you work?

After a long day of work, making dinner and other things, I just decided to keep on going. I looked inside and saw the belt and bag in good shape. But brush roll doesn't rotate properly and I noticed some extra noise rotating fan. So apart it comes!!!

To Be Continued!

durango159's profile picture
It's all back together. The fan sounds much better. Some dirt on carbon brushes, lots of dust and dirt on cooling fan and top bearing plate, the usual amount on underside of fan, but additionally a fair build up of gunk on fan blades. All got vacuumed/ wiped/ scrubbed accordingly. The motor sounds good. 1 headlamp bulb is burnt out.

The agitator end caps do not want to loosen. Tried a few things. I'm out of WD-40 so that's unhelpful. Also brush strips could use replacement. So I think we're probably going to end up just getting a new brush roll.

I thought about switching brush roll from a Convertible to try it, but living in a townhouse I don't want to make much noise this hour. Therefore we'll postpone for now and figure things out over the Holiday weekend.

There is a small tear in vinyl bag at bottom front. It's not major but could get there. Haven't decided what if anything I want to do about that though. Also bottom of zipper is starting to separate from vinyl. That I think I can put a few stitches in though to remedy.

Happy, Safe Thanksgiving to all and I'll update as progress goes.

Glad it arrived safe and sound though!!

Good for you to rescue it! I have done that with a few of my eBay finds.... You never know where a poor old machine might end up. Hell, someone could have ended up using MY Electrolux Model XXX as a shop vac, and forget to install the bag! Yikes! I am glad that I was the only bidder, too.....

Nice Decade/Convertible! I can't say I've ever seen one like that, but I do remember using my grandma's old Convertible awhile back. The plug broke off a few years ago and she gave me the whole machine to take apart.... I wish I had saved it! Oh, well, I'll find another one someday....

All Fixed!!

I took the stuck brush roll to my local vac to get a replacement. While they were able to get it unstuck they said it needed washers and bearings and they were out of washers. They recommended the new CWP roller. So I got a CWP.

Upon installing the CWP roller at home, I didn't like the sound of it. I thought the motor was struggling. So I took apart the old brush roll which they had loosened. I found some old bearings and washers in my spare parts, cleaned them all up, lubricated bearings replaced a bad end cap and now the vacuum sounds great. It does still need a brush strip on the one side but it runs quite well and grooms gorgeously.

I installed the CWP in my other Convertible that is a 4.8 Amp to see how it does. I'm still not completely thrilled by the sound, can't tell if its harming the motor or not. The CWP grooms well and propels the vac quite a bit just wish it ran smoother. I think I'm still probably going to seek a 4 brush Hoover brush roll.

Borrowing an idea from another collector I found some blue bulbs at Lowe's. Shamefully they're only 4 Watt and for camera sake they don't look good, in real life they look neat. I also have standard headlight bulbs around the house so we'll try those in as well.

Happy Hoovering to all!

Never judge a vacuum by it's box! You could be very pleasantly surprised.

Thank you very much Mike and John!! It's doing well. I'll have to try the normal headlights on it to see how it looks!!! One thing I need to figure out as well is that the A bag on this slides down into a holder and does not create a good seal with the bag thereby making some mess. I am using a Hoover HEPA A bag in it. I may have to resort to a piece of masking tape to keep cardboard collar under notch at top of sliding bag holder.

Anyone having any other experiences and recommendations for the sliding bag holder, please shout them out!!

I'd say your best bet is to replace the fill tube with a later push-on style fill tube.  I had the same thing happening with one of my Convertibles.
