I think it is a perfect example of how James Dyson had little practical knowledge of what is needed from a vacuum cleaner. If he thought that all hose-cleaning could be done with the wand attached, he was soon proven wrong. I have never seen the likes of this before.

I think VR is right - but cleaning with the wand on a Dyson Dc01 / Da001 when there is hardly any suction coming through isn't very effective :(

The early DC01 came with an adaptor that fits between the tools and the hose. Don't you have one? It stores on the machine with the rest of the tools at either side.

Not on this one it doesn't. The lumps on either side of the cleaner are the same size. The model which takes an adapter has a 2-stage lump on the one side, so as to accommodate the smaller bore adapter.

Yes but can't the adapter slide down the crevice tool?

No, the crevice tool is much too wide.

That's intriguing.

I always assumed that the top of the handle with the rest of the hose and that inner metal tube formed part of the stretch hose with the tool pushed in on the end of the handle?

The tool kit consisted of four parts; a crevice tool, a dusting brush, a small tool, and an adaptor. On either side of what I thought was all cleaners like the DC01 were two plastic lumps of different sizes. On the larger side, the crevice tool was stored, with either the dusting brush or small tool pushed onto the top of that.

On the other side of the cleaners, the adapter fitted to the smaller section of the plastic lump, and onto that the remaining tool, be it the dusting brush or small tool. However, this lump was tapered in size and the bottom of it was the same diameter as the lump on the other side, meaning that a tool could still be attached for storage, even without the adapter.

But as per the original message and photographs here, we can see that the adapter was never part of the original design, it would seem.
