I see people constantly knocking the Purepower - Ok they are cheap and made in China now, but having tried one out, they aint that bad for an £80 budget vac. I will stick my hand up and defend the old timer.

If the Purepower was that naff, how come its been in production virtually unchanged for 16 years now? Surely HooverCandy would not produce something after it was not commercially viable? People must still want them - those that don't want bagless uprights don't exactly have much choice now in the budget area do they if they cant afford a Sebo or Miele bagged upright.

I do think that the Dyson jokes are good though "It creaks as it leaks as it sweeps" lol

Well, "it creaks as it leaks as it sweeps," all came out the top of my head, playing along the words of Hoover's famous song and mantra.

Steve - just because something has been sold long enough doesn't make it good. If Hoover were serious about bagged uprights, don't you think they'd be offering far more than just one model in a range? Clearly they're on the bagless route because its cheaper to produce those vacuums as they are all the rage.

In my lifetime I have had three Purepower bagged uprights. The first being a "lifetime" model where the lifetime bag lasted longer than the vacuum itself, the second was a horrid high power PU2000 model (not the right model number but I have not a care in the world for getting modern Hoover model numbers precisely correct) that was bought as a "replacement" gift when my friend had borrowed my Electrolux Powerlite upright and duly broke it, thus figuring to go with the name "Hoover," as they thought it was the next best thing, and bits like the handle release pedal broke off, broken wheels, far too noisy and far too heavy to push over the light plastic injection art Powerlite.

The third model was the final straw - creaking plastics, far too much hot air and a broken sole plate that actually shattered, with yet again another handle release pedal breakage. The back door HEPA cartridge holder also had poor plastic lugs as well as a rather vulnerable anti-roll over piece of plastic to hook the bottom hose on the rear.

I can't stand the Purepower as a result. You may think they are a budget vacuum, but in my experience, whenever Hoover Europe and the word "budget" comes up in a board room, they naturally jump to cosmetically tarting up any old mule in the hope that the average Joe Bloggs will coo over the glitter paint or duo paint job and don't realise they have bought an old bit** until things start to go wrong, several weeks after ownership. The Purepower does not deserve the Hoover brand name nowadays. Hoover used to have a great reputation for quality and reliability - even the TTI owned ones in the U.S appear to be better made, despite louder motors.

Hoover should have continued with the Turbopower 3 series but continually offered little differences here and there. By god, when you look at SEBO's 20 year old X series that continues to be sold with few differences in the form of the X1.1 and X4, you'd have thought a company like Hoover who were used to adding cosmetic and motor upgrades could have done the same. Instead we get the lighter plastic and poorly built Purepower.

Post# 252693 , Reply# 34   10/12/2013 at 13:30 (3,819 days old) by RootCyclone (East Midlands,UK.)

Well I wouldn't say the Purepowers are too bad, they just don't edge clean very well compared to a Turbopower 2. There not budget, but priced similar.

Only problem with todays purepowers is they have truly too high wattage of motors, 2100W is WAY TOO MUCH! The earlier PurePowers we're much better with a 1400W motor, that seemed just about right. Purepowers aren't bad looking, but not the best in my opinion. Still would like one for my collection though :)

Post# 252694 , Reply# 35   10/12/2013 at 13:33 (3,819 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

I agree that the build quality on the 2013 model is VERY cheap, but I think that HooverCandy are just trying to make people switch over to bagless by only supplying a very dated bagged model, as compared to the Panasonic MCUG522 which although not state of the art is at least a new bagged model. Basically, as most people now want bagless thanks to Mr Dyson, HooverCandy cant be bothered investing in a new bagged upright, so keep on tarting up the Purepower with new colour schemes and ever more powerful motors. One thing I don't like though and am surprised that this was never improved is the foot release knob, which is VERY stiff and hard to press, so I have to wear shoes to do it, otherwise I get an awful clicking sound as the upright body strains the pedal assy. Its easy to see why so many pedal assy's broke. I see also that the original activator brushroll has been replaced by a small diameter one with long bristles, and the edge cleaning tufts have now gone, replaced by simple suction channels. There is no bag check indicator and no autosense options to choose from either. Yes, indeed the Purepower is now very cheaply built, but the price does reflect this, with today's models costing LESS than the equivalent in 1997. But despite this it still gives a good carpet clean and is very easy to push.

The PU2115 (sold by Argos), and my latest buy:

Well the most ironic thing is, if bagged uprights were on their way out, why are Hoover selling the Purepower nearer £100 compared to their starter bagless uprights at £60? Price has very little to do with justifying quality and design these days - don't forget we're still in a recession, so the models that once had a cheaper price have now risen in price - not just down to the import duties but also for the fact that the production costs are higher.

Now have a look at both specs taken from www.hoover.co.uk.... The left hand side shows the cheapest Purepower at £89-99 versus the bagless "Discovery," *Smart based bagless upright at £59-99. Clearly whilst the Purepower benefits from being bagged, I'd have thought the air watts would be much more stronger than just 290 air watts, 40 more than the bagless. Of course we can argue that the air watts would be irrelevant since neither can give 100% suction all of the time, but I'd expect for the more expensive price of the Purepower to have at least a lighter weight. Ok so you gain more dust capacity, but to me, the Purepower is a bit overpriced when taking into consideration the cheaper bagless Discovery upright.

Once I was vacuuming the stairs with a DC07, then next thing you know the suction got slightly blocked, and I NEARLY FELL DOWN THE STAIRS! OMG It was trying to kill me, DC07's are deadly, but I used Dyson's for stair cleaning, especially DC07's all the time but it only happened twice, I never fell tho :) I hold one hand with the metal part of the wand, and one with the upper wand

I'd pay max £20 for a DC41 new, that's how much I HATE THOSE THINGS

I would pay max £300 for a new DC15. It grooms well, has a metal soleplate, has excellent suction. The DC04 has more suction and cleans better than a DC41!!!

Older Dyson's are better than the new ones.

I had a field day with IMGflip. Ranging from everybody's FAVORITE metal upright to making fun of lesser known modern machines from well-known brands.

I have to laugh at the last 2 memes and heres why;

meme 1: (reply 116): its so true that kirby doesn't do much in terms of changing their models. I mean all they really do lately (within the past 4 models) is change the handle, name, pappern design and color, other than that nothing really new from kirby in, well a really long time.

meme 2 (reply 117): although the SRX is new theres a lot of additional improvements rainbow could improve on. Maybe they will with future models and hopefully its what everyone wants. For me, all i really want to know is, is there a 4qt water basin and 14ft hose for this model? thats all I want for this model. And if there isn't I'll work with what it comes with, or if one or both are available for it, even better. I do wish they redisign the aquamate and or the rainjet, and maybe they will down the line but either way im good with the current verson that they have for the SRX.

I wonder when people start getting the SRX how many new forums will be popping up. Also who here is planning on getting the SRX? If so, can yall post unboxing videos and pics on here of it? as well as the owners manual and optional accessories that are purchased with it?

It has nothing to do with the vacuum brand - so enough with that. The fact is the vacuum is too new to have parts for it available yet. Hoover, Maytag, Eureka, Sebo, Riccar all do the same thing.

Also you can take any of those tiny parts to a company that does 3D plastic printing and have a new part made from digitally scanning the old one, so you don't even need to care if the company supplies OEM parts anymore. You can have any part machined out now with a 3D printer or CNC machine - you can even do it yourself if you wanna make a business out of it and purchase all the tools and machine. Gotta think outside the box. Just like any old car it takes thought and a strategy plan to keep it maintained and running, because the manufacturer won't.
