This vacuum is one of my earliest childhood vacuums, it's a Hoover Windtunnel but I know nothing about it! All I know is that it doesn't work, it was my mom's daily driver and it's a Hoover. That information doesn't really help but I am hoping that some of you know something about this model. Before I came here and decided to post something, I tried to learn something about it. I read the instruction manual, looked on Hoover's website and even checked the forums and archives on this website! I found nothing! For about 2 years it sat in our garage waiting to be put out to the trash and I've caught my mom in the act trying to throw it out. She really doesn't want it in the house but I told her that it works but just needs to be fixed. I am the last person you should ask to fix a Hoover because I know nothing about them! Two years back this vacuum suddenly stopped working and my mom quickly replaced it with a bissel because with two shedding dogs around we have to vacuum at least twice a day. So that's how it ended up in the garage. But one day I decided to see if I could get it to work.and I did for just a few seconds and then it turned off. I believe that the cord is shorted out because it is frayed in a whole bunch of different spots, but this weekend I might be able to bring it to my local vacuum store and see if they can fix it/replace the cord. It is a Hoover WindTunnel TurboPOWER 5100. It has all but one attachment. It says on the sticker: THE HOOVER CO. N. CANTON, OH 44720. MODEL: U5415-900. Is this model rare? And do any of you have it?

The TurboPower line was Hoover's TOL offering during the mid-90s to the early 2000s. They were sold at select retailers, which were primarily higher-end appliance dealers. The higher the product number, the more high-end the machine is. For example, the BOL Turbopower was the 1000 Tempo-style straight suction canister. The TOL was the 8000, a bagless self-propelled Windtunnel. So your 5100 was the mid-range machine.

What is the serial number? You can tell the age by the first four digits. I would estimate yours is from 1998/1999.

Discoveries

Ok, I knew I had two TurboPowers and had to check the labels out to see what I could find. First up, a TurboPower 4500 w/Softguard..model nbr. U5264-930..ser. no. 079900032336...made in the USA. Second up, a TurboPower 5200..model nbr. 5444-900. This one has two bar codes on the label, the top one has 19881 16018 4 under it, the bottom bar code has 060500002992...made in Mexico. I'm clear on the 4500 with the simpler label, that it was made in Jul '99. The 5200 has me confused as to the production date..was it June '05? Why the bar codes on the 5200 and none on the 4500? I do know that I would put the 5200 WindTunnel version up against any clean air upright in carpet cleaning ability, it's my favorite newer machine in my collection. The 4500 is no slouch either for a "dirty air" machine, and is quieter. Windtunnels have come and gone in my collection, I'll get one, use it for a while and then someone will ask me if I have any good pre-owned uprights for sale. Since I have a thing for sets in my collection, no one is getting either one of these, they are both great performers, and keepers for sure! If someone can enlighten me on the label/nbr. differences on the labels, I'd be much appreciative!

You have a powerful machine

durango159's profile picture
This unit in proper working order will outclean whatever Bissell you have! While most Hoover vacuums carried a 1 year warranty, the Turbo Power line was primarily a private dealer exclusive line and carried a 2 year warranty.

These are powerful cleaners. My guess with it not working is that along with a possible electrical issue with the cord that the machine also needs a good cleaning.

Here are some things you can do and what you may need:
Possible parts:
Hoover Type Y Bag
Hoover Windtunnel Non-Self Propelled belt, model: 38528-033
Hoover 13" brush roll: Model: 48414110

Phillips Screwdriver
Rags
Glass cleaner or multi purpose spray cleaner

Anything you're unsure of go to your local vacuum shop, you can look online on hoover.com/locator/...
Enter your zip code and they will locate you an Authorized Hoover Service Center in your area to get Genuine Hoover parts. Don't get generic belts or things like that. A Hoover repair center can match up your brushroll, belts, filters, offer advice, etc. Also evaluate your brush roll as there are bearings and endcaps that most likely need cleaning and is best left in hands of an expert.

The attached link leads to a similar Hoover Windtunnel user manual. You can refer to info on there for changing belts, bag replacement and other things. What you'll want to do 1st is Open bag door. Most likely it needs a new bag, At the bottom of that bag compartment is a filter. Lift up the protection grate and clean or replace that filter. On the right hand side of that bag compartment is another filter. It may be accessible via a pull down white tab inside the bag compartment area or a door that opens. Whichever method-- open compartment and replace that filter. Both of these filters are washable, but depending on well they come out or if they're tattered and worn, you may be better off with new. You can take these filters to your local Hoover Authorized Service Center and they'll find you the parts.

Next Phase:
Flip vacuum over so that you have access to the brush roll area in the cleaning head. As illustrated in the link to the user manual below there are 4 screws in the front of the bottom plate. Remove those screws. You'll want to check the brush roll, replace belt and do a thorough cleaning.

The brush roll otherwise known as agitator should be completely clean of all hairs, threads and bristles need to be of decent length. A good way to check is with vacuum fully assembled, running a credit card along bottom plate and see how far onto the credit card the brushes touch. About 1/8" or so is what you want, across the full length. With no belt attached, the brushroll should rotate very smoothly with great ease. No rubbing, grinding or resistance to anything of the sort.

With the brush roll and belt removed, pull out the black plastic "Windtunnel" duct agitator cavity that the brush roll was locked into. It is the black piece that spans the entire width of the housing. It should just lift out. Clean everything up. Can you glass cleaner or whatever. While doing so, you'll see the large approx. 1.25" round duct where airflow hose connects to that area on the right hand side of housing. That duct needs to be completely clear and clean!!

With all of that in good shape, cavity reinstalled agitator and new belt installed, put on base plate. Give brush roll a few turns manually and make sure it is smooth with the new belt on.

Testing Stage:
Remove hose from where it connects to the base, as if you were going to use the vacuum with attachments. Turn on machine and make sure your hose is clear. Should have TONS of air flow and suction. Then reconnect hose to cleaner base in the port and ensure great airflow still--- no change of motor tone.

If all of that is good, then pat yourself on the back and Hoover the house!

Let us know how it all goes, and don't hesitate to ask further advice here or see your local service shop!

As for the cord, buy a cheap extension cord from a hardware store, cut off the end that doesn't go into the wall, cut off the old cord of the WindTunnel, strip the insulation, and connect the colored wires together. Save a lot of money doing that ;)

Update

Hi everyone! I wasn't able to do anything to my hoover yet since I've been very busy with other things, and also I I've started to restore a couple other vacuums. Such as my Dyson dc07, check that out in "Trash Find Dyson" thread. Also I have begun to restore my hoover convertible, which is still in progress and I still need to restore my 1950's Sanitaire Deluxe. Check that out in "Sunday Funday Vintage Find" so unfortunately my hoover might not get a spa day until Sunday, I might put the Sanitaire off to the side so I can work on the hoover

Ah, so the American market did get a Hoover Turbopower then. It doesn't look a lot like the 90's models that we got though. Here's a Turbopwer 1000 that I just acquired, made in 1994

The Turbo Power and the Turbopower series is different in the U.S than the UK. We just share the same name. The TP1 was sold under the Hoover Sovereign in the U.S see previous thread for more.

I don't think the 2 are linked in anyway. Infact, if this is from 98/99 as stated above, this would be after Hoover Europe was sold to Candy, so it won't have any link to Hoover Europe at all, other than the name, right?

Yes, but don't forget even after Candy took over Hoover Europe, it didn't stop Hoover sending models over to the U.S under different guises and vice versa, even if it was just canister/cylinder vacs etc Wasn't the Discovery a U.S canister model originally, for example?
