I just bought an Electrolux 1205 for $5 today! has the hose and no other attachments. The hose has a partly crushed spot in it, any idea how to get it back in shape? tried applying pressure to it to squeeze it back, but the wire coil is pretty tough. May try my vise grips with padding on them.
Pretty cool vac. Any info on when they were made?

Dates:

From 1968 until 1973, if memory serves.

There are several iterations of the 1205. Early ones used a separate power cord clipped to the hose for the PN; there was a separate electrical port under the suction port for the cord to plug into. There were other minor detail changes, as well.

If you find a way of re-forming that hose, you'll be doing very well. I've never been able to do it.

About the only way...

Is to gently pound on it with a rubber mallet so that the dent pops out, but if it is the electric hose, it will be more difficult.

it has the cord clipped on the outside, so it might be an earlier version. I'll try the rubber mallet trick too. thanks!

Early Version:

Make sure you have the correct hose for the machine; it might be that someone just threw in whatever hose was lying about.

An early 1205 will have a little outlet under the suction port for the PN cord to plug into. If you do not see the little outlet, you have a later 1205 that uses an electrified hose. On these machines, the electrical connection is made inside the suction port automatically when you insert the hose.

If you have a true early 1205, non-electric hoses for metal-bodied Lux machines are not nearly as expensive as electric ones. PN cords are also available. The straps that hold the cord to the hose are not easy to find, though, so save any that came with your hose.

Yes, it has the outlet under the hose, and the cord on the outside. It's a blue/turquoise color hose, with an outer braided cover. I got most of the dent out, but not all. If I can find a hose in the same color for under $30, I'll probably get one.

Congratulations....

Early 1205s aren't as common as the later ones, so you've got a somewhat uncommon Lux there.

The correct PN for your machine is the turquoise PN-1, and the correct tool color for all your tools is turquoise. The rug/floor tool that came with your machine would have had the metal neck, not the later plastic one.

One of these machines with the correct PN and tools would be a beautiful sight and a terrific addition to any collection.

The tools that came with the machine were:

- Floor/rug tool
- Flipover dusting brush/upholstery tool
- Crevice tool

As you look for tools, you may find ones that have the horsehair bristles worn down or worn out. They can be replaced; many vac shops carry them and you can find them on eBay as well.

Also, the flipover dusting brush/upholstery tool has a rubber neck inside that is often torn, and is not replaceable. Gel-formula superglue will repair it. This neck fits over the wand when you're using the tool for upholstery.

An instruction manual in PDF format is available from Automatic Ephemera, a "sister" site to Vacuumland and Automaticwasher.org; just go to:

www.automatice.org...

There is a small charge to download the manual, but the quality of the scan is phenomenal.

Last, the correct turquoise wand for your PN-1 can be hard to find. Later telescoping wands do fit the PN-1. My own 1205 uses a late telescoping wand from a Diamond Jubilee for daily use; the fragile original is put away for safekeeping. This is not strictly "original," but at least it's a genuine Lux part that fits my machine.

Happy hunting!

The Electrolux 1205 was the top-rated canister in Consumer Reports tests at the time....I think it is the 1970 vacuum test... and it's possible that this report is even accessible on our Vacuumland website....IIRC :-)

Ok, thanks for the info! Always liked the design of the Lux in general. Somewhere I have an Electrolux duster brush with turquoise sides that flip down, to what purpose I don't know. It has real horsehair bristles, so I might add it to the vac once I find it. Also have a sprayer from Electrolux with a glass jar. Now for the other attachments, I'll just have to look.
Cool to know I have yet another unique vac!

Here's....

....A complete set of 1205 tools, less the wands, on eBay at a very reasonable Buy It Now price:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Green-Vintage-...

The dusting brush is a "flipover" combination tool. You flip those wings up and put the hose in that side, right between the wings (with the wings against the sides of the hose end), for dusting.

For upholstery, flip the wings down, and stick the hose into the OTHER side, right in the middle of the brush bristles. That converts the tool to an upholstery tool.

The floor/rug tool is also a flipover tool; ask if you want to know more.

Ok, that makes sense, although the brush I have is white on the brush part with blue "wings". I'm tempted to get that set.

Will:

The dusting brush you have is the one that came with the first version of the Model L, as well as some other machines that came with an off-white body and turquoise trim. It will work perfectly well with your 1205 even if it's not the same brush that came with 1205s.

The eBay set is at a good price; I've seen the rug/floor tool go for much more than that by itself. And the crevice tool is a little hard to find; I had quite a time locating one for my 1205.

The nice thing about that set is that it's one-stop shopping; all you need besides those tools is a set of wands, which you can probably find locally at a vac shop. They usually have a few Lux wands around. The correct Lux wands are aluminum and don't have a lock button on them; they are just a force-fit to put together.

P.S., Will:

Vac shops also often have PN-1s sitting around. The all-turquoise model is the correct one for an early 1205. You may also see a white PN-1 with turquoise trim; this was for the first Model L and some other white/turquoise machines.

Love the 1205's. Can't wait until I get an example. As an aside, I clicked on that link above but was unable to locate any scan for a 1205 even after clicking on Electrolux and vacuum cleaners.

There was a site that had FREE manuals for some vacs on it, if I can find it again, I'll post a link. (I'd pay a few $ for a printed manual, but not for a digital one I can get for free elsewhere)
