.....AND NOW I OWN THE SAME MODEL!!!
Thanks to the extreme generosity to one of Vacuumland's members, I've been gifted a childhood machine. The vacuum cleaner is a Hoover Celebrity II Elite S3061-030. I never got full appreciation for the machine years ago because I never ever had the chance to run it with a power nozzle. My father had me cleaning cars with it and on occasion I'd be asked to vacuum dead bugs off window sills or I remember one time, my mother took down all of the curtains to be vacuumed as well. They were the very stiff material curtains with hooks in the pleats at the top and were attached to the pulley run opening mechanism. Other than that I was too young to ever use it before my parents decided not to have it repaired when it broke down. Another strange thing to my history with this is that I never saw the original power head. The power head that I remember with this machine was a Guardsman power nozzle with the red bumper. I always thought the color scheme was weird to have a cinnamon orange colored suction unit with a red themed power head. Then I learned that the original power head had to be replaced and this was the replacement. Due to abuse from users at our house the Guardsman power head received heavy damage and became unusable after some time as well. Luckily by then we had inherited my grandparents Hoover Dimension 1000 canister, so it's Quadraflex Powermatic nozzle became the roamer of both machines as my parents had a vacuum on each floor. Our cleaning lady always seemed to get small toys such as my sisters Barbie doll kitchen kettle sucked into the machine. I remember the kitchen kettle the most because it sounded so awful, and stunk so bad when that got sucked in. Upon investigation that toy sized kitchen kettle was the perfect size to completely seal off and get stuck into the suction inlet of the agitator cavity. Anyway, I think another reason I am so excited to have this in my collection now is because my parents barely ever used it. Our house got vacuumed once a week by our cleaning lady who came every Thursday. So childhood memories, not linked so highly to my overprotected/ "sheltered" childhood as I sort of feel with my parents and I greatly appreciate this machine. Despite being loud, the tone and especially whirl down of the suction motors on these, coupled with the mean looking power heads makes me so happy to own this unit. ****By the way, I rent a townhouse. I did not pick out that color carpet. I have no idea why that color carpet would be in a rental unit. I love the garage, central A/C, good neighborhood and other assets of the place. |

It didn't need much being very well cared for by another collector, but I decided to take it all apart and check it all out anyways. In the process of cleaning everything, I've made a few tweaks. I managed to have some spare agitator brush strips around so I replaced those as I thought they received a lot of wear. In working on the power head, I found that the Agitator Seal Assembly that fits on on end of agitator to seal off the belt area was missing. A quick search online and I got extremely lucky to find one on eBay, brand new in packaging, so that's ordered!!
Hoover discontinued the filters for these machines and it was missing one, so I created a filter. I cut one of my FilterQueen cellulose test filter pads along another piece of A/C duct filter material that I've used for various other vacuums, so it has like a dual stage filtration to it. Don't worry John Long, the filters do not say FilterQueen on them!!! This machine will be all HOOVER!! The seals around the agitator cavity of the bottom plate were quite worn, so I replaced those with some foam weather stripping. Finally, since these units are quite loud, I cut out a similar sized foam ring as would be in the QS series Celebrities and put that around the motor. There was a weather stripping style foam styled seal down there, that was all broken up, so now a larger foam piece functions as a sealing cushion and partial sound muffler. I am ecstatic with the condition of the machine and can't thank Bill enough!! It has all 4 attachments, and headlight lens, with hose in great shape. The headlight lens seems to be an issue when coming across some these Celebrities. It's great to get a machine with everything included as would be from the factory about 36 years later. The power head motor is stamped 1977. |

The Celebrity II Elite S3061-030 and Celebrity IV Elite S3141.
Power nozzles are identical with exception of color. The handle release doesn't lock too well on the Celebrity II. I may work on that at some point. I really like the raised center on suction unit of the Celebrity II Elite, especially with the Hoover logo right in the middle. Bodies of both suction units are metal. I wish the power nozzle had a metal frame. I like the shiny chrome 2 piece wand style of the Celebrity IV better. |

The Celebrity IV Elite is sturdier standing on its rear.
I really like the large rubber coated traction wheels of the Celebrity II Elite though. Most people know that I'm a deep blue person. If Hoover had that deep navy blue that's on the bottom of the machine, on the top of one at some point, that would be another machine, I'd have to own. |

Power heads are about the same. I just have different bristles in the Celebrity II. They both the same and to me feel about the same texture.
To me the agitator plates don't look nearly bad in real life as this picture depicts. The Celebrity II agitator could use some painting. I may do that. Has anyone else painted and agitator before and if so what is recommended? I've also thought about spray painting the rust on the bottom plate. Has anyone ever done that? Thanks!! |

This was the exact machine my Mother bought in the late 70s, I begged her to buy a Super J , but she thought 379.00 was way too much for a vacuum!LOL |

Definitely looks to me like my former Celebrity II's in really good hands. I just knew you were meant to have this machine ... from the moment you first saw it at John's that weekend, I could see what it meant to you. So I am glad to pass it along to you, and I hope that it brings you much happiness for a long, long time! Enjoy it, my friend.

I haven't heard that term before of tool garden, but I like it!! I'm glad all of the tools are there and they're all the proper ones for the unit. The upholstery nozzle especially is crucial for this unit, because Hoover discontinued that style and the PowerMax/ Dimension style upholstery nozzle just doesn't work nearly as well the design of the hose handle on the Celebrity.
John, Only the power nozzle equipped canister machines enter the door of my home. No power nozzle = not mine!! Most preferably headlights too since I like the look and also so great for getting under beds etc. I kinda feel like my collection is in great shape right now. I have 9 machines total, including 1 carpet washer and only 1 upright. LOL!!!! Everything else is canisters. 7 power nozzle canisters, one of which is a Eureka Rotomatic 1784B. I gave my other Eureka canister the Express to a client. Long story towards my donation of that to her but I felt it was the right thing to do and the Express definitely was not a favorite of mine. My only upright is pictured below. Surprising my only upright doesn't have a headlight but it was a Goodwill find for cheap and works well. I've been told to upgrade the brushroll on it, as it's a baseline cheapy with no beater bar and only single row bristle from Hoover plus possible bearing issue. |

I can't thank you enough Bill! The machine is great, I had it plugged in most of the day today, just using it at various points.
I love the sound of the clicking cord winder on these. I love the whir of the motor while running and shut down. It sounds like a Hoover and doesn't have that high pitched annoying noise of many suction unit canisters sold on the market today. So many new market vacs sound obnoxious. I love the power. The color is great although power head would be neat if it had some orange. Usually all of my vacs are put away in a closet, but right now this one is sitting out in the open in my bedroom!! All full sized tools. Long hose, variable suction, great agitation, headlight. The box style headlight although bulkier than other power nozzles just looks really neat. Very large capacity bag, with nice sealing rubber gasket all around power nozzle and canister. It's a bulkier machine being round, but actually until I saw the Celebrity IV Elite a few months back and it had been a while since I'd seen a Hoover Celebrity, they are more compact than I remember. The large wheels make them maneuver fairly well to me too. I am used to canisters though, since it essentially all I use. I use uprights only for quick clean ups and power head canisters when I want something thorough. Normally all of my vacs get put away in a closet. But for right now this one is sitting out in the open of my bedroom!! It is coming to the next MiniMeet as well! |

I, too, like those headlights. I admit, though, I really do like the non-power nozzles too. They remind me of a flattened Connie, and I love Miss Connie HOOVER!
I enjoyed 'housing' that convertible here for a while. It was nice the see the 'contrast' between it and so many others from a very different vintage, ie. the 69.I'm trying to 'nail down' a date for the Halloween get together. Looking forward to seeing you again. John |

Lets just say I never forgave my Mother for buying the Celebrity and for not buying the Super J! |
