I don't know if it's just because I like old vacuum cleaners, but I keep finding them in books I read to my kids. It seems that a lot of illustrators have an eye for vacuums. Here's an example:

One of the first books I remember reading, or being read to, was called The Penguin & The Vacuum Cleaner.
It was about a zoo keeper, his wife Mrs Bird and a sick penguin that Mr Bird brought home to look after.
The penguin was kept in an open drawer in the dresser and when he was alone he came across the vacuum cleaner and tried to engage it in a conversation. One thing led to another and after switching the vacuum on, the penguin, thinking the vacuum was hungry, started to suck up all manor of items in the house until it eventually blew up.

I still have that book somewhere, it's one of the oldest items I have from my childhood, along with some Wade Whimsies animals and a Wombles pillowcase.

The old children's book "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" I can't find the illustration online, but the mouse runs afoul of a cleaning lady and her vacuum cleaner in the book and nearly ends up becoming a gobbled up dust bunny himself!

Was 'The brave little toaster' a book as well as a movie? there is a vacuum cleaner called Kirby, and yes, the Scott/Fetzer company does come up in the credits.

As a young kid I remember a book with a monkey named Zippy, using an Electrolux model XXX.

I'm not into cartoons, but I did see this a few times, and loved that Kirby was one of the appliances.

i know quite a few.......

one of my favorties was called Wobble the Witch Cat, By Mary Calhoun. It was written in 1961 and is a story about a witch cat who had trouble riding on a broom stick, so the cat disposed of the broom, which forced Maggie (the witch) to fly on here vacuum cleaner. The machine was a mock Hoover 700 or Kenmore coffee can knock off......I LOVED that story, and still do....Theres another book that i still have called The Very Happy Family, from the 1950's that shows a housewife vacuuming. It was one of those little Golden Books....and yes its a original vintage copy.

My favorite was "The Wednesday Witch" about a witch that leaves her magic flying Filter Queen model 200 at a little girl's home. Great photo on the front cover of the Filter Queen with the Witch perched on top.

Speaking of Brave Little Toaster

In the Brave Little Toaster book the vacuum cleaner was named Hoover, however when Walt Disney made the movie, Hoover would not allow them to use the name, so they went to Scott-Fetzer and asked to use the name Kirby. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_Littl... (this is the article for the book)

Alex, I remember the book with Zippy the monkey too. One of my cousins had it when I was little, and it was my favorite book to look at when I was at their house.

One of the earliest paperback Peanuts comic books had a strip that ended with an image of Linus pushing an upright vacuum cleaner. I remember this so vividly, because it kind of unfortunately taught me that I should be embarassed about liking to play with vacuum cleaners. I think the short strip has his older sister Sally saying: "some little brothers like to play baseball, some little brothers like to play with cars, but my little brother likes to play with vacuum cleaners...oh brother!"

Would be wonderful if someone could find this strip and post it!!!

Hey Brian

It's a decade later, but here you go along with a couple others I thought were worth posting here.

Here's a link to cartoon stock.com that has a bunch more vacuum cleaner cartoons:

Betsey and The Vacuum Cleaner

dirtmaster37's profile picture
I remember THIS book in particular as it was the ONLY kids book in my schools library having to do with vacuum cleaners. Apparently it was written in 1979 by Gunilla Wolde and there are some available, but are quite pricey.

The general gist is that Betsey used an amorphous Electrolux to do things, or possibly suck up things around the house. Remember I haven't seen this book in nearly 40 years. So I am going on limited memory.

I checked it out so much, that no one else did in the period from 1982-1985 I had the whole card inside the cover filled in with my initials, and the dates. The Librarian would just raiser her eyebrow, and sigh. And on occasion say something like: "you know. we DO have OTHER books to check out".
