I just got my first Hoover Constellation after looking for one that was "reasonably" priced. This one is a little challenged cosmetically, but the engine sounds good and it seems to work well, but I was disappointed when I put it on a hardwood floor and turned it on and it failed to "float on air". The previous owner screwed casters to the base which I promptly removed. Could the holes from the caster screws be causing a lack of floatation or should I look elsewhere? It's a model eighty-six if that matters.

Thanks!

Yes, the holes would keep the machine from floating. You need an airtight space inside the base where the exhaust would collect and tend to want to expand, which is the physics behind the floating phenomenon. The holes provide an escape for the expanding air.

Try taping over the holes from the inside where the tape won't show and see if that does the trick. Use some strong, heavy-duty tape like gaffer's tape.

What model is your Constellation ?

if it is a model 82 which is the first one it was not made to float. That feature did not come along until the model 84. PAT COFFEY

Congradulations on your first Connie

I just got one to the other day, see link attached to that thread.

My one would also not float, I found a few things, The motor plate was warped/ dented and the sponge that's acts as an exhaust filter was beyond clogged. I first fixed the motor plate and that improved it a bit but when some one reminded me about the sponge and I pulled it out that's when she took off
