Hi guys

I’m new to the forum and have joined as I am interested in vintage vacuum cleaners. I have read many of your posts and I have watched lots of your YouTube videos and I am desperate to join the club!

I currently only have one vacuum cleaner, which is a Miele S7210 upright. I did also have a Dyson cylinder, which is now being used by a friend (not sure when I’ll see it again!).

I would like to buy a Hoover Junior 1354A, in blue with the headlight. Also I want to buy a Hoover Senior 6525C. I am thinking I will then not buy any more, but I guess we have all said that lol. I have been looking on ebay but so far I haven’t managed to find good examples which have been restored and cherished. Hopefully I will find ones in really good condition, which I will then be able to maintain myself. I would like to start off by buying ones that have already been fixed up so that I can see how they are supposed to be, so that I will know when something goes wrong. I should be able to maintain them myself by replacing belts, bulbs, motor brushes, fan impellers etc.

One question: which are the best bags to use? To improve filtration, is it possible to modify bags from another brand e.g. Oreck or is it best to stick with Hoover bags? I have seen some people mention using Filteraire bags E74/F&G. Also I believe that the 6525C will definitely be bottom fill but I am not 100% sure about the 1354A. Any advice and any other information greatly appreciated! Mark

Oh YES that's it! Isn's it gorgeous (and I'm not talking about the Dyson in the background, which is what my parents have lol). I have heard that some of these have been re-wired so that the headlight no longer works. Not quite sure why. I would only buy one with a working headlight as I really want to keep it in great original condition. I have only heard the sound they make by listening to YouTube videos and am so excited to buy one and hear the sound in person ha!

Hello Mark,

Fabulous cleaners these im sure others can chip in with the history and dates I can never remember when they ran apart from the late 60s to mid 70's.

The colourscheme is called 'Mandarin Blue' which is my favourite Hoover colourscheme I think next to the later Wedgewood Green.

restoring one would be fun but im sure theres a few of us here that could give you a masterclass in doing it.

Dont worry about the paper bags they use. Generic or genuine work just fine and I've had great success of modifying 'synthetic filter type' bags onto these cleaners.
The generic ones are usually quite cheap and do much the same so dont feel you have to waste money if you dont want to.

Never had any issues with non Gen or generic belts either -others here have but then I rarely use ours as we have modern daily machines.

Once the bug gets you thats it! Vacs everywhere. 300+ and counting up LOL.

I really like the look of the blue ones. Didn't know it was called mandarin blue -- thanks. But once I start with those it wouldn't surprise me if I then end up buying one in a different colour as a restoration project. Once I have one that works properly I would love to try restoring another one and I would be able to look at the good one for reference. This forum will no doubt be very useful indeed!

I see you have a vintage Hotpoint washer and dryer. Very nice. I do have a bit of a thing for washing machines too! Although I am from the UK, I did briefly live in Phoenix, AZ. The first house had a Maytag front loader with gas dryer. I was excited to move to the 2nd house because it had a traditional American toploader for me to experiment with :-)

Wellspotted,

Me and the other half collect washers dryers dishwashers and the odd cooker lol.

The hotpoint was taken out of daily service a while back and replaced with a modern Bosch which I dont feel guilty about battering to an extent. And its much more reliable than vintage when you need work clothing washed weekly without fuss.

Blueq, where in Oxford are you from? I live in the Oxford area and we've got a junior like that if you'd like to see one working. It's a later one with brown trim rather than blue.

I did have a spare blue standard junior in bits in the garage but I think it has been thrown out now. I do still have a blue headlight unit though should you find a vacuum with a broken or missing one.

Yes I see what you mean, Turbomaster. Sometimes you just need things to work!

DeluxeWolf I'm in Kidlington. If I end up buying ones that require work, then I'll have to put this project on hold till September as I'll be too busy until then to be disassembling, rubbing away rust and repainting etc. I am looking forward to having a go and may well ask for your expert opinion. Could be very useful to compare it to another machine when I've taken it apart and can't figure out how to put it back together again!

Don't worry too much about reassembling them, it's pretty straightforward really. The only bit that can be a pain is two of the motor screws (you need a very long screwdriver)

I'd be happy to offer any help, advice or parts I have lying around and if you'd like to try out the one I have let me know and we can arrange something.
