Tacony Corporation announced today that they are making Maytag vacuum cleaners in the United States (in St. James, MO) - three totally unique models. These will be sold in Maytag and independent appliance stores. Can't wait to see the 'old time' Maytag name on a really good American-Made vacuum cleaner. Love the three models, they are all so cute.

Another product made in America is a win for me! I know this is "way out there'' but wouldn't it be nice if someday Tacony could buy Hoover and make them "HOOVER" again?!

The new Maytag vacuum cleaners are exactly the type of cleaners that Hoover "should" have been making for Maytag. It's interesting that Maytag had the opportunity to put their brand name on any vacuum from any manufacturer of vacuums in China. Yet, they selected Tacony to build vacuums bearing their name. The three new Maytag models are all new designs. They've been the hush-hush 'secret' at the factory during their pilot builds. Other than employees, I think the only people who saw the new designs were at the Vacuum Collectors Meeting last month at the factory. The new 8 pound upright was being durability tested at the hotel most of the guys stayed at. They actually saw it being used in their rooms. The new models are going into production on Monday for a fall launch. Much advertising will drive customers to see these new vacuums. They really are gorgeous in Maytag White with the Maytag nameplate on the front. Just beautiful vacuums.

And one more thing: we need to hire fifty more people and go to two shifts to keep up with the demand. Nothing like adding American jobs. They're already talking about expanding the factory again (fifth expansion since it was built in 1997).

I hope they are planning on a metal canister that is simple. no cord winders or anything. I love the simplistic on and off switch. with no other do dads.

Tacony isn't buying Royal. Royal isn't for sale. They are owned by the TTI, a Chinese company, that just bought Oreck and is rebranding the Hoover and Dirt Devils with the Oreck name on them.

The Maytag vacuums are rolling off the lines - I'll get some publicity pics as soon as I can from the marketing department.

They are really 'new' models, even the motors are different. We're getting over 1200 hours out of the clean air upright (with it's double fan, double ball bearing motor).

The new canister won't be launched until January. Of course it will have a cord rewinder on it, can you imagine the backlash of the general public if it didn't have one? It will be packed alone, the three attachments sets available will be straight suction, compact power nozzle, or full size power nozzle. So one vacuum will be able to be 'customized' to fit what ever the needs of the customer are, and it can be 'upgraded' if the customer moves from a home with hard floors to one with Frieze carpets simply by adding the full size power nozzle, electric wand, and electric hose at that later date.

The Maytag name

sleepdoc's profile picture
When I was a kid, Maytag still was a really prestigious name that was legitimately associated with quality and endurance. My great aunt had a very old Maytag wringer attached to a tank. She also had a newer white Maytag automatic washer that had light blue trim about the same color as the background on this page, IIRC, with a dial in the center of the panel and maybe a few buttons. These things lasted forever. In the 90s, my mom bought a new Maytag washer and dryer. They worked well but didn't last more than maybe 7 years and had to be replaced. The new Maytag washer didn't work as well when it was new and didn't last even that long. In the 2000s, Maytag came out with a frontloader washer (Neptune?) that was supposed to be miraculous but ended up being a disaster. In my adult life, I've never even considered buying something from Maytag. Maybe things are changing. If they are, it's the only example that occurs to me of an appliance company actually improving the quality of their machines after going downhill. Simplicity and Riccar made big gains when they moved their manufacturing to Missouri, but that was just an improvement, not a recovery. Hoover and Eureka (and Maytag) compromised so much on quality that they're disposable machines now. I'll be really excited to see the new Maytag vacuums and trust that Tacony is the right choice to restore Maytag's good reputation.

I agree with you about the cord winder. Just a fantasy with me. I remember as a kid my Mom had a vacuum and I remember "feeding" that cord back into the machine. jiggle side to side up and down,, then a foot of the cord sticks out. but I like to see a metal canister. with like a modern but timeless design. Simple powerful and quiet. but it is a wonderful thing that these will be made in USA no matter what the machine is made of. this gives me hope that maybe things will turn around.

Any updates on the Maytag Tacony models? Pictures maybe? I was in our local Maytag shop yesterday and they seemed to have some info on the different models but did not have photos yet either. Curiously, they said they were not excited to have vacuums back again as they did not see them selling well or being appreciated by the average big appliance customer. We shall see.

linkie no workie unless it is my connection. as far as what that Maytag guy said,, who cares what he thinks. Tacony the parent company I am sure knows what they are doing and I think America is in need of an old fashioned simple and long lasting design. I am not a vacuum collector like some of you, but I am getting to see why you all do this. I have my ten now eleven vacuums. I see Dysonman1 has 600 plus,, I don't think I will ever get to that point, but I would like a few metal cans and maybe a Kirby. I have too much room taken with console stereos I restore and build. (nothing like 400 watt huge console) But my point is that we are ready for a vacuum like my Grandma had ,the rainbow or the old fashioned Electrolux. I am learning about these vacs I like to old look, I pray that Tacony will come out with a tank vacuum like that royal I seen on here it was maroon and had the tools on like a "saddlebag" I want to see that comeback simple cord winder. My worthless opinion. but I can't wait to see the new Maytag I want pictures. "this thread is useless without pics" as they say on Audiokarma.

Well they HAD vacuums before...

Yes they had Hoovers, private labeled that were made in China and sold for more then their Hoover equivalents. That Hoover/Maytag canister had the worst hose I've ever seen on a vacuum. Of course the Windtunnel upright wasn't bad but yet again, it was just a Hoover with a Maytag badge on it. If you were to set a Riccar Maytag and a Maytag Windtunnel next to one another there is no comparison on which one is going to catch the consumers eye. Because I'm a Riccar dealer, and soon to be Maytag dealer, we've been sent a mailing and I've seen all 3 new Maytag units. They're gorgeous. They're finished in a awesome Diamond White Metallic paint, The uprights all have a "Visual Spine" on the front that makes them appear even stronger and bolder to the consumer. They just look like a true, high quality, vacuum. I'm sure Tom or I will post pictures as soon as we can because I know these products are going to be a huge sales hit.

Is Maytag trying to become the Miele of America?

Post# 246005 , Reply# 22   8/16/2013 at 15:54 (3,876 days old) by vackid (Pennsylvania)

As Tom stated earlier, There is no canister as of right now. The line is going to be 3 uprights. Good, Better Best.

The canister I was referring to was the old Hoover Duros canister with the hose that was about as flexible as uncooked pasta. It was a horrible length, maybe 5 1/2 feet and had an even worse handle grip. I wouldn't sell one to my worst enemy because it was truly one of the worst canisters I've ever had to even try and use.

John mentioned that Maytag did have a line of vacuums before and that line failed miserably. I was answering to WHY they failed miserably. Another thing to consider was the fact that Maytag vacuums were sold in Home Depot and a few independent appliance stores. These new Maytag units will NOT be in Home Depot (Makes it more valuable and perceived to be higher end and more prestigious) but will be sold through Appliance stores carrying Maytag, Maytag branded stores (Imagine the Apple Store for appliances) Reputable vacuum stores (I stress REPUTABLE, Not being sold out of someone's car or house) and there is a rumor about an infomercial. Maytag is also spending 35 million dollars a year on advertising these machines, so in short, these vacuums will most likely not be a repeat of Maytag's past experiments.

I would love them to use the cord winder that they use on the Henry vacuums. those are simple yet are as effective. How many vacuums have you ever seen where you have to "feed" the cord inside and a foot of the cord always hang out. I like some canisters that have the sheave that is on the rear where you can wind it on. There are so many long lasting ways to construct a vacuum. I hope the Maytag will really impress. I can't wait to see one.

M500 2 speed, 8 pound upright vacuum cleaner. Went into production this morning, 9/23/2013. This is the first one off the line, going into the Museum (kind of like the Hoover vaults - except the public can come play with our vacuums).

From what i was told each of the maytag vacuums are based off the lower end riccar/simplicity vacuums. there will be that 8 lb upright, which i see they moved the switch to the handle for. A bypass system similar to the vibrance/symmetry and then a tandem air system like the brilliance/synchrony. I have seen pictures of the other two i thought they were pretty boxy looking.

The new Maytag is based upon the F3600, just below the top of the line Simplicity model. This machine has a unique motor and fan, as well as fan case. The only thing that's the same as the Simplicity is the brush bar. Everything is different, even the soleplate. The bag door opens complete, and the disposable HEPA bag has a self closing plastic collar (think Miele). It's about half as loud as the Simplicity. That being said, the Simplicity/Riccar line is being revamped to take the new Maytag motor, fan, fan case, bag assembly, and soleplate. Plus two additional features not found on the Maytag. Simplicity/Riccar dealers will have a virtually identical product to sell, with two more features, in GORGEOUS new colors, at the same price as a Maytag. It's a win/win for the independent dealer. Maytag advertising dollars drives customers in a vac shop, where they are 'upsold' a Riccar/Simplicity - but for the same price they were already willing to spend upon the Maytag.

The Maytag will be available to purchase soon. They just went into production yesterday. There will be national advertising by Maytag, as well as an infomercial to drive people into stores. The idea is that both vac shops as well as Maytag stores will sell the cleaners. There are three models. One is the 8 pound. One is a two motor unit (tandem air). The third is a single motor, clean air upright. As soon as the machines are shipped to dealers from the warehouse, I'll let everyone know. I'm having a lot of fun using this one - it's quiet and very powerful.

This is a picture of the new disposable bag. It's self sealing and very easy to change.

I've never been as much of a fan of uprights as I am canisters with PN's.......I love the way the bag change looks "Idiot proof" on this. All the bagged uprights I've ever owned in the past, the bag changing was a complete guessing game because of the way you had to push it on and hope it stayed.....

Josh: the new canisters are wonderful. I'm sure they'll launch (become available) at the VDTA show, which is a great place to launch new technology. The new canisters are the same machine but in two different colors. One will come with straight suction tools (I think it's the green one) and one will come with an electric hose and electric wand. You'll buy a Compact or Full Size power nozzle to go with it. Like the way Miele does. It's an amazing vacuum. The best, FULL SIZE attachments available on vacuums that can be sold at vac shops. Brand new attachments, not before offered by Tacony. The straight suction rug tool is a combination of the Filter Queen model 500 rug nozzle, with an Apex Strato Cleaner rug nozzle but includes real edge to edge cleaning - this is for the straight suction cleaner. I'd say it almost cleans rugs as well as a power nozzle. The engineers really tested almost 100 different nozzles first, then made prototypes - and after two years, came up with something brand new but with the best parts of past rug tools. The new canister uses a copy of the Electrolux 1205's cord reel, which means it's reliable and repairable (easily). Plus it's quiet.
The prototype I use it butt ugly yellow, but that's the color that CAD designed rapid prototyping machines made. Production colors are mint green and electric blue for the power nozzle model. The new canister is replacing 4 canisters. It's very good. Many canister people will be buying the new canister. Available for sale about April, 2014

I am currently shipping Maytag Vacuums, and have them in stock. E-mail me for more info. Jeremy@Faribaultvacuum.com these new machines are powerful and easy to use. If you like a hose attachment the M1200 Mo2or is very versatile. If you don't need a hose attachment the M500 9 pound vacuum is amazing!

I love the Mo2oR. That's the one I told Rob M. to buy. This machine is one great piece of vacuum cleaning engineering that is going to become a classic. I have both models in the museum. The M500 ultralight model is extraordinary. The new soleplate can clean frieze carpets without dragging or snowplowing through the long strands. The edge cleaning is 40% better than the old design. I love the new bag system. For everyone who says "bags are better", these are just as good as Miele bags. But a lot less expensive. They seal themselves and have a plastic collar. The Tandem-Air Mo2oR M1200 is by far my favorite new upright.
