You know, I had not really appreciated what a beautiful machine the 800 was until I got this one. I've actually had it quite a while now but since I couldn't seem to find a handle, I didn't see any point in doing anything with it.

Well, a kind member of the club came to my rescue and now I have completed work on this splendid machine.

The approach I took is what in the pipe organ world would be called a "sensitive restoration" -- not necessarily 100% original or historically accurate, but the replaced parts are period-appropriate, more or less, and in fact not all Hoover. See who can spot one significant part of this machine that is not a Hoover item!

Here are a few photos - - -

(Note: If someone's reading this, please wait to respond until I post the last image -- so they'll all run together without interruption. The last one will be a two-part scan of the "Aromador" brochure. Thanks!)

Look how clean the bottom is -- this machine appears to have been used very little. Even the wheels are very clean and 'sharp' with a minimum of scratching.

12-blade fan -- what a powerhouse! Other Hoovers with 12-blade fans were the 150, 900 and 925. Maybe some others as well?

The Aromador -- this one smells very faintly of roses!

WOW! :D

I'm very envious of that one, it looks great! I agree, having seen the two different bags on it, the orange suits it much better - just a pity about the bag-spreader. Maybe you could remove the bag-spreader and slide the later-style bag slide over the top - maybe push something up inside the bag so the slide has something to 'grip'? Or maybe that's going too far! It certainly looks amazing, anyway.

I would suggest - again, if you don't think it's going too far - repainting the motor cap decoration; it's easily done with some masking tape and black paint, and it really brings out the definition (see pic!). I need to do this with my 450 and 925.

Another interesting thing about the orange badge is the way the upper side of it is not curved, but straight....strange!

The non-genuine part I would guess is the handle?

Thanks also for posting the 'Sentinal Series' leaflet, I LOVE seeing things like that. I have a few vintage leaflets like that I got from eBay for the 425/750/900 and Special series, but perhaps you already have these? If not, I'd be happy to send you some scans?

To sum up, congratulations on such a great machine!

Congratulations Charles on another tantalising restoration, its always a pleasure to read your"Behind The Scenes" stories , all adds to the magic & excitement of our renovations & hobby... Its always nice to be able to restore "As Was" but its the enthusiasm and doing it that wins the day for me personally!!!!

I love the orange accent colours, it works beautifully for me, I guess the Handgrip is the Add-On??, can you re-fill the aromador when empty??

Enjoy your restoration, Mike

p.s. I personally wouldnt try the paint, I think it makes the top look flat...AND, you can get the accent effect more naturally by using metal polish and leaving a little around the lines, The Art Deco effect is to see the subtle beauty of the ridges as they catch different shades of light etc...

I only suggest the paint as it was an original feature of the styling, as dictated by Dreyfuss himself! I didn't just start painting bits in a deluded attempt to enhance the appearance!

Very nice, first I've heard of the aromador, never knew.
And as always it's nice to see that I'm not the only person living in a jumble LOL

So the lines on the motor cap were actually originally painted then? The only other 800 that I've seen is Stan Kann's, and I don't remember whether or not it has painted lines. It's been a long time since I've seen it.

I guess, then, at some point, mine was rebuilt and the paint buffed off? I'll think about trying it but would hate to make a mess of it, but we'll see.

btw just talked to Stan - he said his 800 has the same badge as the 700, 725 adnd 750 so I guess there are a few out there like that. He did confirm that the lines in the cap should be black so I guess I'll see what I can come up with.

I have to say Charles, you've done a beautiful job refurbishing this machine. I like the choice of bag you finally decided upon. Should you decide to paint the lines on the motor cap, I'm sure you will do an excellent job. Worst case scenario, if you make a mistake, you can always buff the paint off the cap.

The lines, the lines...

Okay, so I tried my hand at painting the lines. But rather than paint and masking tape, which would be hard to get around the smooth ends, I got the brilliant idea of trying a Sharpie! Think it worked okay?!

And MORE on the AromaDOR!

Here are some photos showing the Aromador and how it works.

(Sorry about the blurry photos btw - it was hard to take these photos because I only had one hand free, and was too lazy to go get the tripod.)

After you remove the bottom plate from the machine, you depress the little button just by my finger to release the glass vial inside.

Post# 23153 , Reply# 28   10/27/2007 at 15:52 (5,997 days old) by charles~richard ()

The vial coming out.

btw, by turning the tip at the other end, you can "turn on" or "turn off" the aroma.

These came in a variety of scents, but I don't know what they all were. In the 925 I used to have, the cotton wadding inside was pale green and it smelled faintly of evergreen. This one, as I said, has a slight scent of roses.

Post# 23155 , Reply# 30   10/27/2007 at 15:55 (5,997 days old) by charles~richard ()

The stuff inside is not wick material (like the Air-Wick room deoderizers) -- it looks more like really dense cotton wadding. Kinda like the stuff a tampon is made of.

That is quite interesting. I wonder if you put a few drops of pure alcohol on the dried up stuff inside if it would restore some of the smell, or try a few drops of water first? You know how they loved alcohol in everything back then

btw the sharpied black lines do enhance it I think.

Is there a readable list of contents on the bottle? Or maybe you could drop some dollar store cologne in it?

Charlie...

I did not even notice that the lines were missing! They were originally painted black and yes they are VERY easy to buff off of the machine. My 800 has the black badge. Even the orange badge on my 750 is different than the orange badge on my 700. The newer badges are "arched" and smooth where as the 700 orange badge is flat with the letters raised. I am not sure if this is clear in the photo. I still think that since yours is a higher serial number and later in the run that the badge was replaced after the machine was "buffed". I have never seen an orange badged 800. I have seen the red badged 800's though! That is another story!

Very nice, Charles!! I really love those older Hoovers...they just speak to me differently than the newer Convertibles, ESPECIALLY the plastic ones. Nice idea with the Sharpie!

BTW: What is that wooden box with 3 tubes sticking out of it? Reminds me of a Nixie Tube clock, but I guess it'd have to have at least another tube added to it. I guess it is some kind of amplifier? Just curious... :-)
