I recently indulged in some nostalgia from my childhood and purchased an Electrolux Model XXX from a person on Craigslist. It looks to be a pre-1948 model, at least according to a site I looked at, because it doesn't have the "saloon door" exhaust grille. It's got all its attachments except the canister for the sprayer.

I plugged it in and it really doesn't sound healthy. Certainly not like I remember my grandmother's XXX sounding. I'm thinking I'll have to completely clean it up, and see if the motor is shot. I'm worried that there's a bearing issue.

Is there any sort of step-by-step tutorial for messing with the electric motors on these vacuums?

Thanks in advance, and I'll post up a picture or two when I can.

Joe

Bearing issue

If bearings are required, there are two One goes is a 37mm and the other is 39 mm.Carbon brushes are extremely hard to find. Watch for metal fatigue on the fans.

I had it apart yesterday, or at least I tried to take it apart. I couldn't get the motor assembly out for anything.

I removed the back cover, disconnected the power switch, and removed 5/16" nuts but couldn't get it to move....I had to give up for the night.

Anyone have any idea about how to get the motor assembly to come out?
